All-in-one

An all-in-one is basically a large monitor with the actual computer built into the back or base. They typically use the same components you’d find in a laptop and, as such, don’t have the performance capabilities and/or the expansion opportunities of a tower.

Because they’re all one piece, setup usually requires little more than plugging it in and connecting a keyboard and mouse. The minimal setup keeps your desk clutter-free and makes them much easier to move from room to room compared to a tower. However, should something go wrong with the display, you lose your entire computer.

Mini and stick PCs

Like all-in-ones, mini PCs use mobile components to keep them small. So small actually that you can hide one behind a monitor or tuck one into an entertainment center to use as a media server connected to a TV. Stick PCs take this a step further, shrinking an entire computer into something that’s just larger than old-school thumb drive. There’s an HDMI video output at one end letting you plug it directly into a monitor or TV.

While you can find some small powerful desktops, mini PCs are typically mainstream systems made for day-to-day tasks, web surfing and media consumption. You’ll find plenty of ports to connect peripherals to, but internal expansion is minimal if available at all. Stick PCs are even less powerful, but still fine for email, social media and movies.

One advantage they both share is portability. You could, for example, pack a stick PC to take with you on vacation without a second thought. Or you could have an office setup built around a mini PC that you could simply disconnect and move to your living room for a home theater experience.

The Asus Chromebit is a stick PC running on Google’s Chrome OS.

Staplers and Removers

Staplers are one of the best known and widely used pieces of office equipment. They are used to securely join together paper by driving a thin metal through the sheets and then folding the staples ends. Staplers come in two primary forms, manual and electric. Manual staplers are normally hand held although heavy duty manual staplers that sit on a desktop are also common. Electric staplers are used when large volumes or stapling is required and some are capable of joining 80 sheets of paper at a time.

Mini Staplers

For a portable stapling solution look no further than a mini stapler. Designed for light duty use, these staplers will fit easily into a briefcase, bag or pocket so you can keep documents in order while out of the office. You can staple between to 20 sheets of printer paper together quickly and easily.

Vertical Staplers

If you’re looking for something a little different try a vertical stapler. These staplers usually sit in a stand and allow you to grip the stapler like a handle and punch staples whilst holding the paper up. Sat next to the office printer, a vertical stapler can be ideal for busy office environments.

Long Arm Staplers

For stapling larger documents, project folders, magazines or scrapbooks we recommend using a long arm stapler. Also known as long reach staplers, you’ll be able to staple sheets of paper further from the edge than is possible with standard desktop documents – usually up to 32cm.

Electric Staplers

Electric staplers use automated stapling mechanisms that will staple materials without the need to apply force manually. They are ideal for offices with high volume stapling requirements because they can staple large quantities of material quickly and with minimum effort. Basic versions can staple up to 30 sheets of printer paper while heavy duty ones have a capacity of up to 100 sheets. Some electric staplers also have the ability to staple in multiple ways – side, corner and saddle stapling.

Stapling Pliers

Stapling pliers are ideal for moderate to heavy duty continuous usage. Perfect for office mailrooms, they use handheld operating mechanisms to give a more secure fastening action and are ideal for securing padded envelopes and packages. Stapling pliers can also staple cartons and large reports.

Staple Guns

Staple guns or tackers are handheld staplers that are designed for tacking fabric, posters and canvas to baseboards or display boards. They can also be used to tack leather and in some instances carpet. Featuring a spring loaded mechanism to provide the necessary force needed to drive the staples into board, staple guns can be operated with a single hand so are easy to use.

How Much The Stapler Can Take

For office use, the first and most important factor is the capacity of the stapler at one time. If you are working with files or reports, you may find yourself in a situation where you have to attach rather large, 30-40 pages long documents together. It is vital that your stapler is capable of holding these together and will not let go or will not jam, otherwise you might lose pages or get them mixed up with other documents.

What Exactly Do You Need To Staple

It is also good to keep in mind what the exact purpose that you are buying the stapler for is. Different products are made for different things, and some staplers may have really good customer reviews but could leave you disappointed because they were not designed for the job that you intended to use them for.

