Pellets Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy pellets, right? No!

How they work

Central to all pellet cookers is a digital controller similar to the controllers on modern indoor ovens. You select a temp you want, and there is an LED display that tells you the actual temp. Some of the controllers also are programmable so you can cook at a certain temp for a determined time. Some have leave-in meat probes that can dial back the ovento a holding temp when the meat hits its mark.

Pellet cookers usually have an auger or another feed mechanism that pushes the pellets into a burn pot typically about the size of a beer can ripped in half. An igniter rod sits in the bottom of the pot and when you turn on the grill it glows like the element on an electric stove. As the pellets ignite, a fan blows to feed them oxygen, and the igniter shuts off. The Traeger L’il Tex, an inexpensive model, draws 300 watts an hour while the igniter rod is on in the first four minutes, then it drops down to 50 watts an hour for the duration of the cook session, less than a standard light bulb.

Because the burn pot is small, there is usually a hot spot directly over it. Some units have an optional perforated section above the burn pot so you can put the meat over direct flame, but the ones I’ve tested still do not sear properly. And there is no way to set up a 2-zone cooking system with a cool zone. As with most other grills and smokers, the differences between lower and upper racks is not huge, so think of it as one heckuva indirect heat convection smoker with precision temperature control.

On the better models, a temperature probe in the oven area tells the controller what the temperature is and if it is below the target it tells the controller to feed more pellets and air. The best manufacturers, like MAK and Memphis, have designed their own versatile custom controllers that are easy to use and can hold a temperature within 5°F, tighter than many indoor ovens.

The MAK Pellet Boss will increase or decrease with the press of a button in 5°F increments and has a probe in the oven that keeps the temp pretty solid. As with any thermostatically controlled oven, even your indoor oven, the thermostat cycles heat on or off as needed. So it you set it for 225°F it cycles on til it hits 225°F, then off until it drops to 220°F, then on to 225°F. There are three meat probes and the Boss can be programmed to change the cooker temp when the meat hits a target. I’ve had one for several years outdoors in the Chicago winters and summers without a cover and no problems.

You may need an extension cord and not any cord will do. Read this article to calculate the size and capacity of the cord you will need.

Beware of the LMH controllers

Some cheaper models, such as the Brinkmann, have a controller with only three settings, Low, Medium, High (LMH), and there is no temperature probe in the oven to create a feedback loop. We do not recommend these units. You actually have less control over temp than you do on a gas or charcoal smoker. The whole reason to buy a pellet grill is because it is set-it-forget-it and it hits a temp and holds it regardless of the ambient air temp outside, winter or summer. On these LMH controllers, the temp fluctuates widely and it cannot correct itself for the weather. They just aren’t as smart as a digital device. Whether you’re smoking a few slabs of ribs on a scorching summer day, or six pork butts during a blizzard, the three position controller only knows auger on and off times for Low, Medium, and High. It has no information on the temperature inside the cook chamber.

The good news is that if you are stuck with one of these dogs, Ortech makes a controller that can be used to upgrade Brinkmann and Traeger controllers. If you own another brand and are interested in upgrading to a digital controller, contact the manufacturer of your smoker or Ortech.

A few words of caution

Before you buy, remember, pellet smokers need access to electricity. Maintenance is also an issue. There are moving parts on these grills. Moving parts eventually break. There is an auger with a motor, and a fan with a motor. There are proprietary electronics systems on these babies. Augers clog. Motors burn out. Electronics have bugs or fail. Especially when exposed to rain, snow, hot, and cold. When they fail, will the manufacturer have a replacement part?

In 200there were only two consumer pellet grill manufacturers. Today there are more than a dozen. The market for these relatively expensive devices is small but growing fast. Not all of these small manufacturers will survive. Forget the warranty and ask “When it breaks will the manufacturer still be in business?” They do not have repair shops near you. When it breaks will they be able to diagnose the problem over the phone? They may be able to figure it out, but then you have to buy the replacement parts and do the repair work yourself. Are you up to the task?

