Postcards Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy postcards, right? No!

Condition

One of the first things an appraiser or collector will notice about your postcard is its condition. Cards in fine shape, with no discoloration, foxing, tears, or other damage fetch the highest prices. Some cards had flocking, glitter or gilding, and those sections of the card need to have as much of the original material as possible.

A card which looks perfect could be a reproduction, so be careful when buying. Damaged cards bring less money or can make the card nearly worthless.

Determining age is not easy, even if a card has a date printed on it. Many cards were sold for years after their printing, and the postmark date shows only when something was mailed, not when it was made. Guidebooks to purchasing postcards are excellent resources for identifying age.

As with all antique items, rarity brings up the value of postcards. If only a few of the cards were printed or only a small number have survived the ages, your card may be very valuable. However, rarity goes hand-in-hand with other characteristics; if only a single card was printed, that makes it rare. But if the topic is uninteresting, or the postcard is newer, then rarity doesn’t really matter because it may be the only one, but no one wants it.

Vintage Halloween Postcard

Subject matter of the card is another very significant factor in determining its value. Cards that feature iconic moments in history or come from long-gone places offer a glimpse into the past. Collectors will pay top dollar for certain subjects, such as vintage ocean liners, and these cards may fetch more money at auction.

Professional Appraisal

If you suspect your card or your postcard collection carries a lot of value, it’s always a good idea to have it professionally appraised. If you’ll be selling the postcard, this will help you get a fair price. If you’ll be keeping it, you’ll know how to list it on your insurance.

A Glimpse Into the Past

Five postcard apps tested

In this age of sharing images via email, social media and text messages, one form of photo communication has sadly been left behind. It is something we all used to look forward to getting from anyone who was traveling. I’m speaking of the humble postcard.

Putting them to the test

I tried out five different postcard apps on an iPhone 5s: Touchnote, Postcard, Ink, Postagram and Snapshot Postcard. All of the apps are free and charge only for sending cards. I sent myself three postcards from each app using the same three images. One of the images was taken with a DSLR and another with a Micro Four Thirds camera, then transferred to my iPhone. The third image was a photo taken with the iPhone’s rear-facing camera. The data regarding pricing was reported by the app companies themselves. I did my best to make it clear what the costs would be for both US and International users. If the company reported specific non-US pricing, it is listed. But if they did not, pricing will be in whatever your local exchange rate is from USD.

Words From The Owner

We would need to see a list of the highlights of your collection. Spend about 1-hours preparing a list. After reviewing the list I will have many questions but this will provide me with a good start. If we can come to an agreement on price, I can then advise on shipping methods or I could possibly come to you to pick up the collection if the dollar value warranted so. If you have a list already just forward what you have and that will help get the ball rolling. Thank You!

The Good

Postcardly Postcards lets you use your own photos to send physical snail mail postcards to friends and family. The process is easy, and the results are great.

The Bad During the move and scale phase of the process, the orientation of the photo can be confusing.

Measure the results.

You should measure immediate results, as well as results over time of your postcard campaign. Within days of receiving an effective postcard, some people will respond. You may get e-mails, registrations on your Web site, requests for information, or an offered service, depending on what action you request. You may simply get a personal acknowledgement. Best of all, you may get requests to discuss selling or buying.

Each week and month, effective postcards can generate additional initial appointments. Each quarter and each year, they create additional listings and sales.

So every morning, take five minutes to record results, initial appointments, listings, and sales—noting the sources of each. Notice what postcard and what specific part of the postcard generated the results. Then, repeat postcard elements that generate the best responses; eliminate the elements that don’t.

Also, measure return on your investment. Effective postcard campaigns return a minimum of four times the cost. More often, the return is eight to 1times the cost.

Tips for selling your trading cards and sports cards

These tips will help you get the highest value out of your trading cards while also making the selling process as smooth as possible.

When selling cards individually, make sure to include the card’s set, number, and rarity.

Place each individually sold card in a penny sleeve to protect it from damage.

Check recently completed listings to see what others are willing to pay for your card.

When selling cards in a group, separate them by type and include the number of each different type of cards (e.g. “This set contains energy cards, 1Pokémon, and trainer cards.”)

Consider having your most valuable cards graded. The difference between a pristine card and an average card can sometimes be worth thousands!