Staplers are not only used in offices. If you own a restaurant, a package delivery service, or any business that uses flyers, vouchers or any sort of wrapping, you will need to find the best stapler for each one of these tasks.

Generally if you staple something other than sheets of regular printing paper, it is a good idea to use staplers that are designed to resemble a pair of scissors, meaning that you have to clench them in your fist to staple instead of the ones you have to use on a flat surface to save time and energy. However, for office use, you do not necessarily need the most specially designed and strongest stapler as it might be too expensive and redundant compared to how difficult operations you have to perform with it.

Processor

The processor is the heart of the computer and has a large impact on how fast it runs.  You might well find many with an Intel Celeron or similar and these are to be avoided unless you will be simply browsing the web and sending emails.

Look for either an Intel Core processor or AMD A-series if you can – and some of the laptops in this chart do offer these. The most powerful and efficient chips are currently Intel generations codenamed Broadwell (5th) and Skylake (6th) and can be found in some budget laptops. You won’t see the latest Kaby Lake (7th gen) for a while yet in cheap models.

Tips for choosing your 3D printer

Before starting, it’s important to know what features and properties are most important for your making needs. A schoolteacher wanting to introduce their classroom to the principles of STEM will probably prioritize safety, plug’n’play, and low-cost, whereas a mechanical engineer needing custom 3D printed prototypes will look for higher resolution, speed, and even multi-material capabilities.

3D Printer Technology: The majority of consumer 3D printers can be divided into two main categories: FDM (fused deposition modeling, also known as FFF) technology, and SLA (sterelithography). With FDM, plastic filament is heated and passed through an extruder, which deposits it layer by layer into a 3D shape that hardens as it cools. FDM technology is generally quite affordable, and allows for a range of materials (we’ll talk more about that later).

SLA 3D printing involves focusing a light source (UV lamp or laser) into a vat of photopolymer resin. The light hardens the resin into precise, predetermined patterns, building up the 3D object. Though not as common as FDM (due mainly to its higher cost, maintenance and post-processing needs), SLA has the advantage of creating much more precise and professionally finished 3D printed objects, and is therefore becoming more sought after for prototyping and end-use needs. In our 2013D Printer Buyer’s Guide, the SLA 3D printers are in a separate category at the end.

Build Volume: Most desktop 3D printers are quite limited in their size, but for household projects, this usually isn’t a problem. Some models, such as the Rostock MAX, are prized for their larger build volume. Keep in mind, however, that it is also quite common to 3D print multiple small parts of a design and assemble or glue them together afterwards.

3D Printing Materials: FMD 3D printers most commonly use PLA or ABS filaments. PLA is biodegradable and generally quite affordable, but it can be brittle and break easily. On the flipside, ABS is more flexible, yet requires a heated bed to print. Other FDM-friendly materials include nylon, bronze and copper composites, wood-based filaments, and more, most of which are available in a wide variety of colors. Keep in mind that some 3D printer companies require users to buy their proprietary filaments, which can drive up costs.

For SLA resins, color choices are more limited, and they can be more expensive, but for some designers, the smoother, higher-resolution finish is worth it.

Speed and Resolution: Consumer 3D printers are notorious for being slow. The majority range from around 50-100mm/s, but as the technology advances, so too will the speed. At the same time, many 3D printers are capable of achieving quite high resolutions, from 200 down to as little as 20 (keep in mind that the lower the actual number, the higher and better the resolution will be). Some 3D printer models give users the option of increasing the speed by producing thicker layers, thereby reducing the resolution. The acceptable trade-off between speed and resolution will entirely depend on your needs as a maker, so keep that in mind when choosing your 3D printer.

Others: Multiple extruders, heated beds, closed frames, USB or WiFi, DIY Kits…There is so much more to take into consideration before you buy a 3D printer. Do you want to print in multiple colors or materials? Then you’ll need a dual-extruder model. 3D printing with ABS or other specialty materials often requires a heated and/or enclosed print bed, both for consistency and safety. For classrooms or shared workspaces, WiFi connectivity can be considered a bonus, but USB remains the standard. And then there are the questions of software (open source or proprietary?), add-ons, and the option of buying a DIY Kit so you can build and customize the 3D printer yourself.