Extension cords

The built-in cords on outdoor cooking devices are often not long enough, and although regular household extension cords will work for rotisserie kits, they will not carry enough juice to keep you pellet smoker or electric smoker going. They could become a fire hazard as they heat up trying to deliver power to the unit. To extend the cord you need a large capacity cable as measured in amps. Here’s how to figure out what you need:

Watts ÷ Voltage = Amps

If your smoker needs 500 watts, and typical household voltage is 1to 120 volts,

500 ÷ 1= 4.5, so you need a cable that has a capacity of 4.amps.

For home models, get at least a amp, 1gauge, three prong cord (oddly, 1gauge is higher capacity than 1gauge). That’s more than you need, but better safe than sorry. Commercial models may have different requirements.

The best solution: Have an electrician custom make a cord the proper length for you. Don’t buy a cable much longer than you need it because the longer the cable, the higher the resistance and the power diminishes. You don’t want to see the equations for that.

Temperature controls and range

This is a very important feature that should not be overlooked. You need to buy a unit that gives you full control of temperature, heat as well as smoke. When it comes to pellet smokers, the temperature range is as important as the temperature control. So before you purchase a new unit check the LMH controller and ensure that they have a wide range of settings.

Power Output

First measure the size of your room. Take measurement of the length, width and height. Then get its measurement in square foot size.

That determines the heating output that you need for your space. Read the specification on the pellet stove description to find out its heat output and its square feet size.

If you have a 2500 square foot room, then you need a pellet stove that gives out a 50, 000 btu of heat.

Pellet stoves need maintenance for them to stay long and deliver that kind of heat every single day. You will need to get rid of ash every day. Most pellet stove come with an ash pan that makes this job easy for you. Removing ashes saves you the frustration of having a clogged heater

Ashe removal is not the only thing that you will need to do. You need to make sure that your pellet stove is services by a professional after every six months.

Heat output

Both of these heating solutions are excellent when it comes to heat output. There is no way I can compare them to electric heaters.

A standard pellet stove can ignite 8,000 to 90,000 BTU per hour. While the gas fireplace gives out 8,500 to 100,000 BTU per hour. However the most popular gas fireplace give out 20,000 to 60,000.

The question is how efficiency is this heat? Pellet stoves are more accurate in their heat output compared to gas fireplace. However, that does not mean there have no efficiency. When it comes to heat, you won’t be disappointment with the pellet stoves.

Burning duration

A typical gas fireplace is capable of running from 4hours to hours before the tank empties up. While a pellet stoves can run from 1hours to 70 hours non-stop before the next refill. That adds an extra convenience if you are going to stay during the night. Or if your decide to hold a party in your house. It is like a bonfire it burns nonstop.

Cost and run expense

Every day you have to remove the ashes from ash drawer and it is a must if you want to keep your stove long. After every months, you will need to have a professional inspect the working conditions of the gas fireplace or pellet stoves.

When it comes to the initial cost of purchase, a pellet stove is more expense compared to gel fireplace. You also have to replace the pellets twice or once a week depending on your usage. These little cost can pile up quickly at the end of the months when you run your expenses.

In case of power outages, you can use gas fireplace. a pellet stoves won’t work in case power outages although it doesn’t use electricity as a source of fuel. However, things like a hopper may need electricity to function properly.

Both of them are dangerous and safety must be exercised at all times. However, there is a certain degree of safety when it comes to owning a pellet stove.

Gas especially propane or natural gas can be dangerous when they leak out. Any time before you light it, you must exercise caution.

However, pellets are a safe compared to gas fireplace. There is one thing that you must do. You must make sure that children and pet stay away with it, especially if you bottom hopper on a stove. It can burn them.

From this comparison I hope you learned the difference between a gas fireplace and a pellet stove. And it can help you make a wise decision in your purchase.

Electric power

With a wooden stove, you only need a wood as the main source of fuel. In case of power outages, you can still enjoy the heat generated from the wooden stoves.

That is not possible with a pellet stove. You need to have electricity that powers the blower and auger. In case of power outages, you may be disadvantages.

Modern wooden stove are bound by strict regulation. You may need to check the local code before buying a wooden stove.

With a wooden stove you need enough clearance and enough ventilation to avoid the risk harmful gases.

Pellet stoves don’t emit smoke like wooden stoves and they are environment friendly with little restrictions.

Wooden stove produce large flames, because of that they give out sparks of light. If any sparks of fire get on your carpets, it can start fire any time.

