Feed Necks Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy feed necks, right? No!

KB Saxophone Necks

KB saxophone necks were modeled after the resonance, tonal color and flexibility of the popular Selmer Super Balanced Action and the early Mark VI saxophones. Each one of the KB saxophone necks is 100% handcrafted and they are custom fit to a large selection of vintage and modern saxophones.

KB Redwood Hand Hammered Copper neck – Photo from KB Sax

Every KB sax neck is made by first stamping out the two halves of the neck and then silver-soldering them together to create the neck tube. This results in a neck tube with uniform wall thickness throughout. The benefits these necks offer include more resonance, flexibility and consistency throughout the entire range of the saxophone, but the company’s Redwood and Canyon necks, for example, address the issues in different ways.

The Redwood neck was designed for those players who like the focus and compact sound that can be found on many Selmer Super Balanced Action saxophones. This neck is more resistant than the Canyon model but offers a dark, resonant sound from top to bottom, which can be played at various dynamic levels and even into the altissimo with great ease.

The Canyon neck is modeled after the characteristics of the early Mark VI’s, which can be described as more spread and free-blowing compared to the Redwood model. Whether you are looking for a neck that is more resistant and dark or a neck that is more free-blowing and flexible, the Redwood and Canyon model are two necks with the characteristics you should consider when looking to upgrade your sax neck.

Tino Schucht Saxophone Necks

The Tino Schucht necks are handmade in the traditional fashion: by forming a metal sheet around a mandrel to create a conical tube. This tube is then bent over a form to give it the specific shape of a saxophone neck. These necks feature quality German brass and are designed after the Selmer Balanced Action, Super Balanced Action and Mark VI saxophone necks.

Tino Schucht Old French neck Photo from Tino Schucht

These necks are handmade for quality control and are constructed with a wide assortment of variations that are compatible with both vintage and modern saxophones. This variety of materials, designs and constructions offers many opportunities for players to modify response, dynamics and tonality.

Tino Schucht offers various model necks from the Old French to the New York to the California model. Both the Old French and New York model were based on the Balanced Action neck, which offered a focused sound throughout the saxophone, but the New York model, compared to the Old French model, has a stronger core presence in the middle range.

The California model is made out of copper, which offers a warm and dark sound and a slightly different level of resistance compared to the Old French and New York models. Whether you’re looking for resistance, or a bright, dark, focused, or a spread sound, the Old French, New York and California models should help you narrow down which neck fits the characteristics you are looking for in your next neck.

How to Select a Saxophone Neck

When it is time to evaluate saxophone necks, it’s a good idea first to identify what you’re missing in your current setup. If you’re looking for more resistance, brighter, darker, edgier or less resistance while playing, this is something you should note before trying various manufacturers’ necks.

When you have decided on what you are looking for, it’s a good idea to contact the neck manufacturer or your repairs person to make sure it will fit your saxophone. Although many manufacturers state their necks will fit your model saxophone, whether it’s a Selmer, P. Mauriat, Yanagisawa, Keilwerth, Yamaha, or something else, it is wise to have measurements made so that once you receive the new saxophone neck to A/B test against your current setup, it’s a perfect fit.

The material of the saxophone neck also must be taken into consideration and can have a major to minor effect on the sound depending on your current setup.

Grinder Size

A smaller grinder will have a smaller feeding tube, while a larger one will have a larger feeding tube.  A smaller size will also have less power than a larger one.

So, what are you getting a grinder for? Are you looking to grind up some burgers or meatballs for you and your family every now and then? Do you plan on entertaining lots of friends? Are you planning on making big batches of homemade sausages? Or do you need a meat grinder to process your game meat? These questions will help you determine what size meat grinder you need.

What Are You Grinding

If you are just grinding up meats like beef, chicken and pork, then most grinders will be able to do that without a problem. Game meats like vension, elk and wild boar are a tad tougher but any of the grinders that I’ve reviewed shouldn’t have a problem with being able to grind those meats.

I would say that the most important consideration when it comes to buying a meat grinder is the cost. Most of us have a budget so there’s only so much we can spend on a meat grinder. That’s why I’ve created pages with different price ranges so you can look for a grinder that will fit your budget.

Don’t forget to think of your meat grinder as an investment, especially if you are making your own dog food or processing your own game. You will be saving a lot of money in the long run, so get a grinder that is going to last.

Stainless Steel

If you want a stainless steel grinder, you are going to be paying much more for it than for a grinder that is made from aluminum or steel. However, you can’t beat the look of a stainless steel appliance. If you will be grinding a lot then a stainless steel grinder is definitely the way to go as they are heavy duty and more durable, since the internal gears are made of metal and not plastic.

Stainless steel grinders also come with stainless steel accessories, so you can put them in the dishwasher to clean afterwards which is a nice bonus.

From the fore end

Scrag end – the bony part of the neck, which is cut across into thick slices. It has lots of flavour and is best used for slow cooking.

Middle neck or neck –similar to the scrag, this can be boned to produce lean neck fillets.

Shoulder – sold whole or divided into two halves. It can be boned and either rolled into a neat roasting joint or diced for use in casseroles and curries. It also makes the best mince. The shin (i.e. the part lower down the front leg) can be removed from a whole shoulder. It is known as the fore shank and is ideal for braising.

From the middle

Best end of neck or neck best end – this consists of the first eight ribs of the animal, known as ‘the rack’. The meat and fat are usually trimmed away from the tops of the bones before cooking, and this is known as ‘French trimming’. A rack can be cut between the bones to give lamb cutlets.

Loin – can be left as one joint: on the bone for roasting or boned and rolled into a joint, which is great for stuffing if some of the flank is still attached. It can also be cut between the bones into loin chops.

