The material is incredibly nice to the touch. It has a great color, which will suit any wallpapers. I liked the design. We’ve been using it for 2 months and it still looks like brand new. This price is appropriate since the product is very well built. It is inconvenient to use due to the size. I am going to get something different next time.

Carabiners Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy carabiners, right? No!

Cross-loaded

Carabiners are meant to be loaded along their longitudes/lengths. When they are loaded latitudinally, from gate to spine, that is what is referred to as “cross loading” and it is a potentially dangerous situation. Carabiners are roughly three to four times weaker in a cross-loaded configuration, and precautions should be taken to avoid it.

Nose-hooked

This is a super-dangerous situation in which a carabiner accidentally becomes hung on a bolt or even a sling only by its nose. More dangerous than cross-loading, a nose-hooked carabiner can actually break. It’s a relatively rare occurrence, but it’s been known to happen.

Materials

There are essentially two styles of carabiner: steel and aluminum. Steel carabiners are extremely durable and relatively heavy. Aluminum carabiners are extremely lightweight and durable enough for years of use, but will wear out much more quickly than steel. Steel carabiners are reserved for high-use situations such as quickdraws and anchors in a gym, or “perma-draws” at certain crags where that’s allowed. Aluminum carabiners should never be fixed on routes, whether on draws or at lower-off anchors.

Oval Shape

The original shape of carabiner, ovals are still being produced by various companies. Their one and only benefit—aside from being cheaper—is the rather dubious claim to being able to rack more gear than other shapes of carabiners. Otherwise, they are weaker, heavier and harder to use.

Asymmetrical D-Shape

Now we’re talking! The offset D, or asymmetrical D-shaped carabiner is the most popular design because it is the lightest shape, strongest design and has a much larger gate opening than regular Ds, which improves functionality in everything from clipping to racking. These carabiners should comprise 99% of your rack.

Wire Gate

This type of gate is just a loop of bent wire that snaps shut under its own coiled tension. Wire gates look less strong than solid gates, but they often aren’t (in fact, some are now stronger). Because wires have less mass than solid gates, they are less likely to open under their own inertia. Typically, wire gates are lighter than solid gates. Whether or not they are easier to clip involves too many factors to generalize.

Straight Gate

Like its name says, a gate that’s straight. These carabiners are typically found on the bolt-end side of quickdraws, but that isn’t their only purpose. Straight gates are multi-purpose, all-around carabiners that can be great for racking cams and nuts, too.

Gate Closure

The way the gate attaches to the carabiners nose is super-important, not just in terms of strength but in terms of application and function in the vertical world. Typically, most carabiners contain a notch in the nose that hooks onto a tiny bar at the head of the gate. This is what keeps the carabiner closed under force. However, that notch can be problematic only in that it is prone to catching on things, from a rack of nuts to, worst case, the hanger of a bolt (thereby nose-hooking the carabiner).

This problem was solved with the invention of the “keylock” closure system, first introduced by the Petzl Spirit and now found on many other brands and models. A keylock is where the gate inserts like a jigsaw piece into the nose of the carabiner. The benefit to this design didn’t just make the Petzl Spirit suited to racking a set of nuts, but it also prevented nose-hooking on bolt hangers.

Keylock designs used to be only found on solid-gate carabiners. But today, there are a few wire-gate carabiners that have employed inventive solutions to create keylock-style functionality but with a wire gate. Check out the Black Diamond HoodWire or the Petzl Ange L.

What you need to know: keylock carabiners are the best carabiners for racking gear, especially nuts, and are less likely to be nose-hooked on bolt hangers or slings.

Size and Weight

Carabiners today come in a variety of sizes and weights. After choosing the style of gate, size and weight are the second and third most important considerations when choosing carabiners.

Weight matters for obvious reasons in a sport where you’re constantly fighting gravity for every upward inch. Though all carabiners are generally quite light, add up the weight of 50 of them for a big-wall rack, and a few grams here and there begin to add up. Even on a long 50-meter sport-climbing onsight attempt, you will feel a huge difference between 30 heavy quickdraws, and 30 super-light ones.