Pellet stoves have a glass door where you can view the fire. There is zero risks of sparks coming out of the stove. For that reason, they are safer compared to gas wooden stove.

Temperature range

Temperature range is an important feature. What you’ll need will depend on what kind of cooking you want to do. Most pellet grills can hit temperatures between 180 F and 42F, an adequate range for smoking, baking, roasting, and grilling. If you like to sear your meat you need something that reaches the 500-550 F. A good thermometer is a must. You’ll need to have an accurate reading so you’ll know you’re cooking your meat at the right temperature

Features and capabilities

Some people think simple is best and some love a smoker grill that comes with all the bells and whistles on the market. If you are someone who likes to have all the latest features have a look out for a smoker grill that has some of the extras below:

Throughout the years, we have had many adventures, while building our expertise in barbecuing and smoking. Our research also involves reading reviews and getting opinions from the renowned BBQ experts. We will go anywhere and be doing anything to bring you the newest and best information on smoker grills.

I can guarantee you, if a friend or family member has a smoker grill we’ve been there trying it out and getting their opinion on how it works. If the units are portable enough, we’ve been known to bring them to our place, where we personally smoke a brisket or grill a pork butt to get the first-hand experience. Let me share with you an experience I had doing exactly that.

My cousin and I went on a rowing trip at Tonto national forest, Arizona. He got a feet boat. Not much room for gear, but I insisted he take his grill along. Traeger BBQ 155.0Bronze Tailgater Pellet Grill w/EZ-Fold Legs& Digit Thermostat is small enough to fit into that small boat along with us. He was scared his smoker might get tipped into the lake, but that first night that we set it up and smoked a whole brisket he knew it was worth the extra weight. This is the length Grills Forever will go to test all the best smoker grills in every place we can think of so you don’t have to.

Every single review we’ve made so far is from a first-hand experience. So, you can trust that our reviews will be the real deal. If we fall in love with a smoker grill, we can’t wait to tell everyone about it. If we find a grill falls short, then we will warn you about that too.

We are not affiliated with any particular brand. Our independence allows you to trust what we say so you can use the information we give you to buy your smoker grill with confidence.

Temperature control

As we’ve already said temperature control is the key to getting a moist succulent piece of meat. This pellet smoker comes with a built-in thermostatic control with a digital thermometer, so you can exclude any guesswork while barbecuing. If the temperature sensors detect a drop-in temperature they feed more wood pellets into the burner. This allows you to place your meat on the grill and then let the smoker do the work while you relax.

If that wasn’t enough, it features an electric dual ignition switch plus dual temperature LED displays to show you the cooking temperature at a glance.

Digital control

Camp Chef PG2Pellet Grill has an amazing digital controller. You simply have to set your preferred cooking temperature and the heat in the chamber will be automatically adjusted.

With this unit, meat can be smoked at a temperature of 150F for hours. You can also set the temperature to 500F for a searing and grilling. The heat is evenly spread using convection, thus removing cold and hot spots on the grill.

Meat Probe

With a temperature probe for the meat inside the chamber, this allows you to keep an eye on the temperature of your meat without opening the grill. Nothing ruins a brisket or roast faster than the grill who constantly fiddles with the meat on the grill. Opening the chamber lets the heat out and that can quickly make for some tough meat. This handy feature takes the guesswork out of how ready your meal is.

Camp Chef PG2has a compact weight of 12pounds and a pellet hopper with a 20-pound capacity. That’s large enough that you don’t have to worry about getting more before your meal is done. This set it and forget approach to cooking gives you the ultimate cooking experience. Each time the temperature drops down, a wood pellet is dispensed. This convenience is impossible to find in a gas, wood or charcoal unit.

With this unit, not even a single pellet goes to waste. Additionally, you don’t have to worry about your pellets running out in the middle of cooking. The pellet hopper can hold up to 20 pounds of pellets and the digital thermostat control ensures that each pellet is efficiently used. Thus, it helps save a lot of money and allows you to smoke your food for a long time without refilling the pellets.