Chump – this cut comes from where the loin meets the leg, and can be divided to produce two chump chops and a small, on-the-bone roasting joint called the chump end. Alternatively, the whole chump can be boned and sliced across into lamb steaks, or tied into a nice, plump little joint that is sometimes described on restaurant menus as the rump. Also ideal for stewing.

Saddle of lamb –he loin from either side of the animal, still joined by the backbone. It weighs about 3kg and easily serves 8-people.

Breast – the belly area of the lamb. Usually boned and rolled for roasting or pot-roasting.

From the hind legs

Leg – a whole leg of lamb weighs between 2.25-2.75kg and will feed eight people, but can also be divided into two smaller roasting joints: the knuckle end and the fillet end. Whole legs can also be sliced across, on or off the bone, into leg steaks for grilling. Legs can be boned and rolled into an easy-to-carve roasting joint.

Butterflied – a ‘butterflied’ leg of lamb has simply been open-boned to leave one large piece of meat, shaped roughly like a butterfly.

Ingredients to Look for and Some to Avoid

As with most dogs, when choosing a food for your Boston Terrier you should look for a food that has good sources of protein and fat.

Ideally you will select a dog food that features two or three meat proteins in the first several ingredients listed. Both whole meats and meat meals are good sources of protein. Whole meats refer to foods such as whole chicken, beef, fish, and lamb. Some people don’t like meat meals as much as whole meats but they are a concentrated form of the meat in which the moisture has been removed. They contain several times as much protein as a whole meat. Meat meals are usually quite acceptable as one of the first ingredients in a good quality dog food. They are used by many good dog food brands.

Dogs also need good sources of fat. You should look for named fat sources such as chicken fat. Other named fats also provide needed nutrients such as fish oil which can provide omega-fatty acid to help keep the skin and coat healthy. Puppies can benefit from DHA which is Docosahexaenoic acid. This is a specific form of omega-fatty acid that helps with brain and eye development. Older dogs seem to benefit from medium chain triglycerides which feature medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs). These have been found to help older dogs feel and act younger. They are often made from a combination of coconut oil and other oils.

If you want to avoid corn, soy, and wheat in your dog food, your Boston Terrier may still be able to eat an alternative grain such as barley or oats. Or you can feed a grain free dog food that uses an alternate source of carbs that is low glycemic such as sweet potatoes. You don’t have to feed a dog food with an excessively high percentage of protein but it’s a good idea to keep the carb percentage low to moderate.

If your Boston Terrier has a food allergy or food sensitivity, you may need to work with your veterinarian to identify the food triggers unless they are very obvious. There are lots of good foods with alternative meat proteins today as well as limited ingredient diets which we will discuss below.

Orijen Senior Dog

Best Dog Foods for Boston Terriers with Skin Problems/Allergies

Boston Terriers can have some skin problems. Many of these issues seem to be related to glutens in dog foods, though they can also have hair loss due to stress, hot spots, parasites, rashes, and other common skin problems. Avoiding dog foods that contain glutens may help some dogs. If your dog needs to avoid common proteins, you can try this food.

Wild Calling! Xotic Essentials Rabbit Meal Recipe

Best Dog Foods for Boston Terriers with Sensitive Stomachs

We’ve already mentioned that some Boston Terriers are susceptible to food sensitivities that affect their digestion and excretion. If your dog has a sensitive stomach it can be an indication of a food sensitivity, which is different from a food allergy. A dog with a food sensitivity will have gastrointestinal issues such as vomiting or diarrhea. Or it could be something more serious.

A dog with a sensitive stomach can often be helped by feeding the right dog food. Sticking to a limited ingredient diet food with as few ingredients as possible can reduce the chance of your dog having a bad reaction to something in the food.

We recommend Natural Balance L.I.D. Limited Ingredient Diets Sweet Potato & Fish Formula Small Breed Bites Dry Dog Food. This food is grain free with limited ingredients. It has good quality, alternative ingredients that are easily digestible for a dog with a sensitive stomach. And it contains no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. The first five ingredients are: Sweet Potatoes, Salmon, Salmon Meal, Canola Oil, and Potato Fiber. It has 2percent crude protein, percent crude fat, 4.percent crude fiber, and percent moisture. It has 380 kcal/cup and it’s an all life stage formula. If your dog can’t eat some of the ingredients in this food, Natural Balance has other recipes that you might check.

Turnout rugs

The best turnout rug for your horse will keep him warm and dry while he’s in the field, providing a comfortable but durable layer against the elements. Rug design has come a long way from the days of the simple canvas New Zealand, but this does mean that choosing an outdoor model from the many variations on the market can be little overwhelming.

Panic not, because we’ve devised the ultimate no-nonsense guide to buying a turnout rug. From filling weights to fillet strings, we’ve got the subject covered.

The outer shell

A turnout rug needs a tough outer shell, able to withstand not just the elements but also hazards ranging from other horses’ teeth to bramble bushes.

Rugs come in different deniers, denoted with a D rating, which refers to the number of yarns used to make one thread. The higher the denier, the stronger the fabric.

When choosing denier, consider your horse’s lifestyle. A lower denier of around 600D may well suffice for the more placid horse or one living alone or with a quiet companion, but could turn out to be false economy for a serial rug-wrecker. A higher denier – some rate at 1680D – is a better bet for the rough and tumble of the herd.

Further fabric options include rip-stop construction, where an interwoven cross-hatch halts any rips in their tracks – a reassuring extra if you’ve ever been to fetch your horse and found him with his rug hanging in strips around his fetlocks. Another choice is ballistic nylon, a material that’s as tough as it sounds. A good rug will have some potential to rip, however, in the event that the horse gets himself caught up and starts to panic.

A dry horse will be a warmer one, so it goes without saying that a turnout rug should be waterproof. Although a high denier count does not indicate a rug’s waterproof qualities, a tightly woven fabric does tend to repel water (and wind) more efficiently.