From a mono laser to a high-end multifunction printer

When you’re looking for the best business printer for your company’s needs, it can be tricky to know where to start. There are so many different business printers on the market, and so many different types, that finding the best business printer can be a daunting and confusing task.

The good news is that we’re here to make it as easy as possible, which is why we’ve put together this list of the best business printers – which covers both inkjet and laser devices. We also use our very own price comparison tool to make sure you get the very best deals on your chosen business printer.

So, how do you begin searching for the best business printer for your needs? First of all, you should make sure you know what you need out of a business printer, you can begin narrowing down the choices available, making it easier to find a business printer that suits you and your office’s needs. That means you won’t spend money on features you won’t use, while also making sure you have a printer that is capable of meeting all of your demands.

The choice can be doubly tough when you realise why there is so much competition, and that the real money is made on the many consumables your business will be purchasing to maintain that new printer purchase. What might initially seem like modest costs can soon add up over time.

Here, we will list the best business printers on the market today, and afterwards explain the best ways to find and buy the business printer that suits your needs.

Check out our list of best laser and inkjet printers for all audiences

So where do you need to start? Even the most modest office will likely be networked, and sharing a resource as useful as a printer is an essential. So you should only be looking at printers that are capable of networked use. Wired offers speed and robust function for a fixed office. Wireless is flexible, cheap to deploy but not as fast in use.

Here are the best printers for businesses – as chosen by the Techradar Pro team – large and small, from a basic monochrome lasers suitable for a small business and a home office through to a small departmental multifunction printer.

A touch noisy

The notion of the large, expensive laser printer should have long been dispelled and if nothing else can do that then the Ricoh SP-213w will. This small-footprint mono printer costs less than many inkjets but has the capability to provide basic wireless-based print services to a home office or smaller office. With a monthly duty cycle of 20,000 pages per month, a 1200 x 600dpi print resolution and a print speed of up to 2pages per minute, its small size shouldn’t hide the fact that this could be a little workhorse. Beyond these basics, the Ricoh SP-213w offers manual duplex, a Print and Scan mobile app, support for PCL and a two-year pan-European warranty.

Mono only

If you want an affordable printer for your business that excels in black and white print quality – and is a speedy performer to boot – then you really can’t go wrong with the Samsung Xpress M2835DW. Its small and compact body contains a huge host of features, and its easy to use and understand buttons makes quickly firing off prints a piece of cake.

It supports both wired and Wi-Fi connectivity, runs quietly and can even be controlled via smartphone. Its Eco mode allows you to control the amount of power and ink it consumes while printing, and overall this is an absolutely fantastic business printer.

Low print resolution

There was a time, not so long ago, when colour laser printing was exorbitant. That has fortunately changed with the likes of the Ricoh SPC-240DN doing their best to bring prices down. This is a massive printer at nearly 24kg so you will need to have a strong back and enough desk space to take it on board. Its starter toner kit will produce around 1000 pages and probably better than inkjet ones which dry out with time. It can print up to 1pages per minute (colour or mono) and has a duty cycle of 30,000 pages per month. It offers both Ethernet and USB ports and, with a 250-page input paper tray, has enough to make a small office pleased. However, at 600 x 600dpi, its print resolution may leave some wanting for more.

Not the quietest machine at times

Ricoh makes it four in our shortlist with the SG-2100N, a bargain basement printer that brings together the best of inkjet and laser technology. It delivers the sort of performance usually associated with devices costing three times its price. A water insoluble, viscous ink combined with a higher-than-average print resolution and a print speed – 29ppm – that surpasses anything at this price range (albeit in draft) make this Ricoh printer one of the best on the market for very small offices. Other features worth noting are manual duplex capabilities, a two-year onsite warranty (parts and labour), a well thought out design, affordable consumables, an Ethernet port and a generous input paper tray.