What to Look Forward to

The zest for barbequing is growing every year with more and more BBQ lovers venturing into the mystery of the myth-laden empire of smoking. We have spent years encouraging the outdoor cooking buffs to embrace pellet smokers, and until now, our efforts have brought about fruitful results. As new manufacturers are getting into the market to cater to the growing need for pellet smokers and they are coming up with unique features to help them stand out from their competitors. This is a great advantage for the users, since the competition is pushing for more innovation into the barbecuing industry. Many new developments are underway and soon will be released in the market. However, some are already with us! So here are some of the biggest things to look forward to while buying your next pellet smoker.

Wi-Fi control – Pellet grills use electronic circuit boards, which means they can feature a lot more functionalities to facilitate the outdoor experience. Wi-Fi control is already being included in pellet grills, such as in the Green Mountain Grill and Davy Crockett Pellet Grill.

PID Controller – Proportional Integral Derivative Controller is a recent technology that many manufacturers have yet to include in their products. It helps the smoker maintain an accurate and precise temperature while cooking.

Mak Grills

Mak Grills is a great grill. I once saw one in Las Vegas with a team that competed at The Rib Throwdown at the ACM Country Music Awards.  Mak is a top of the line Pellet Smoker that has proven itself over and over again.

Mak is the only other company that has the insulated cookers like Royall.

Mak has a great pellet smoker. The quailty is there. Buy a Mak Grill.

These pellet smokers grills in the description I would recommend and give the BBQSuperStars Guarantee on. None of the others.  Pellet Grills can break down.  The auger that brings the pellets in, the eye that burns the wood.  The temperature probe in the cooker and get knocked off or damaged by the exchange of BBQ in and out of the grill.  These four listed above have less problems. Cook Shack is the best ever made, Royall and Yoder are even in a clear second.  When buying a pellet cooker avoid those countries that build in China.  Do your homework even on the grills listed.  China made pellet grills have a lot of problems.

It can shoot up to 800 FPS with lead ammunition and 950 FPS with alloy ammunition. With 20 FPE, this is an airgun that can take down small game and pests with ease. This air rifle is a bit pricier, but offer multi-use options, it is definitely worth the extra cost. What You Should Look For In an Air Rifle

Be sure to read the reviews that are left by current and former customers. This will give you an idea of how well the air gun performed and stood up to the test of time for the specific gunner. Stay clear of brands that hold a low rating because they are most likely not worth their price tag.

Powerful Options

If you are looking for an air gun that is powerful enough to take out small or medium game, you will require a break barrel or pneumatic rifle. Of course, it is not always necessary to utilize a high-powered or magnum-powered air rifle, if you are not planning on shooting from long distances. The COair rifle may be sufficient, if you are shooting from 20 yard distances. Most hunters like to sneak upon their prey and get up close, before they aim and take their shot. This will allow them the opportunity to improve their chances of hitting their target.

While there are many different styles of air guns, it is important to remember that they all offer different distance. Still, it is really the accuracy that plays a huge factor, when you are hunting. However, if you are interested in long distance kills, you might want to consider a PCP (Pre-Charged Pneumatic), since rifles with this mechanism will shoot accurately for up to 60 yards.

Here’s the real deal.

Additionally, the unit is EPA-certified and provides an 85-percent efficiency rating, meaning you won’t have to worry about the loss of heat transfer or polluting the environment.

We really liked the option to set the unit to minimum or maximum settings in addition to intermediate settings via Pleasant Hearth’s Comfort Control System. This gave us the option to really blast away the chill or keep things nice and toasty when things weren’t so cold outside.

Listen to this

Castle pellet stoves come with a smart controller, but compared to other options, the thermal efficiency doesn’t really add up. These stoves are good for smaller homes and dwellings that don’t receive very cold temperatures during the winter.

The ability to heat up to 1,500 square feet is nice for those who need it, but if you’re in a larger home and you demand efficiency, you’re likely going to need to consider other options. We did, however, like that this unit was EPA-certified and good for the environment.

Here’s what you need to know.

The Pelpro 50,000 BTU stove is a beast, providing tons of heat and offering a whopping 130-pound hopper. This means that you can load in over four normal bags of pellets and just let the unit run.

On top of that, due to its large capacity and high BTU output, the Pelpro can comfortably heat 2,200 square heat of space without a problem. If you have a large home with multiple levels, this unit can definitely handle the challenge.

Modern Pellet Stoves – Your Comprehensive Guide (2018) back to menu ↑

How We Tested

Because pellet stoves require a constant amount of fuel, we decided to ensure quality and consistency in our reviews by using the same pellets. This was also done in order to ensure safety across the variety of stoves that we tested.