The rug’s waterproof qualities come from the treatment of its outer material, so look for modern finishes and barrier technologies designed to keep the wet out. Some fabrics are rated for their waterproof qualities (5,000 WP would be high). Bear in mind, however, that waterproofing can diminish with age and wear, so be prepared to re-treat rugs when necessary. Incessant rain may eventually penetrate even a quality rug, most probably through any seams and openings, so opt for a seamless model to minimise this or invest in a spare.

Almost as important as a rug’s outer waterproofing is its breathability. Unless you want your horse to be wrapped in the equivalent of a sweaty plastic bag, pay attention to the rug’s ability to allow perspiration to evaporate. If you over-rug him, though, no amount of breathability will prevent the formation of damp and sweaty patches.

Cut and colour

Modern turnouts are designed to cocoon a horse in an envelope of warmth, with many offering a choice of shapes to cover the extremities.

The standard neck shape stops at the withers and is good for warmer weather. A high-neck finishes further up for a more snug effect and tends to prevent rain draining down the neck and inside the shoulder area of the rug, while a ‘combo’ features full neck padding for the ultimate in protection.

Trakker is well-known for producing a great value winter bundle and this is the latest incarnation of exactly that.

The heavyweight jacket and fleece will keep Baltic conditions at bay. Add the trousers into the equation and you have an out-and-out winter all-rounder.

This well-insulated, sleeveless jacket does just that, and in performance terms it stands up to garments that cost considerably more than this.

The down-like 3M Thinsulate inner provides warmth and can be compressed for ease of transport.

Three zipped pockets – two external and one internal – and a high-quality zip complete the basics, with the waterproof and wind-resistant outer providing further performance tech.

It’s well made and features a range of well-thought-out extras.

Spyder MRPaintball Gun

The last choice when you really want to buy the best paintball gun under 300 is Spyder MRPaintball Gun which has a classic design for all of the beginners. This gun resembles military gun but it looks smaller than the real one.

It is also designed with cool feed neck damper and you can also get a removable shoulder stock. This paintball gun is also made from the highest aluminum material and it has comfortable rubber grips.

So, this gun can be a bit heavier than the plastic gun, but it is not as heavy as the real military gun. You still feel comfortable when carrying this gun. The gun is also equipped with 12” barrel. Meanwhile, you can use the angled feed tube to see your target and you can also easily remove the bold.

Overall, this paintball gun is really attractive because of its cool design and it also has a strong and sturdy body to make it always durable in all condition. This gun works with a compressed air or COwhich is a good choice for anyone who wants to buy a mechanical style paintball gun.

As I mentioned before, the good of this paintball gun lies on its construction which is made from the highest quality aluminum material.

Investing In a Good Paintball Gun for a Beginner

Though I did notice here above that it can be a challenging task to look for your perfect gun, it can be as easy as just choosing any paintball randomly that your friend suggested to you.

Nevertheless, the right way is to do your personal research and discover what kind of gun you intended and what kind of paintball you desire on playing.

The perfect gun of your friend might now fit your mode of the game. Therefore, you should take the time to explore and know different paintball gun reviews before you think what to buy.

Ninja Air Aluminum HPA NPaintball Tank 3000psi

The number of guns available is designed to use CO2, and you can look forward to paying around 5-bucks.

Experiencing mechanical paintball guns will improve and extend the gameplay without obstacle because there is a refill area on most paintball fields.

It is known to all that woodsball is usually a paintball that is played in the woods! Or, an organized speed-ball field at any other place.

Although you will find limits and the fields are generally large acres and the covers are trees, rocks and other things there are in nature or the covers are build with of dirt, sticks, plywood.

This type of game is superbly fast paced and will last around 3-minutes. Though it only lasts for a while, it does not understand that nothing happens!

While you are enjoying speedball games, you will have to move very fast to get the right angle on your fellow competitors that are covering themselves behind inflatable bunkers.

Throughout speedball play, thousands of paintballs are interchanged between players during a single round, and you can desire to witness more than points played in just under minutes of play.

There is a possibility that you will most likely buy and store cases of painting between game-plays. It can be said that if you are not needed to use the paint that is sold in the field.

Paint comes in different kinds of quality, and it can also be said that the quality of the paint will influence your exactness. So, you need to spend in decent quality made ammo for your paintball gun.

Even though you spend in the most expensive and high standard paintball gun, it does not imply that it will enhance your game or accuracy if you fill it with crappy paintballs.

Also, the model will not provide you any sign about the acting of the paintballs. It can be said that, if you were given in high-quality paint, you need to rescue them and ensure you store them entirely to prevent them from any damage.

Store your gun, equipment and ammo in dry and cool place. In the event you are keeping your stuff disassembled in various parts, you have to be demonstrated to change the position of the paintballs to confine breakage or dimpling.

Dimpled or old paintballs could break and leak, or make artificial spin and even leak into the barrel causing, even more, internal loss.

If you custom order your paintball preferably of purchasing them from your local store, it may reduce incorrectly stored ammunition.

To avoid purchasing impair goods when you are in a store, always open the container to test the accessories that you are purchasing. If the paintballs are featuring round, you will be able to fire them nicely.

Barrel Upgrades

Like I did notice many times here above, you will find so many factors that affect exactly. Yet another important factor is the barrel that you have with your gun.

You have the choice to develop your present barrel by purchasing a stand-alone barrel and customize it to fit your current marker.

Pre-installed barrels might scatter way too much air than required and that will prevent the accuracy. Besides, you need to pay focus to the size of the barrel you want to purchase because the length of a barrel can also affect exactness.

It is a simple belief among game-players that if you have long barrel then your shot is more exactness.