When using a top loaded sleeve with your cards, use a small piece of masking tab with a tab folded on one end. This prevents the card from slipping out, but makes it easy for the buyer to open the card’s sleeve.

When shipping a single card or a small number of cards, use a bubble mailer.

Bulk cards should be packed well in a large cardboard box with bubblewrap in the box’s corners to protect the cards from any accidental damage.

A couple of pieces of paper work great for protecting your card’s edges as well!

Alternatives to selling your trading cards and sports cards

At the end of the day though, selling your old cards is always going to be a bit of a hassle. If you don’t necessarily care about the money, consider giving the cards away to friends, family, or charity. It’s a great way to introduce someone else to the hobby, and it often doesn’t require as much effort as selling.

You can also consider trading your cards at a convention, local shop, or within a Facebook group. If you’re still an active player/collector, trading a card will get you the highest value possible. In some cases, you may even be able to trade up for something higher in value!

How the UV Printing Process Works

UV coatings are applied wet and when exposed to ultraviolet light cures in milliseconds due to a chemical reaction called chain polymerisation. Ultraviolet radiation causes acrylates to bond, forming a plastic film which protects against scuffing, scratches and fingerprints. It also adds sheen and smoothness.

Printing Tips

With the variety of UV products available, designers and marketers have great freedom to create print with stunning visuals, impactful imagery, and sensory experiences. Used individually or in combination, coatins can help produce amazing results. Not all printers have UV coating capabilities, and many that do are limited to the most basic flood coating in satin or gloss. Taking advantage of the full range of UV products requires working with an experienced UV printer that specializes in producing award winning commercial print, like The John Roberts Company.

Collector Editions and Consoles

At the top end of the gift spectrum are these special edition versions of Destiny Not only do these contain the actual game, they’re also packed with extra goodies like official artwork and collectible postcards.

If your loved one is looking to make the upgrade to the new PSPro console, we’ve also got the limited edition Destiny version of the hardware for you.

Subscriptions

To get the most out of Destiny on console, the Guardian in your life is going to need a subscription to either Xbox Live or Sony PlayStation Plus, depending on the platform they’re playing on.

It doesn’t matter if the person you’re gifting this to already has a subscription either, as they can simply top up their existing service with a new 1month plan using these codes.

Accessories

From lunchboxes to keyrings, we’ve got a selection of items perfectly suited to the Destiny player in your life.

There are three hero types in Destiny (Titan, Warlock and Hunter), so make sure you buy the right item for the person you have in mind. If Warlock’s their favourite type of character in the game, it’s well worth getting that version of the item.

Perhaps it’s in response to the looming pressure from the Shanghai and Beijing auto shows or that nonautomotive shows such as CES are starting to steal the thunder from the autorama circuit, but the Tokyo Motor Show displayed more fighting spirit this year.

Sure, the Tokyo show might not have the glitz and weirdness it did before Japan’s miracle economy burst. But for a display that has bordered on bland/conservative for a couple decades, and which was even threatened with extinction, the 201effort was a return to form.

Toyota teased a chunky off-road successor to its FJ Cruiser, Mazda unveiled a sleeker-still evolution of its kodo design language, and Nissan brought a NISMO (!) version of its Leaf EV.

Wacky concepts were in abundance. Suzuki’s E-Survivor could be Japan’s home-market answer to the Jeep Wrangler. Yamaha’s Cross Hub compact car featured a diamond seating arrangement and a cargo area large enough to stow an adult’s motocross bike. Honda revealed a sporty iteration of its compact electric vehicle, which was equal parts cute and thrilling. Mitsubishi unveiled a high-performance electric SUV that carried an Evo badge, of all things. And then there were the lozenge-shaped personal mobility vehicles, with styling straight out of Blade Runner 204Clearly, the Japanese automakers brought their A game.

But one car stood out. Likely destined for the Japanese market, the Daihatsu Compagno is on my wish list to come to America, as well.

The Compagno has serious cool factor and would be a groovy first vehicle if you lived in an urban community. Like an energetic puppy, the Compagno surges forward on its haunches, with the face of a Volvo, the side profile and roofline of an Audi A3, and a back end like something out of Pininfarina’s 196catalog. The instrument displays are digital-modern but housed in a retro framework.