Please be advised that fuel pellets can vary in material by manufacturer and we always encourage you to make sure that the pellets you are using are compatible with your particular stove to avoid fires and injuries.

In order to measure temperature changes, which were the simplest measurement, we first took an indoor temperature using a digital thermometer. This thermometer was then used to measure heat changes as each stove was heating up and as each stove reached the temperature set on each stove’s thermostat.

We went the extra mile

Additionally, we made sure that each testing room was given a full day in between tests so that the room’s temperature could return to normal. This was done to prevent temperature contamination from the previous test.

Testing the efficiency of each stove, however, was a little bit more complicated. Without access to very expensive monitoring tools, we relied on equations to get an estimate of each model’s efficiency.

This was done by measuring the cost of the pellets used in each test against the time it took for each room to reach the temperature set on the thermostat. Additionally, we had to take into account outdoor temperatures, the size of the room, the room’s insulation and any window draft.

Without going into specifics, which would honestly be pretty boring, we were able, in most cases, to match the efficiency as provided by the manufacturer of each unit.

Care and Maintenance

Pellet stoves are typically low maintenance, but that doesn’t mean that you can ignore your unit. Cleaning out the ash left behind after consecutive use is important, both for safety purposes and for cleanliness. If too much ash builds up, it may cause a fire hazard.

Likewise, too much ash means some could spill out onto the floor once the door of the burning chamber is opened.

In order to clean out the ash, you could use a small hand brush, but a more efficient way to take care of the cleaning is to use a vacuum. A small ash vacuum makes the cleaning process a breeze by reducing the time needed to clean while reducing the potential for a mess.

Additionally, an ash vacuum will reduce the potential for ash particles to be thrown into the air where you or others may breathe them in.

In some circumstances, such as using the wrong pellets, the auger may not be able to properly churn out the right amount of fuel. When this happen, the risk of fire increases as the unit is warming up and receiving air without the fuel to burn off.

Likewise, if an air duct gets clogged within the unit, you may not experience proper heat. This may lead to the auger providing more pellets, and thus, you end up wasting fuel. If you ever hear any strange noises coming from your stove, or if you notice a sudden lack of heat or flame, turn the unit off and contact a repair professional in order to avoid damage to the unit or to yourself.

Listen to this!

Never try to lift a heavy pellet stove on your own. This goes for both installing and moving. Most units weigh hundreds of pounds and can lead to severe injuries.

Everything from sprains and strains to broken bones if a unit falls on you can be hazards that can occur when trying to move a stove on your own.

Only use approved pellets for your specific stove. Most pellet stoves use standard sizes and compositions of pellets, but to be on the safe side, only use the pellets recommended by your unit’s manufacturer.

Using improper pellets could lead to feeding issues from the hopper, potentially leading to a fire and damage to your stove. If you use the wrong pellets, even if they seem to be burning properly, you might be throwing away money because the unit isn’t operating as efficiently as it could be.

Camp Chef PG24DLX Deluxe

Definitely the number one for me. Plenty of built-in features that are there to make the cooking process easier plus a big cooking surface. It’s a smoker that will give your food a really great smoked flavor.

The manufacturers of this pellet smoker certainly did a lot of work when designing this model, it was made with care and a lot of thought.

The advantages of this pellet smoker allow to put it first on my list.  It’s a smoker that is medium tier in terms of price. It is not too expensive, and it’s not one of the cheapest ones, either. Still, it has plenty of solutions that allow it to stand out as number one among dozens of other pellet smokers.

The cooking surface – is big considering the price of this pellet smoker. 42square inches of the main cooking surface and 14square inches of the rack. It is definitely enough for a big family or for a bigger party. It also comes with an extra heated rack that you can remove at any time.

The most important thing, which is temperature control. You have to pay attention to that if you want your food to be well made. A smoker that is characterized with lack of temperature control will lead to your food getting burned or the temperature will be so low that it won’t be properly cooked.

Digital control panel – Elaborate and all-embracing panel allows for a great temperature control. Set the desired temperature for yourself and the smoker will automatically supply pellets to the grill in order to maintain the temperature you set. The regulation range is 160 degrees F all the way to 500 degrees F.