Nevertheless, this is not the case because of the simple fact that the most accurate paintball units comprise small barrels. Therefore, if you spend in a new barrel, confirm it is made for obviousness.

Battery Life

Battery life also powers accuracy. You need to focus to the battery because it can be difficult to understand when the battery life starts to lose. In these circumstances, you might not even know that your battery life is going down.

Get a High-Flow Regulator

Spending in a high-flow controller will do magic for you. It will originally turn your average unit into a super unit. It will profoundly enhance the performance of your device as well as develop the accuracy importantly.

If any of your team-mates or rivals demand they have the best paintball guns, it is most likely because of a high-flog regulator.

FlexValve Technology

The valve of this Tippmann XPhenom Paintball Marker works below 300 PSI which upgrades its efficiency. It is also offering the players more than 1400 shots.

The valve design features that recoil is virtually removed to improve the accuracy of shots. The seamless design also includes several wear parts making it easy to maintain.

The 9.inch of Barrel

This confirms you to shot far away targets up to 150 ft. It also permits you to use five different modes which include Response, semi-auto, NPPL, and a cyclone feed system. You can fire 1balls per second using these features. There is no need to use batteries in this model.

The U.S. Army Project Salvo is constructed with a standard 1inch anodized quick thread barrel, shroud, stock and rails. It features a.6caliber marker that can be paired with the standard paintballs that are available at local stores.

Multiple Critical Systems

The Dye Proto Rail MaXXed Paintball Gun and the internal design enhance its performance.

For example, it features a polycarbonate pipe shield that cleans the anti-chop eye system and confirms the eyes are always observing the ball drop and the breech. It also features an eye pipe system which removes double feeding and missed feeds.

Color Coded O-rings

The coded O-rings are best for maintenance. They make sure that the user can easily control the gun in case of any matter that might occur. Replacing the O-rings is not a difficult task because they can be easily identified because of their individual colors.

Good Ergonomics

The Empire Axe looks excellent on the hands. It is light enough that running around a lot will not make it feel hefty. The Empire Axe has a plenty of room in the grips to let players hold it in many ways compared to the Empire Mini.

The Axe features with an internal gas line. This implies that you can quickly change hands without hitting a gas line.

Empire Axe Performance

The Empire Axe shoots very straight. This is also what many other players who have used the Axe for the first time say. You can simply feel any kick to it and the smaller marker size helps lower any recoil.

It also features super quiet. You can simply hear it even in an indoor field. The Empire Axe never had a single paint break after shooting off around pods.

Grill Friends Silicone Brush

Silicone brushes are the best thing to happen to barbecue since the charcoal briquet. I long ago relegated my natural and nylon bristle brushes to cleaning computer keyboards. Silicone brushes load up with lots of sauce, deliver it evenly, and are easy to clean and decontaminate. They are dishwasher safe. We have three: One for barbecue, one my wife uses for egg washes and other baking, and one for whatever. There are many brands on the market.   Meathead

There are pros and cons to using a cover.

Pros. They keep rain, snow, wasps, birds, and other vermin out. If you have a shinyt stainless steel rig, it will keep it shinier. An expensive grill under cover will attract fewer thieves.

Cons. They are a bit of a pain because you have to wait til the grill cools and they gather rain when left off. But they can also trap moisture and humidity underneath and actually encourage rust and mold growth. For these reasons I cover only my grills and smokers that can collect water on the inside like my Weber Smokey Mountain, my Hasty Bake, and my pellet smoker (if the pellets ever melt and then dry out, getting your smoker up and running is an all day sucker).

Cheapo covers last only a year or two. A good cover will last five years or more. All the plastic or vinyl ones I’ve tried cracked and fell apart in two to three years. The canvas covers rotted in a few years. The best were canvas laminated or impregnated with polyurethane or PVC.   Meathead

Weber’s Grill Pan Sears and Allows Smoke Through

Another favorite grill topper is the Weber Style Grill Pan, and I was pleased to see the folks at Cooks Illustrated agree. It has plenty of slots for smoke to travel through, and plenty of surface to brown things like salmon cakes.   Meathead

Lodge Logic Pro Cast Iron Griddle Can Put a Gorgeous Sear on Salmon, Steak, or Use It For Pancakes And Eggs

You need a good cast iron griddle. Especially if you like fish, burgers, grilled sandwiches, home fries, or pancakes. Coat the flat side with oil, and you can sear fish so it is golden and crispy on the outside just like that great pan-seared fish you get in restaurants. Throw some dried herbs onto the flame, and you’ll get a whisp of smoke in the meat.

You can even bring it indoors and it will straddle two burners. Use the flat side for pancakes. Flip it over and you get grill marks and conduction cooking from the ridges on steaks, burgers, or asparagus, and the fats and juices drip into the grooves where they vaporize and flavor the meat and cook by radiation.

This is a very handy tool. One word of caution. You may need two. If you use it for fish a lot, the flavor will remain on the surface, even after cleaning, so you won’t be able to use it for pancakes.

I have two of them by Lodge, known for quality cast iron, and I use the ridged sides of both, one on top and one on the bottom, for making paninis. And my spatchcocked (butterflied) Cornish game hens pressed between the flat sides are unbelievably crisp and juicy in only 20 minutes. It is 20″ x 7/16″.   Meathead

Lodge Cast Iron Panini Press Makes World Class Paninis And Grilled Cheese

These flat weights are great for making grilled cheese sandwiches and other paninis, and even bacon. When I make sandwiches I preheat the press on high on the side burner, and then put the sandwich on the grill grates and the hot press on top so I can cook both sides at once. You can use them for keeping bacon from curling up on the grill with these, too. The Lodge model is preseasoned. Although the handle is supposed to provide heat protection, wear a glove.   Meathead

Thermoworks Timestick Is The Best Cook’s Stopwatch And Alarm

I keep a cooking diary. In it I write down vital info about every cook so I can learn what works and what doesn’t. OK. So I’m anal. But being anal got me this gig. The two most important variables to track in any cook are time and temp. So I used to wear a stopwatch around my neck when I cooked. Click when I fire up. Click when it is up to temp. Click when the meat goes on. Click when I add more wood or charcoal. Click when I turn. Click when I sauce. Click when I take it off. But have you seen the new digital stopwatches? They are a real pain with faaaar too many features and bells and whistles. My last one sat in my desk between cooks and beeped every hour and the only way I could make it shut up was with a hammer. True story. Now I use the very sinple user friendly Timestick.