Size matters not only because it affects weight, but also function: smaller carabiners will generally be harder to clip. They will also hold fewer pieces of gear and fewer knots.

In the last years, manufacturers raced to create the first sub-one-ounce carabiner, and a number of companies reached that goal, largely by making the carabiner physically smaller. Today there are a few full-size carabiners right around that magical weight of one ounce such as the CAMP Photon Wire and the Black Diamond Oz.

In general, your best bet is to get out there and try your hand at all the different options available. See if you prefer to clip wire gates over bent solid gates. Do small carabiners work for you, or do you think they’re too small? Above all, next time you find yourself mindlessly racking gear or clipping draws to bolts on your warm-up, take a moment to stop and appreciate your carabiners. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do.

Now it should be quick

Carabiners are the unsung heroes of climbing. They get beaten to a pulp and still save thousands of lives each and every day without receiving the slightest bit of gratitude or appreciation for their wonderful form and function. Contrary to popular belief, a carabiner is not just there for you to clip your water bottle to the outside of your pack, your keys to your belt loop or your dog’s leash to its collar. Carabiners have a higher purpose! They literally allow climbers to do everything from clipping their ropes into protection, to racking gear, to holding falls. They keep us safe and allow us to move efficiently in the vertical world of climbing.

Gate opening

This is the largest possible distance from the gate to the nose when open. It is helpful to know how easy a carabiner is to clip with a rope or how much gear can be racked on the carabiner. This is particularly important for climbers with big hands or for ice climbers who wear gloves.

Cross-loading

Carabiners are designed to be loaded along the major axis (longitudes), for this is the strongest orientation. However, it is possible for a carabiner to be loaded latitudinally from the gate to the spine, which is referred to as cross-loading. This doesn’t have to be a bad thing, but the carabiner loses quite a bit of its strength, dropping from 20 kN down to kN. So, you should always be careful and try to avoid it.

Gate-open strength

This refers to the strength of a carabiner when open. It can come to an open gate if the carabiner wasn’t closed properly and is nose-hooked or if a rock pushes on the gate in the direction of opening. Even though this rarely occurs, it does indeed occur and is always bad since a carabiner with an open gate only has a strength of kN and can break much more easily.

The Nose

The area where the gate and the basket meet and the carabiner closes is very important not only in terms of strength but also in terms of function and application. Many carabiners have a notch in the nose that hooks onto a bar at the top of the gate. This bar gives the carabiners its strength along the major axis.

On the left the Key lock; on the right a gate with a nose

However, the notch can be problematic. It is prone to catching on things like gear loops or (even worse) a bolt hanger, which is known as a nose hook.

To solve this problem, the keylock closure system was invented. This is where the gate inserts into the nose of the carabiner like a jigsaw piece. This design used to be available only on solid-gate carabiners, but a few companies have developed similar systems for wire-gate carabiners, such as Black Diamond Hood Wire or the Petzl Ange Finesse.

What to look for

If you are only going to abseil you may choose a static rope which will not stretch at all and gives you less bounce as you descend, but at some point most abseilers will also climb so for the added comfort and versatility it is a good idea to get a dynamic rope.

Rope Hammocks

Just like their name suggests, these are crafted from cotton or synthetic ropes. Those made with cotton tend to be softer and are not itchy to the skin like synthetic ones. Further, cotton hammocks provide additional comfort, require little maintenance and are easy to clean.

Intended particularly for outdoor usage by campers and travelers, these are known for being durable even in the harshest of conditions including rain and snow. They are usually lightweight and with smaller foam factor for easy packing on the go.

These are hammocks made from comfortable fabric including cotton or nylon. These can be made in a variety of colors or designs. Hammocks of this nature are ideal for relaxation and affordable for everyone. They usually come with different price tags.

For added convenience, these do not take up much space. You do not need poles or trees to set your hammock up. And you can get one in a variety of styles. Options include snug fit chairs and well-defined designs with added padding.