Also, the digital display will allow you to check the meat internal temperature using the meat probe that comes with this grill. It’s a great solution, and why? Because you can check the meat’s temperature without opening the grill lid. You probably know well that feeling when you open the lid to check the temperature inside the meat.

By opening the lid you cause the heat to quickly escape. Remember that the most important thing is to always maintain a fixed temperature inside the grill. With this solution, you can easily control the meat’s temperature without losing the heat inside the grill.

It is certainly your requirement for the smoker to be automated. That is the case with Camp Chef PG24DLX Deluxe. It’s a smoker that thanks to its very good temperature control doesn’t require you to check if the temperature inside the grill is really okay. That way it allows for stress-free long meat smoking at a fixed low temperature.

Another great solution is the ash removal system – it’s a patented solution that you won’t find in any other grill. Under the grill you’ll find a cup where the ash from your pellets goes to. All you have to do is twist it off, throw out the ash and put it back in its place. Easy, quick, efficient and effective.

On top of that, the construction is designed in a way that makes all the fat and grease drip to the bucket on the side. That way you can quickly and easily replace the bucket with a new one or quickly clean the old bucket.

I can honestly admit I hate cleaning, I think most people feel the same. You have to know, though, that keeping your pellet smoker clean is a very important task. People who designed this grill handled this task perfectly, making cleaning a much easier and quicker task.

It’s an automated grill with features mostly found in much more expensive models. Everything I described above allows me to easily say that this is the best pellet smoker. This grill keep a great price to quality, efficiency and functionality ratio.

As you can see, you can buy a great pellet smoker at medium price that is really well constructed and contains plenty of interesting features.

The construction is well thought-out and was made in a way that makes it easy for the user in terms of using and cleaning. It is definitely a model that will serve you for many years.

It is great at maintaining temperature, has a great cooking space and is very easy to clean.

Taking all the factors into account, I definitely recommend this pellet smoker, it has a very good quality to price ratio. If you’re not a professional meat smoker, this is definitely a great choice for you at a decent price.

Green Mountain Grills Davy Crockett

This time it’s a suggestion to those who need to bring the pellet smoker along when going out camping. Small portable pellet grill, equipped with plenty of useful features. You can easily put it in the car with you, as it has foldable legs and is lightweight.

The cooking surface is 21square inches. That’s a good number for a portable pellet smoker.

Pellet hopper holds 1lbs of pellets. Of course it also has a fat container, a stainless steel bucket, which is standard in every grill.

This pellet smoker is equipped with a PID controller, which means that the temperature control in this grill is very good. It can be controlled manually or using an app on your phone.

The panel allows to set the temperature at 150-500 F degrees at F degree intervals. It guarantees that the temperature won’t rise or drop by dozens of degrees, making your cooking more complicated that way. The PID controller makes sure that the selected temperature is maintained, and it really does a good job with that.

Remember that the most important thing in those pellet grills is to maintain a fixed temperature. It’s a necessary condition for peaceful cooking. Such grill will easily let you smoke meat for many hours without the risk of burning it in an uncontrolled too high temperature.

The app allows to create profiles. That way you can set it so that your meat smokes at lower temperatures for the first 2-hours, then you can set it so that it smokes at higher temperature for the next hours.

PID controller – High control of temperature app’s problems with WI-FI

Camp Chef Smokepro STX

It’s a grill that doesn’t differ much from the PG2DLX version. The main difference is lack of the side shelf, which results in lower price and a little less features.

If you don’t need the side shelf, I recommend buying this version of a pellet grill. That way you will save some money buying a relatively cheap pellet smoker that is very good end efficient.

Great pellet grill for this price. It will certainly be able to do the same thing as the twice as expensive Treager.

Of course it has a digital multi-position controller that allows to set the temperature within a 160 degrees F to 500 degrees F range.

It has features such as Ash cleanout system and Grease management system. These systems are there to make the process of cleaning your pellet grill easier and faster.

Comes with a Meat Probe. You can easily monitor the internal temperature of the meat using the digital controller, without having to lift the grill’s lid. That way you don’t risk losing the heat when opening the lid of the grill.