It can count down or up and when a count down alarm sounds, the count up timer starts so you can see how much time has elapsed since your alarm. It’s range is 9hours 9minutes and 9seconds, there is a keypad lock so you don’t accidentally screw things up, there’s a lanyard so you can wear it around your neck, it comes in nine colors, it’s splash proof, and it has a magnet on back so I can stick it to my grill, fridge, or oven. Operates between 3and 104°F. Best of all, you won’t need to read the manual. Love it.   Meathead

Knob Where You Need It Makes Grilling Safer And Easier

You’re supposed to turn off the propane tank between cooks to prevent expensive leaks and more expensive explosions. But many grills don’t have easy access to the tanks, and it sure is easy to forget. Knob Where You Need It makes it easy to turn off the gas and easy ti remember. There are no instructions in the box so you need to go to their website. I suggest printing them. Installation is easy for most people (I made a dumb mistake). Please note: You need to drill a 1/2″ hole in your grill. Watch the video below to see the installation process. – Greg Rempe

Lafuma Futura Zero Gravity Chair, Black Steel Frame, Cedre

The famous French recliner by Lafuma. I own two of them, and, man, are they comfortable. Park it next to the cooler, pour a cold one into your stein, set your remote temperature monitor on top of the cooler, and relaxxxxxx. There are cheaper knockoffs, but I haven’t tried them yet.   Meathead

Chimney Cap

Most kamado smokers have an airflow control/chimney at the top that is very good at controlling the oven temp. They have one innate flaw: When it rains, water gets into the cooking chamber! If you have a Big Green Egg, Primo, or Kamado Joe, or any other leaky kamado, here’s the solution. Made from aluminum, it is simple and effective.   Meathead

FoodSaver Vacuum Sealer

The best way to store food more than a week is in the freezer. Foods lose few nutirents and little quality when frozen. But if they are kept for longer than a few weeks, meats can oxidize, fats can get rancid, and the surface can harden from freezer burn. Especially pork and seafood. Oxygen is the enemy. So I pack food for storage is with a vacuum sealer like the FoodSaver Vacuum Sealer. You put the food in a plastic bag, insert it into the machine and it sucks out the air and seals the bag. Make sure you mark the date on the bag. It is a great way to store cooked foods too. Put your pulled pork in the bag, add a little sauce and seal. When it is time to serve, place the bag into a pot of simmering water. It reheats rapidly and tastes almost as good as when it came out of the smoker.   Meathead

Grill Grabber

Use a Grill Grabber to lift your hot and dirty grill grates, even if there’s the food still on them. I use mine when I need to add coals, wood, water to water pans, or to rescue food that has dropped through the grates. This may seem like a frivolity, but it is a thoroughly useful tool.   Meathead

OXO Good Grips Tongs

Dishwasher safe stainless steel with OXO’s popular nonslip rubber handles, they are the winner of the Tylenol/Arthritis Foundation Design Award. They are spring loaded and the ends are scalloped for better gripping. There is a loop for hanging and a mechanism that locks them in closed position for storing (which has failed after several years on all three pairs that I have). Regardless, they are still my faves. I just store them with a cardboard toilet paper core over the ends.

The 18″ tongs don’t have the locking mechanism, but they are necessary if you have a deep pit. But be warned, the longer the tongs, the less leverage you have and the harder it is to get a grip. I also recommend their nylon tipped tongs for use on non-stick cookware.

LamsonSharp Fish Tongs

A jumbo hybrid of tongs and spatulas, this is the proper tool for flipping fish, burgers, and other crumbly foods. Rosewood handle protects you against the heat, and there is a leather loop for hanging. They come with a lifetime warranty. I find them to be indispensable.   Meathead

Stiff Metal Spatula

Spatulae come in slotted and solid, and I recommend the solid with a good insulated sturdy handle. The solid is best for pressing things down on a griddle, like when you are making Diner Burgers on a griddle or in a frying pan. I like the Weber Style 644Professional-Grade Fish Turner.  Meathead

Double Pie Iron

Here’s how to make two perfectly toasted panini style grilled sandwiches at once. Use this old fashioned double pie iron, originally designed for filled pies, for everything from Grilled Cheese to Pulled Pork.

Just butter your sandwich on the outside, open up the hinged mold, insert the sandwiches and put it over the coals, campfire, or gas grill. This Old Mountain cast iron double square pie iron is 1/2″ x 1/4″ and is pre-seasoned and ready to use. The long handle allows you to grill in comfort away from a camp fire.  – Meathead

My wife hasn’t noticed the burn hole yet. It’s pretty substantial. For the life of me I don’t understand why the deck didn’t go up in flames and take the house with it. Must be some sort of flame retardant in the wood. But a hunk of charcoal somehow jumped from my grill and tried to escape before I caught it. But not before it burned a serious hole.  Meathead

Bayou Classic 8.Quart Cast Iron Dutch Oven

Forget the fancy high end pricey Le Cruset French Oven, this is the one you want for cowboy cooking and camping, and it comes in handy around the house. It’s perfect for whole chickens or slow braising in the oven or in the grill.