Not much of a looker

This is a heavyweight colour laser multifunction device intended for small business or workgroup use. Its slabby black and white design is functional and includes a large touchscreen for control, though the printer is only rated up to a recommended 3,000 pages per month. The MFC-L8650CDW includes a 50-sheet automatic document feeder which handles duplex scans and the printer offers duplex copying and printing as well; a welcome surprise! It’s rated at 28ppm for both black and colour prints dropping to about seven sheets when printing in duplex. It can handle input from USB, Ethernet or via wireless hook-up, with support for iOS and Android mobiles. A USB port offers scanning to and printing from USB drives.

Reconditioning a PC

If you return a car or PC within a month of purchase, it would likely be difficult to find out what’s gone on with either. Thankfully, the PC is a lot easier to get back to a state of ‘almost-new.’ After all, who knows what’s gone on physically and where it’s gone on the Internet?

Vendors will put it through tests to make sure that whatever the returnee didn’t like is the only problem, and then they’ll do what they must to fix the system. Hard drives are wiped clean and the operating system is freshly installed. If it’s a desktop, it’ll probably get a new mouse and a keyboard. Then the system gets tested and verified again, just like it did before it went out in the first place. It goes into a fresh box and is put out for sale. Legally, it can’t be called brand-new, and that means it typically sells at a lower price, even though, for all intents and purposes, it is new. Some refurbished PCs are actually new because they never came out of the box (maybe the order was cancelled, for example). Such “open box” deals may be the best deals you’ll find.

We suggest getting a refurb directly from the manufacturer, if you can. That way, the components replaced during reconditioning should be the same. A third-party refurbisher may use something different. In the end, go with someone you trust. Make sure you triple-check the return policy either way, so you don’t get stuck with someone else’s lemon just because you had some blind faith.

Electric or Manual

Electric staplers are straightforward to use. Most importantly, they can handle over 80 sheets of paper.

The good thing now is you can buy a smaller electric stapler which is perfect for individual use. It is a space-saver, thus it is advisable for busy people with abundant things on the desk.

Meanwhile, most manual staplers are now designed such that they are easy to grip. They are also very portable and lightweight. They are therefore perfect for on-the-go people who want to bring along with them anywhere their favorite or most-needed office supplies.

Note that heavy-duty staplers can be in electrical or manual form. Both have similar binding power, but the electric one is obviously a lot quicker.

Wirecutter Staff

Your home office should be a place where you feel comfortable doing your best work day after day. A team of work-from-home veterans spent more than 150 hours researching and testing equipment for a variety of workspaces and picked out a selection of great gear, including things that many of us use daily in our own home offices.

Our pick

Brighton Professional Black Wire Mesh Square Wastebasket

Modern and lean container stands up straight, lets your trash breathe, and works with or without a bag.

However, if you’re looking to do heavy-duty shredding and get through bigger piles of paper faster, our upgrade pick, the Fellowes 100% Jam Proof Shredder 73Ci, may be a better option.

Eufy Lumos ADesk Lamp

One of the best combinations of brightness, color temperature, and minimal glare, the Ais also widely adjustable and surprisingly affordable.

Along with natural daylight, dimmable ceiling lighting, and (if needed) freestanding lamps, a good desk lamp helps to provide layered, multidirectional lighting, which reduces eyestrain and irritation. Multiple, adjustable office lights reduce the contrast between the light on the object you are focused on and the surrounding area, allowing for detailed focus and the prevention of headaches. Adjustable desk lamps can make you more active and productive with cool light, or they can calm your mind and help you prepare for sleep after late-night work with warm hues. The link between color temperature and productivity is not concrete, however; some people may prefer warm lighting for long work hours, depending on their temperament and the tasks of their job.

We researched two dozen desk lamps and spent 2hours testing them. In our full guide on LED desk lamps, we recommend the Eufy Lumos ADesk Lamp as the best choice for most people. It has five brightness settings and four color-temperature modes which help make working at home—at any time of the day—a bit more comfortable. Its frosted panel eliminates direct glare and both its head and arm are more adjustable than others that we tested in the same price range. The Lumos’s nonreplaceable bulb promises to shine for 50,000 hours. Overall, we think the Ahas the best balance of style and functionality, at the best price, of all the other lamps we considered.