Different Uses for Your Gun

Many different types of air guns can be used for competition. Popular events include the Olympic 10m Air Rifle and m Air Pistol competitions. These competitions set their own rules for what kinds of guns can be used, as well as what kind of ammunition. Wherever possible, it is advisable to choose a gun with greater accuracy, such as a single-stroke, PCP or COpowered air gun. The National Rifle Association also hosts a competition for BB gun shooting, and even some Airsoft gun competitions are held.

For plinking, or general recreational target shooting, it is not as important to have an accurate gun or one with great power. If you are shooting just to shoot, choose a gun that feels good in your arms and that is easy to handle. However, if you want to practice your precision shooting, practice with a gun that allows for greater accuracy and easy of use.

Legal Concerns Regarding Air Rifles

In some cases, you can buy a pellet gun or Airsoft gun so long as you are 1years old. However, each jurisdiction regulates these guns differently, and you may face different rules at the state or even the city level. In some cases, you may have to pass a background check, just as you would for a handgun. You may even be required to get a permit before you can buy the gun or the ammunition.

Most Popular Air Rifle Brands

Benjamin air guns are a special line produced by the Crosman company, and they are known for their classic designs, high power and accuracy. Benjamin rifles are ideal for hunters, even including scopes for greater accuracy. A variety of power systems are available, including PCP and CO2, as well as a variety of caliber types. You can find the gun you need for the game you prefer.

The three main types of propulsion methods that are seen in today’s quality air rifle market today are COpowered, spring piston, and pre-charged pneumatic. The older, less reliable “pump up” pneumatic rifles that many people are familiar with from their youth can still be found, but are generally considered much less powerful than the other three methods.

CORifles, such as the Hammerli 850 Air Magnum, require no cocking effort.

CORifles come in a wide variety of different shapes and sizes, but the one thing that they all share is that COcapsules or canisters power them. The most common type of COon the market is the 12-gram cartridge, although other sizes are also on the market, such as 88-gram COcartridges.

The main advantages of COpowered guns are that they are very quiet, very easy to use, they are available in a variety of different shapes/sizes, and there is no cocking effort, or force that has to be applied between shots.

One thing to note about COpowered air rifles is the difference in COpressure tanks that can occur with changes in temperature. Also, quickly repeated shots can decrease the total amount of rounds that can be fired with the use of a single COcanister, so spacing shots (even by a second or two), instead of rapidly firing can increase the total amount of shots from a single canister.

When it comes to COrifles, the Hammerli 850 AirMagnum provides a uniform, rapid rate of fire, while the Beretta CxStorm provides a tactical look.

Spring Piston

Break barrel spring piston air rifles, like the RWS Model 34, have high velocities and are very accurate.

Spring piston air rifles are the most common air guns used by adults. They utilize a hefty spring and air piston to propel a pellet down range. For each shot the spring is retracted, and when fired, the spring pushes the piston forward, propelling a charge of air into the barrel of the gun. While the spring piston is the propulsion method, there are several types of cocking mechanisms, such as barrel-cocking, side-cocking and under-lever. The most common type is the break barrel gun. Extremely high velocities and accuracy are attainable with spring piston rifles, and their versatility makes them very popular amongst all shooting styles.

Pre-Charged Pneumatic

Pre-charged pneumatics use a large air reservoir of extremely high pressure air, which results in many shots before a recharge is required. Often abbreviated “PCP” for short, recharging of the tank is done with either a high-pressure hand pump or a SCUBA tank with proper adapters. Pre-charged pneumatics are the most powerful types of airguns that are made, and are generally among the most accurate air rifles that are available to be purchased. As a consequence of being the most powerful, most accurate, and made from the highest quality parts and craftsmanship, pre-charged pneumatics are often among the more expensive air rifles to own.

Due to their many advantages, pre-charged pneumatics are among the most sought after guns for the most serious shooters. One example is the the Walther 1250 Dominator comes with an 8-shot rotary pellet magazine and is available with a scope and tripod for increased accuracy.

After intended use and propulsion methods are explored, you should then consider which caliber air rifle is best for the individual user.

Another important matter to consider is how you want to use the pellet stove. Do you intend to use it as a primary source of heating, or do you intend to use it as a supplemental space heater? The answer to this question can be crucial in deciding how to use the pellet stove properly, and how much you should spend on running it.