You can even sit it on top of coals and shovel more coals on top of the flat lid with a raised rim, and you can cook classic chili, baked beans, cornbread, casseroles, and even cobblers. It is 13″ wide x 7″ high, weighs 2pounds and includes a perforated aluminum basket for steaming, frying, or boiling.   Meathead

Kitchen shears

You want good stiff scissors for cutting a chicken apart, for snipping herbs, cutting pizza, butcher string, opening packages, and many other tasks. Get sturdy stainless blades so you can cut through the ribs of chickens. The best models come apart at the hinge so they can go in the dishwasher and you can get them really clean.   Meathead

Garlic press

When a recipe calls for garlic to be crushed, minced, or pressed, I use a garlic press. A good garlic press releases more oils and flavors than mincing with a knife and pressed garlic coats the food more evenly than mincing.

A good garlic press is an important kitchen tool. Get one that is sturdily built, that is easy to grip, that is easy to clean, and has a large hopper to hold big cloves. Avoid non-stick models. I have a well-used Trudeau Garlic Press  Meathead

Digital kitchen scale

I don’t know how I lived without a good, accurate digital kitchen scale for so many years. It is so important. Look at salt for example, cup of table salt has almost twice as much salinity as a cup of Morton’s kosher salt because Morton’s kosher salt has more air space between the grains. But a pound of all salts contain exactly the same amount of sodium chloride.

Without a scale, making a brine requires a calculator. Flour and sugar have the same problem. Packed brown sugar or loose brown sugar. Big diff. Ever try to measure a tablespoon of honey? Did you get it all into the bowl or leave a lot of it on the spoon. There are plenty of conversion tables out there that help you convert. My favorite is the OXO Good Grips Stainless Food Scale with Pull-Out Display.  It can weight accurately up to 1pounds as well as fractions of an ounce. Push a button and it converts to metric. Put the bowl on the scale and push a button and it zeros out so the bowl’s weight is not included. The top comes off for easy cleaning. It will significantly improve your cooking.   Meathead

Grandma’s Secret Spot Remover

I first heard about this from a competition cook. To say I was skeptical is an understatement. A spot remover that will remove the grease stains on almost all my shirts is something I considered to be as elusive as unicorns and perpetual motion machines. So I bought a ounce bottle and tried it on one of my t-shirts.

The instructions say that all you need is just a drop. Sure. I used three drops. My shirt came out so clean I could not find where the stain had been originally. So I tried it on a dress shirt, but fearful it would ruin it, I used only one drop. Again, the grease was gone! So I hauled out all my saucy and greasy shirt, 1in all, put Grandma to work, tossed them all into one tub, and before long, I had a new wardrobe. Utterly amazing stuff. And just for the record, I have been doing my own laundry since I went away to college, even through 40 years of marriage. May be a contributing factor to our longevity.

Even my wife is impressed with Grandma. She has used it on some of her finery including her Mom’s table cloth with ancient spaghetti stains, stains that Oxi-Clean, her go to remover, couldn’t handle.

The label says it is good for “oil, grease, paint, makeup, grass, inks, blood, baby formula, tar, spaghetti sauce, coffee, rust, beadine, tumeric, fabric bleed, and pet stains”. The only caveat on the label is to “check garment for colorfastness.”   Meathead

Scrag and middle neck

Two adjoining cuts taken from the top of the lamb, just below the head, these cuts are cheaper than the best end of neck, which is further towards the middle of the animal. These cuts are best when diced and stewed in liquid. Middle neck is available as chops or fillet – look for even-coloured meat with a layer of fat running through it.

Contoured Design

The main advantage of using a trimmer with a contoured design is the fact that it offers an ergonomic feel. This means that it won’t be easy to feel tired even if you work for an extended period. Well, professional barbers are likely to find themselves in a busy environment, especially if you give the best in your workplace. For this reason, you need a hair trimmer with a contoured design to help you deliver the same exceptional results every now and then. Yes, the trimmer is none other than the Andis 04710.

They include

The Price: This is a factor in almost any product. You want to choose a product based on the size of your budget. Outline trimmers listed here highly vary in prices, depending on the number of features and versatility. Therefore, regardless of what you decide to go for, make sure it is within your budget.

Corded/Cordless: Whether an outline trimmer is corded or cordless is a really important factor to consider. If you have a socket and you are buying a trimmer, perhaps to use in the bathroom or generally in the house, then having a corded beard will do no harm. However, if you are buying a beard to use it outside, especially where there is no socket, then your focus should be on a cordless trimmer, as it is more convenient.

Maintenance: It is a sure thing that no one wants an outline trimmer which is hard to maintain. It is annoying if you buy a trimmer, but a few days later, it starts to depreciate and even snag as well as tug on hairs. As a result, you should look at the cleaning and maintenance features comprehensively to avoid future regrets. Luckily, most of the trimmers listed above are easy to maintain.

Styling Features: If you are after keeping a somewhat traditional-styled beard, and are not interested in shaving funky, unique patterns into it, a trimmer you choose must not have attachments featured in various sizes and shapes. Nevertheless, if you are interested in keeping a particular type of beards such as a goatee or stubbly one, then a trimmer you should go for must have attachments or features to help you achieve and maintain your preferred style.

Now you know the factors you should look for exactly when buying an outline trimmer. Look at them thoroughly, and you won’t go astray as far as getting a desirable, top performing and efficient outline trimmer is concerned.

Take a Test Drive

Ask your local PADI Dive Shop if they offer a Dry Suit Diver specialty course. It’s a great way to  try out a dry suit, practice buoyancy, and learn important safety procedures.

Your local dive shop will also play an important role in the ongoing care of your drysuit. Seals inevitably tear, and sometimes drysuit zippers need some TLC. Having a local place to get your dry suit serviced is important to preserving your investment.