If you’re willing to spend a little more and are looking for a lamp that’s even brighter and has a broader range between color-temperature settings, consider our upgrade pick, the Eufy Lumos ELED Desk Lamp. Its head and arms pivot and tilt like the A4’s, but this lamp comes equipped with a rotating base that has two USB charging ports. It also has a backlit touch panel that makes it easier to turn on in the dark.

The IKEA Forså, a more affordable option for those on a budget, looks better than any multiple-setting LED lamp we saw at a reasonable price, and it has a 6-foot-long cord and a small weighted base that frees up surface space. This stylish, adjustable lamp was our previous top pick and throws a warm light on documents or around your desk. The drawback: It doesn’t have brightness or color-temperature settings but IKEA sells bulbs for the Forså with a 2,700-kelvin “warm daylight” temperature, and LED candelabra bulbs with a cooler temperature that are uncommon and somewhat pricey. That limitation is fine if you use the Forså exclusively for calm reading or for nighttime work. If you use it as your main desk light, your other office lighting must be warm, or the conflicting temperatures (colors) may cause discomfort. —Kevin Purdy and Anna Perling

The Duck EZ Start tape dispenses silently.

The Duck EZ Start dispenser is a little confusing to load the first time—the tape goes behind the plastic tabs and in front of the roller—and doesn’t come with directions, but it isn’t too hard to figure out with a quick Google search. Some tapes we tested, such as the Scotch Heavy Duty Shipping Packaging Tape, were extremely loud. The Duck EZ Start tape dispenses silently, which is a nice perk.

Business Rugged Versus True Rugged Designs

Staple business notebooks like the Dell Latitude 15000 and the larger-screen Latitude 15000 series are built more durably than the average consumer notebook. They generally have internally reinforced chassis and exteriors built from thicker materials. A typical consumer notebook, in contrast, will use less-dense materials and obtain much of its chassis strength from the simple fitting of the parts together, not actual reinforcement from an internal structure. A business machine’s better exterior and frame help protect the inner circuit boards from flexing and therefore give them a better chance of lasting longer.

Special-Use Mobile Workstations

When you mention a “workstation,” typically a desktop system comes to mind. But mobile workstations do exist, and they are becoming increasingly common as business-laptop offerings.

Compact mobile workstations such as the HP ZBook 14u G often bear a close resemblance to non-workstation business notebooks, but they include specialized hardware for professional applications. It’s that specialized hardware—a distinct dedicated graphics processor from Nvidia (Quadro) or AMD (FirePro)—that defines what’s actually a mobile workstation.

These workstation-focused graphics chips are specifically designed for use with 3D and 2D design applications, CAD/CAM modeling, and other graphically demanding programs. In addition, most mobile workstations will be “ISV certified,” tested and guaranteed to work with certain professional applications.

Lenovo ThinkPad P5workstation: Intel Xeon Eprocessor, Quadro GPU, and a 4K display

In addition to their specialized graphics cards, mobile workstations also offer the crème de la crème of mobile processors, storage drives, and as much RAM as you could need. They’re also offered with exclusive screen options, including models with extra-high resolutions (up to 4K), color-calibrated screens, and exceptional viewing angles. The main application for these machines is graphics work or scientific applications requiring massive calculation (sometimes GPU-assisted), and the standard set for their displays needs to be much higher than a run-of-the-mill business or consumer laptop.

How We Test All-in-One Printers

We put each all-in-one printer through a battery of home-grown tests to determine its performance and output quality. To test print speeds, we timed each device when printing a text document, a five-page mixed text/graphics project, and a color photo. We examined the output quality of both landscape and portrait images printed on each printer, and we recorded scan and copy times. To measure cost of ownership, we looked at the current street price of ink and the estimated number of pages that each cartridge can produce.