No compromise on size

If you need a hammock with enough room, look no further. This hammock is feet long, feet wide and one solid piece. It comes in single size holding 400 pounds and double size which can accommodate 600 pounds. You will not get much comfort anywhere else. However, do not let the size of this product fool you, it weighs only 2ounces! Ideal for two people hanging out. You can either lie down or sit side by side to enjoy the comfort of this hammock.

Extra perks

Every hammock comes with Hammock Tree safe straps to help you set up quick and easy. You also get carabiners all included in a stuff sack. This hammock further comes with all the camping equipment you need to set it up. There’s even an extra rope to help you hook up your hammock in case the trees are further apart.

Easy set up and take down

Hanging up this hammock is super easy. You will get plenty of slack both in the cord containing the carabiner and the straps. You will not get fussy in any way when selecting your trees. Even if you have never used a hammock before, this one is a piece of cake. The setup is obvious and straightforward that you will get done in less than minutes. There is no need to use a user manual. Take down is easy as well, only takes minutes. The thin fabric of this hammock can easily get rolled into a ball, and you will get no struggle re-packaging it.

Expect a few surprises

You will be surprised when you receive this hammock. It comes in an extremely small package, a bit bigger than you hand. But you will be amazed at its functionality. Though the fabric is extremely thin, it can bear 660 pounds without tearing! The stuff bag that comes with this hammock turns into a side pocket where you can keep your keys, bottle, mobile phone or glass. It also comes with its own mosquito net. This keeps you free from bugs and mosquitoes.

Comes in a complete pack

You will love the Neolite since it comes with everything ready to use, a plus for this product since others in the market charge you extra when you purchase components. The Neolite comes with straps, carabiners and ropes in an integrated stuff sack. This will ease set up and give you ample time to enjoy your camping experience.

Basic Aid Gear

Two basic principles of good aid gear: • Use the lightest and simplest gear. I use the lightest gear possible as long as it does not compromise safety or functionality. Aid racks are heavy. If you compare the difference between a standard rack and a rack that uses lightweight biners and slings, the difference can be more than five pounds. Psychologically, I feel much better standing on marginal aid placements with a lighter rack. And when it comes time to free climb the Stovelegs and Pancake Flake on The Nose—5.can feel like 5.1if you have a really heavy rack.

My exceptions to using the lightest gear possible: ropes, cams, Aiders, and harness. I will describe why later.

Warning: While I encourage using whatever you can latch onto at first, never use worn out gear, especially such critical equipment as a harness, daisy chain or rope. Todd Skinner’s death on the Leaning Tower reminded us all of how important it is to check your harness carefully and retire it if there is any question about its safety.

This is an short excerpt from our Aider Buying Advice article at OutdoorGearLab. Check out the complete Big Wall Aider Review to see how various aiders compare to each other.

STANDARD AIDERS AKA ETRIERS

Examples:  Fish Smart Aider — I used these for my first dozen or so walls. Great solid aider and much cheaper than the others.  Metolius Step Aider — I used these for a lot of big wall ascents. The vinyl-reinforced steps definitely make them more comfortable and keep the steps open and easy to slide your foot into. The sub-steps on the second and top step are awesome for top-stepping.

LIGHTWEIGHT AIDERS AKA ALPINE AIDERS

These are best for mostly free routes where you occasionally need to use Aiders. Very light weight but uncomfortable if you are standing for more than a few minutes. Bad choice for learning to aid climb.  Petzl GradiStep Etrier — These are great super-lightweight Aiders because they fold up in their own bag. Great for mostly free routes with just a few sections of aid, like the Northwest Face of Half Dome. I have used them on one-day Nose ascents but would probably use something a little beefier on my next one-day ascent. Great on alpine climbs where there might be just a little aid.

OTHER AIDERS  Metolius Easy Aider — Not great for leading. Good for following until you have to clean a horizontal traverse. If you bring them for following, it means you will probably end up managing multiple sets of Aiders. That goes against what I believe is the key to having fun and succeeding at walls: keeping the systems as simple as possible.