Think long-term and invest in a good fit

How does one determine if you’ve found a “good” fit? Easy, just pretend the dive shop is actually the gearing-up area of your favorite dive spot. Don’t feel silly, you’re being a smart shopper!

Trying on a membrane suit? Be sure to have an undergarment on while trying the exercises above.

If you’re not able to complete all three of the exercises above, the suit is too restrictive. A suit that is too big or too small creates safety issues so even if it’s the right color or right price, don’t buy the suit if it’s not the right fit.

Search for a PADI Dive Shop to get additional advice and insights on your dry suit purchase, or to register for a Dry Suit Diver course. To start planning your next cold water adventure, we offer the following for inspiration:

The Dry Suit Diver specialty counts as one of the certifications towards Master Scuba Diver. Check out this video of cold water Master Scuba Diver Janna Nichols as she shows us around the emerald seas of Seattle, Washington, USA.

Purpose and Budget

Bass guitars vary widely in quality and price, so before you start shopping, determine how much you want to spend.

For beginners unsure of their talent or dedication to learning to play the bass, there are many good, affordable “starter” basses available. These instruments tend to have lower quality hardware and electronics, but they are typically very playable and will serve a new bassist well through the early stages of learning and performing with the instrument.

However, more experienced or dedicated players may want to set their sights a little higher, and invest in a bass guitar with richer tonewoods, better electronics, and upgraded hardware. A higher-quality bass will sound better, feel better, and serve a musician longer.

Bass Guitar Construction and Design – Parts And Their Functions

It’s important to have a good understanding of the basic parts of a bass guitar before you start shopping. Understanding how the instrument is designed and built, and knowing what the different parts are called will help you ask good questions and make informed decisions.

Truss Rod

Inside the neck is a metal truss rod that helps prevent the neck from bending or twisting. Bass strings are thicker than guitar strings and create a lot of tension on the neck. Truss rod adjustments allow the neck to be straightened if it becomes bowed or twisted, and are also used when adjusting string height for optimal playability.

Bass Scale Lengths

With its 34” scale, the Fender Standard Precision Bass is typical of most other standard-size electric basses, which share its scale length.

There are a few short-scale basses, such as the Fender Mustang, various Hofner Violin Bass models, or the Gibson EBO, that are around 30″. These are a good choice for young players with small hands who may have trouble playing a standard-size instrument.

The Hofner Ignition Series Violin Bass has a shorter 30” scale and is based on the model made famous by Paul McCartney.

A long-scale neck usually has a 35″ scale. This longer scale gives you a few more frets, and is most often used for five- and six-string basses because it improves string tension and minimizes floppiness on the low strings.

The Schecter Stiletto Studio-5-String Bass has a longer-than-average 35” scale.

Four-String Bass Guitars

Most bass guitars have four strings and new players should probably start with a four-string bass. These basses are perfectly adequate for most musical styles, and the necks are smaller than those on five- and six-string basses, making them easier to handle and learn with.

The 4-string Fender Standard Jazz Bass is among the most iconic electric basses ever; the original having been developed in 1960 by Leo Fender.

Five- and Six-String Bass Guitars

Five-string basses add a lower B string, giving the instrument a deeper range. The neck of a five-string bass is necessarily wider than a four-string, making it a little harder to play. Five-string basses are popular with some hard rock, metal, fusion, and jazz bassists.

With its additional low B String the G&L L-2500 5-String Bass offers extended range.

Six-string basses have an even more extended range due to their low B string and high C string. Six strings require a wider neck yet, which can be difficult for many players to handle. Though challenging, they’re ideal for bass players who do a lot of soloing as they widen the range and provide room for greater creativity.

Fretless Basses

Standard bass guitars have fretted necks, with metal frets dividing the fingerboard into half-step increments. These frets make it easy to see where each note is played on the neck.

A fretless bass, however, has a smooth neck, similar to an upright bass or violin. Hitting the right notes with the right intonation is challenging and not for beginners. Fretless bass players rely on muscle memory and a well-trained ear. They choose the fretless bass for its smoother, warmer sound and its ability to provide glissando effects like a standup acoustic bass.

The Ibanez SRF70Portamento 5-String Fretless Electric Bass delivers powerful tone, but is more challenging to play than fretted basses.

Bass Tonewoods

The type of wood that is used in the body of the bass guitar will impact its tone and resonance. New players don’t need to be too concerned with the type of wood used for their bass guitar body. But if you are looking for a specific sound from your bass, then the body wood could be an important factor.

Alder is often used for bass guitar bodies. It creates a very balanced tone, with great clarity and a very full sound.

The alder body of the Fender American Professional Precision Bass produces great clarity and sustain.

Agathis is a popular body wood because it is relatively inexpensive. It provides a fairly balanced tone with a slight emphasis on low-mid tones that gives it a rich sound.

There are several species of ash used on bass guitar bodies, with subtle differences, but in general the wood produces a bright, full sound, similar to alder. Swamp ash is especially desirable due to its beautiful grain.

A burst finish applied to the swamp ash body of the G&L L-2000 Bass adds beauty to the wood’s natural figuring and resonance.

Frequently used on less expensive instruments, it is a softer wood that does not resonate as much as other tonewood options. Some bass players think this creates a flat sound, while others feel the short sustain is ideal for fast, complex playing techniques.

Mahogany is a popular tonewood for bass guitars because it produces a soft, warm tone that emphasizes the low-mid and lower-range tones, and creates longer sustain. It is a dense wood, however, and will feel heavier on your shoulder than ash or agathis.

The Ibanez SR505-String Bass has a mahogany body for the warmth associated with that wood.

Maple is also a dense wood, so it creates a well-sustained sound like mahogany. Maple, however, produces a bright, clear tone that many musicians find valuable in a studio setting.