Brunch Box delivers a chic brunch for two with a very obvious French touch. The moment you land on their website you know exactly what they’re selling: a brunch in a box. They have a simple logo and choose to display the products in an Instagram style photo that is more than suited for their users. All other info, like contact or social profiles, are displayed in the footer to keep the design clean and simple.

Why photos matter

Your customers will remember 80% of what they see and a staggering 20% of what they read. Big product photos along with great web design are the two main areas you should focus on if you want to have an eye candy ecommerce site.

Add a ‘What’s new’ category

Your returning customers will want to see your latest collection. They don’t want to browse the old stuff while searching for new products. Include a ‘New products’ tab in your main navigation to make it more visible and also to tempt new visitors to stay on your site.

H&M has a ‘New Arrivals’ subcategory for each of their main categories: ladies, men, kids and home. From there on, you can filter the products based on category, size, color, or trend. With just a few clicks the customers find exactly what they want. Useful and time effective.

Have a ‘Recently viewed’ feature

It’s beyond annoying to shop around for something and to decide you want to revisit a product you saw a few clicks backs, but finding it isn’t that easy. The user has options: use the back button, navigate to that category again or check the browsing history.

Have a unique idea

It’s unbelievably competitive opening up a new ecommerce store. Being creative and selling something that people didn’t even know they needed should be your starting point. What can you craft? What are your skills? What products do people secretly want? It can be something as simple as a shop with only pink home furniture and decorations, or your own product.

SpringWise

BeardBrand – style for the urban beards man! Had no idea there’s a market for that. Apparently, their more than 47k Facebook fans and Instagram followers beg to differ. These guys sell a lot of stuff, from mustache combs to beard oils and they seem to keep on going.

Boxed identified a huge issue – massive shipping fees for bulk, heavy goods – and fixed it. A lot of their products have free shipping which is almost impossible to find elsewhere, and a wide variety of products, from household stuff to beauty care.

One of their biggest selling points? This one: “Did you know an average trip to a local warehouse club takes over 180 minutes? Boxed gives you back 17of them.”

Suck UK sells “The greatest gifts on earth!”. Would you like to get a customizable cookie stamper or a tongue-shaped bookmark? Yeah, you don’t need them, but it would be cool to have them, right? They also have retail stores to cater to those who like to walk around town in search of the funkiest gift ever.

What features to implement

10. Use Live Chat to help potential customers make faster decisions “The more things change, the more they are the same.” Alphonse Karr

Ecommerce is stronger than ever, but nothing beats that human interaction you have in an offline store.

Can this upset some of your users? You bet, but it will also drive in sales that otherwise wouldn’t happen. Your live chat agents will approach clients with a non-intrusive popup message and ask if they need assistance. Depending on the live chat software you’re using, you can even set up the waiting time or the required keywords for the popup to appear. This live chat strategy makes your user feel like he’s in a real store, having all his questions answered by a shop assistant.

Theory has the Live Chat button in the footer which makes it very unlikely to be spotted. The Live Chat window should pop up after a certain time.

After the “Don’t do this” example we have BNKR and ecobee, two very different sites that have good chat strategy. The buttons are placed right and also highlighted to ensure maximum visibility. This is proof that in almost all niches users need help in choosing the right product, whether a new car or a new pair of jeans.

Schuh went a step further and introduces Live chat video. While some customers like this interaction, most will be reluctant to have a video chat with a stranger. However, if users want, they can opt for text instead of video.

Place your live chat button in the most visible spot. You want it to be visible at all times, whether the user is scrolling or reading a product review.

Be aware of these shopping cart statistics

73% of your customers are likely to look for free shipping options high shipping costs account for around 44% of abandoned carts and only 6% due to slow shipping

Free shipping

We’re all bargain hunters and the phrase “Free shipping” instantly makes you want to keep on scrolling, even if you weren’t tempted to buy anything. Analyse your costs and if you can afford to offer it, then go ahead. This works best in the clothing, beauty products or accessories niches as in most cases the packages are small or average sized. Free shipping is the most important factor now and it also encourages customer loyalty, so choose wisely.