Ascenders

The only widely available models are the Black Diamond Index Ascender and the Petzl Ascension Ascender. I have used the old Petzl Ascender a lot and like it a lot. The movement up the rope is not as smooth as the original Jumar but it is light and overall it works great. There is now a new version of this Ascender that has a different teeth design that Petzl says is easier on the rope. Black Diamond replaced their nForce ascender with the Index. I was not a fan of the nForce. The Index looks like a big improvement and similar to the Petzl.

Belay Device

An autolocking belay device like the Petzl GriGri or Trango Cinch is mandatory on a wall. There are times when you need to take your brake hand off the device to clear a rope snag or dig into the haul bag. Also, it is often hard to stay perfectly alert during a multi-hour belay. I have used the GriGri a lot and love it, especially because it is also a great belay device at the crags as well. However, I prefer the Cinch on big walls for one reason: it automatically slides up the rope when you are jugging up whereas the GriGri does not unless there is a ton of weight on the rope and everything is aligned just right. This means that between backup knots, you have a nice extra backup with the Cinch.

Read my complete Best Belay Device Review to see how the top belay devices compare. Also, check out our article How To Choose a Belay Device

Big Wall Harness

Get a harness with decent padding that is well padded at the waist and leg loops. Because I don’t like heavy gear, I don’t wear the super-beefy wall harnesses like the Yates Shield Harness but a lot of people love ‘em. Make sure there are two beefy gear loops on each side. Before you commit to a beefy harness for a mostly-free route like The Nose, make sure you are willing to sacrifice the extra weight for comfort.

Most of the time, especially on a one-day ascent, I just wear a trad climbing harness because they are light. My favorites right now are the Black Diamond Momentum or the Petzl Sama Harness.

We have a complete big wall harness review and an article How To Choose A Big Wall Harness.

Wall Shoes

Walking up and down in Aiders maybe the single most destructive activity to a pair of shoes. “What shoes to bring on a wall?” is still a question I grapple with on every climb. I have listed all the different types of footwear with their pros and cons below. I usually use climbing approach shoes but at the peak of my wall climbing activity I would buy a cheap pair of hiking boots and cover the seams in Shoe Goo or Seam Grip. Even if you buy a pair of climbing-specific approach shoes, it may still make sense to cover them in Seam Grip. Some climbers go as far as putting two tubes on each shoe! This will likely result in the fabric blowing out long before the stitching does… which is what you want to happen.

As for shoe fit, I err on the side of wearing my wall shoes a little tight. That way they perform better when doing free moves. But bear in mind that tight shoes will hurt a little more on the descent. • Generally pretty expensive. • Can be clunky when you move around in Aiders. • Bad for smearing.

The Origin of Hammocks

Hammocks can easily be passed off as something of a novelty, but nothing could be further from the truth. Hammocks actually have a history that dates back thousands of years ago, so their practicality shouldn’t be overlooked, nor should their benefits.

Hammocks were used by Mayan Indians in Central America, albeit in a primitive form. They were often created using bark or plant fibres. It is believed the word ‘hammock’ serviced from a Haitian word to describe fishnets, which can be atributed to their original appearance.

Like many good ideas, it wasn’t long before the hammock was embraced by several different areas and cultures, and soon hammocks were seen throughout South America, Central America and Mexico.

Of course, many of us would be quick to dismiss a hammock, because we have the comfort of our beds, but you shouldn’t case aside the humble hammock so quickly. There is an assumption made that due to the basic design of a hammock, then there is no way it can contend with the number of luxurious beds available. However, the fact remains that more and more people are adopting hammocks for their sleeping requirements, and are feeling the benefits of doing so.

Spreader Bar Hammocks

As the name suggests, spreader bar hammocks have wooden or metal bars at each end of the hammock, which makes the material taut. They are often seen next to pools and are also popular in many back gardens due to how easy they are to relax on. Spreader bar hammocks are often supported by stands.

The Lounging Hammock Chair

The design of a lounging hammock itself is slightly more upright than that of a sleeping hammock, and are often characterised by the wooden spreaders the hammock is suspended by.

A hammock chair is often more cradle-like, and can be suspended from a beam, or attached to a stand.