The NS Design CRRadius Fretless Bass has a maple body with lavishly flamed top that combines with an innovative neck design and pickup system for stunning sound, playability and visuals.

Many other woods are used for bass bodies. High-end models may be made of exotic species such as bubinga, wenge, koa, or cocobolo.

Choosing the right cut

Be aware that many of the cheaper cuts deliver the best flavours. Longer cooking breaks down the denser fibres creating tender meat in a thicker delicious sauce or gravy.

During the animals life different parts of the body will develop in different ways depending on the amount of work they do.This means that individual cuts will have differing proportions of muscle, fat and connective tissues. For example those that have worked the hardest such as (the neck which is constantly moving about as the animal grazes) will build up more fibre and sinew.

Cuts of Lamb Guide: descriptions and recommended cooking methods

Shoulder of Lamb

Lamb shoulder is usually sold whole or halved on the bone. This part of the animal has worked hard so is better for slow roasting to break down any fibres to be really tender, Shoulder is also sold boned and rolled for roasting or diced for casseroles, curries or stewing. Minced lamb is also taken from this section of the animal.  Best End Of Lamb Neck (Best End), Rack of Lamb  Lamb Cutlets

Lamb Chump

At the lower back of the animal where the loin meets the leg is known as the Chump. From here you can get Chump Chops and Chump Steaks. As a whole piece off the bone this is called a Chump Joint. All these are good for grilling and BBQ but can also be delicious if baked slowly in the oven.

The Breast Care Kit

There are three things I recommend to apply directly to your nipples:

Earth Mama Angel Baby nipple butter: this is an olive oil-based cream that is much less  viscous than a lanolin-based cream. Applying thick, honey-like lanolin to sore nipples can, in and of itself, be painful. Use this instead.

Neosporin: If there are open sores on your nipples, you can apply Neosporin to help them heal quickly. My lactation consultant said you can use a little bit without having to wash it off before nursing (why does it matter? Because washing your nipples hurts). If that freaks you out, consult your pediatrician. It works well, trust me!

Nursing Pillows

In my experience, newbie nursing moms will benefit greatly from a nursing pillow. A newborn can conceivably spend four hours a day on the boob (pardon?), so it behooves you to get comfy.

There are five pillows that mommies love (in order of price) ~

This is also (perhaps) the only pillow of the group that will work for laid back nursing.

The best-selling Boppy is a thicker, horseshoe-shaped pillow that you simply place around your waist. No buckling necessary with this one either.

The Boppy is a multi-use pillow; your baby can hang out in it on the floor or on your bed (not for sleeping!). Baby can also use it for tummy time. Heck, I even used mine as a sleeping pillow.

The My Brest Friend is essentially more like a nursing shelf. It wraps around your whole body and buckles on the side, which makes it very secure.

They also make one especially for twins. My lord, you could land an F-1on this thing!!

Nursing Covers

A favorite is the Bebe Au Lait Nursing Cover, which comes in many different colors/patterns. The Jennifer Jane Nursing Cover is also a good one: it offers great coverage and is comfortable. It even comes with a stow bag.

At a higher price point, the Dria Nursing Cover/Pouch works well for larger-breasted and plus sized mamas (it goes over your head like a poncho for full coverage).

Rent a hospital-grade pump

This no-frills, double-electric behemoth of a commercial-grade pump is designed to be used by multiple users, so you will have to buy your own collection kit. This pump will most likely be a Medela Symphony, Lactina or Ameda Elite. (Medela no longer makes the Lactina, but it is still available at some hospitals.)

Hospital-grade pumps are omnipresent inside NICUs

More likely, if you plan on breastfeeding and know it, it’s worth it to just get your own double-electric pump through your insurance company, if this is an option for you. This brings us to option two:

Get an electric pump through your insurance company

Newer on the scene is the Spectra (the Sand S2). We’ve watched this brand closely and have been very impressed. Dethroning the Medela was no easy feat, and Spectra is continuing to convert many former loyal Medela devotees.

The S(pink, below) is a double/single pump and the S(blue, at bottom) is the same, but it comes with a built-in rechargeable battery. Other than color, this battery feature is the ONLY difference between the Sand the S2; there is a car adapter for the Sthat is available for purchase separately.

Freemie discretion

Hands-free pumping with other pumps is a complicated, gear-intensive affair that involves wearing a special pumping bra, then attaching the shields to the bra, all while looking like something out of an Austin Powers movie. It is NOT something you could do discreetly, much less while holding a baby.

Inspired by the lag between breast pumps and 21st century technology, some new companies are coming out with totally fresh designs – not all of them have even been released yet, so we’re going to be keeping an eye out for these products in the upcoming months! (Here’s a cool article explaining the origins of these new products.)

Babyation – The Babyation is marketed as a super-quiet, super-discreet pump. Instead of attaching collection bottles to your breasts, this pump allows for easy use under a shirt because the collection bottles are distanced from your breasts. Sounds pretty great.

Pumping Bras

You can pump both breasts at once, hands-free, without having to sit there and hold the horns on your breasts. Yes, many a working mum (pretending to be English) is sitting up in her office (or lactation room) wearing this bra as we speak.

Milk Storage

This is the 6/6/rule. Cool huh? Six hours, six days, six months.

How do you store it, you ask? You can store your milk in bags or containers, like in the AVENT Via container set. Most pump makers also produce storage bags that you can pump directly into. Sadly, the Medela bags rate very poorly, so I would instead recommend Lansinoh storage bags.

Scratching Post and Toys

All cats love a good scratch, so to avoid them having to do it on your expensive sofa or stylish carpets, invest in a scratching post. They aren’t expensive but do make sure to invest in a sturdy structure as your kitten is likely to attack it on a very frequent basis. Alongside a scratching post, kittens are very playful so make sure you have plenty of toys around the house to keep them entertained.