Tattly is a temporary tattoo store that decided to implement the free shipping policy. Their products weight just a few grams, so shipping costs are very low and this strategy didn’t make a hole in their revenue. Instead, this has the potential to bring in more customers because they’ll most likely be tempted to buy when they see free shipping. A huge flaw is that they don’t have a banner that informs about this. You have to visit their FAQ section and check how much they ask for shipping.

The second you land on HipVan you feel tempted to browse around as you see they have free shipping. This is a better strategy compared to the one used by Tattly. If you offer your clients something for free, make this your winning card and display it in the above the fold area to increase its visibility.

Flat rates shipping

A hassle-free method, this allows you to offer a flat fee for every order. Daniella Draper uses this strategy and before proceeding to billing, customers can see the shipping rates and then decide if they want to complete the order or not.

Shipping rates based on weight, order total or distance

This is more challenging to set up as you need to figure out exactly how much it will cost you in order to get some estimates.

Total Cycling offers shipping rated based on your address. Customers simply have to select their country to find out what shipping rates they can choose from.

Implement a shipping calculator

Simple Sugars uses a calculator that allows you to know the exact shipping costs without having to click to checkout. This increases your transparency and makes customers feel that they have control over their shipping fees.

Bold and Noble went even further. After you add a product to your basket you are redirected to your cart where you find out how much you’ll be charged for shipping.

Shipping numbers

97% of consumers consider tracking an order a very important feature

58% of shoppers would like to improve free or discounted shipping increased shipping costs cause 55% of abandoned carts the second reason for revisiting a store is free shipping, fast shipping being ranked number 14

58% of shopping transactions in the U.S. in the first quarter of 201had free shipping you can increase your order value by 30% if you have free shipping

Be creative

Cultivated Wit shows they have a more upbeat attitude and this is obvious when you scroll down and get to the newsletter signup field. The “Receive our propaganda” line is funny and tempting, it feels like you just have to sign up. If you look left, where they have the social button, you chuckle again as you read “Monitor our private lives.” It’s all about being fresh and knowing your audience.

Wristbands

Wristbands are a very specialized option for barcoding but also the best fit for the application of tracking people. You could always use a label on someone’s clothing but this will not be a reliable option since it’ll most likely fall off. A wristband is a reliable and easy to use means to get a barcode on a person that will not fall off and handle the rigors or everyday life.

Permanent

Most labels use an acrylic permanent adhesive that is great for smooth, clean surfaces. Once this adhesive fully bonds to the surface it will be difficult to remove and in the process you will either destroy the label itself or leave a fair amount of residue at the very least. Permanent adhesive works well on paper, wood, glass, plastic, and some metals.

Removable

Removable adhesives do not have the same strength or stickiness as permanent adhesives, which make it easy to remove a label without damaging it or the item. Most often, a removable adhesive is used when a label is being used on paperwork during a process and then a product box when completed. Some specialty retails will also want to use this type of adhesive so that they can easily remove a pricing label without any residue on the item.

High Tack

High tack adhesive is a type of permanent adhesive that has extra initial stickiness. This type of adhesive is typically used for situations where you don’t have a clean, smooth surface at room temperature to apply the label. If you are using labels on site in a dirty environment like a building work site, a high tack adhesive would ensure the label bonds to the surface more quickly.

Additional Media Features

Although we have covered all the basic features you will need to determine to find the right media for most applications, there are a couple more options that are not as common but need to be addressed. These options may put your media choice into the realm of custom made vs. stock, off-the-shelf option. Custom media may require extra lead times and can easily increase your overall cost of the solution.

The vast majority of media is going to be blank white but a variety of colors are available. When a label or tag is colored it is referred to as “flood coated”. This just means that the entire surface is colored without any edge or border. There are often a few sizes of colored labels available off-the-shelf but if your required size is not available it will have to be custom made.

Special Shapes

Every stock label, tag, and wristband is going to be a rectangle or square. This is not to say that other shapes are not possible though. Some applications may want a circular label for easier identification or to fit on a bottle. There are some stock butterfly shaped labels for jewelry labeling but anything else beyond rectangular will always have to be custom made.
