Replacement Mask Lenses Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy replacement mask lenses, right? No!

Custom Prescription Lenses

The good thing about this type is the fact that the mask lens is replaced with a piece of glass that is personalized according to your prescription. It is more expensive than the bonded lens but it proves to be the best option for people with strong prescriptions. It is also a lot lighter than the bonded prescription and provides a wide, full view of the underwater world.

Drop-In Lens

If you think that custom lenses are the best for your scuba mask, think again. With the drop-in lens, you can have your lenses easily removed and then drop in a pre-made corrected lens. Think about ease of use and trouble-free replacement of one lens to another. The good thing is that you can purchase the drop-in lens by yourself and carry out the removal and replacement on your own. Take note, however, that this will not work for you well if you have strong prescriptions or if you suffer from astigmatism. Nevertheless if you are interested in this type, ask about the bifocal options from your supplier.

There you have it, your guide to purchasing the perfect dive mask for you. Just remember that before actually buying one, you have to visit

Fit and Comfort vs. Color

The winner of this comparison is always fit and comfort. The skirt of the mask should wrap around your eye area without any gaps. Find the mask that fits you best, and then pick your color from there. To make sure you have a properly fitting mask speak to your Dive Shop representative about different techniques on finding the perfect fit. Here is one method used:

Transparent vs. Colored Silicon

This decision depends on your personal preference. A clear silicone skirt will allow for more light. A clear mask skirt is a popular option for beginning divers who like an open feeling and more peripheral vision. Opaque dark silicon is often a choice for underwater photographers because it reduces glare.

High vs. Low Volume

Mask volume refers to the amount of air space inside the mask. High volume masks offer a feeling of openness and extend peripheral vision. However, they take a little more effort to clear. Low volume or low-profile masks sit closer to your face and can be quickly cleared of water.

The mask is what protects your face and the level of protection varies mask to mask so it’s best to consider your style and level of play.

Beginner masks tend to offer full coverage along the forehead, jaw line and ear sections however this does come at the expense of added weight. These are often constructed from semi-rigid plastic that offer ultimate impact protection however are very inflexible.

Prescription lenses

If  you normally wear glasses, you can select a mask where prescription  lenses can be fitted. We stock minus, plus and bifocal lenses for several of the TUSA, Beuchat, Cressi and Atomic range of masks. Most lenses are supplied in half diopter increments.

If your prescription falls  between two lens strengths, it is recommended you select the weaker of the two as the water  itself offers some maginifcation. These lenses replace  the original glass lens in the mask and we can fit the new lenses for you.

After buying your mask, before you use it, smear toothpaste on the inside of the lenses with your fingers. Leave it on for a few minutes and then wash it off (no bicarbonate of soda or anything fancy – just standard toothpaste).

When a mask is put together in the factory, some of the silicone in the air coats the lenses. Toothpaste removes this layer of silicone and stops the lenses from fogging up as much.

Other Contenders

The market for full face snorkel masks will only get more crowded. So far none of the new contenders was able to knock the Tribord or the Seaview off of the throne. Here’s a list of other masks that are available today. Please be advised that many of these masks are not made of the same high-quality materials and/or are not as well designed. You can expect these masks to not last as long and to potentially leak at times.

Snorkel Design

The snorkels had a mouth piece that you needed to bite down to keep it in place. Even if it’s your own snorkel, that’s a rather unhygienic piece of equipment. The more important issue though is or was that you had to breathe through your mouth. The old masks and snorkel combinations did not allow for any nose breathing. Many people didn’t like to snorkel because of that as their natural instinct was to breathe through their nose.

Another problem with the old snorkels was that they didn’t keep water out when they got submerged. There’s a lot of drinks that taste better than a nice swallow of salt water. A lot of people tried to snorkel and immediately stopped this activity once they drank a mouthful of salt water and gagged under water. Not only does it taste gross, it also can lead to panic attacks for some people as they immediately fear they’d be drowning. Newer generations of snorkels are dry which means that they don’t allow water to get into the snorkel and your mouth when submerged.

The full-face masks completely took away with those snorkel and breathing problems. As they cover the whole face, they do allow to breathe through your mouth or your nose. Just as if you’d take a stroll in a park. They also are designed to be dry snorkels and will keep the water out of the snorkel and the mask if they get submerged.

Another advantage of a full-face mask is that it is overall more comfortable to wear. As it covers your whole face, the skirt is pressing all around your face. Traditional masks at time can have pressure points in the middle of your face which might make that more uncomfortable to wear. This is true especially when you snorkel for a longer time and also if you use a cheaper dive mask.

Many people, for whatever reason, think that the cheapest dive mask is good enough for snorkeling as they won’t really dive. Technically, that might be true but these cheap dive masks also don’t use the best components and materials and thus are often leaky and/or uncomfortable to wear. A full-face mask, if it’s not one of the cheap Asian knock-offs, will usually use high-quality components and materials which make it very comfortable to wear for long times.

All in one Design

Another advantage of the full-face snorkel mask over the traditional dive mask/snorkel combo is that you can’t forget the snorkel at home. You won’t believe how many people go snorkeling only to find out that they brought their dive mask but forgot their snorkel at home. They had to clean it and took it out and forgot to put it back. Just one of those things that we all tend to do at times. A full-face mask has the snorkel built-in. If you remember to grab your mask for snorkeling, you also will have your snorkel with you. This might not be an obvious advantage but experience shows that it’s one to think about!

Fog Resistance

Last but not least these kinds of masks are usually also more fog proof than traditional dive masks. As the air continuously exchanges inside the whole mask through you breathing in and out, the humidity level also stays more regulated. This reduces the chance of your mask fogging. In a traditional mask, you have the air sealed around your eyes and nose and it’s not exchanged at all during your snorkel adventure. This increases the chances of the window fogging up and you having issues seeing the beauty of the sea underneath you.

Direct your own movies

Some full-face snorkel masks also have a mount for an action camera included. Most allow to add a GoPro camera on top of the mask so you can tape the same scenery as you see it while you snorkel. This is a great feature as it allows you to continue to use your hands while filming. If you have to hold the camera in your hand then one of your hands is constantly in use holding the camera.

Keeping you afloat

Full-face masks do not only have advantages though. There’s one disadvantage and that comes from the large volume of these masks. If you snorkel and see something really interesting a few feet below you, it’s much harder to dive down with a full-face mask compared to a traditional scuba mask. Why you ask? The air trapped inside the mask creates a lift under water. This makes it much harder to dive down as the air wants to keep you afloat. Modern traditional scuba masks are designed to minimize the amount of trapped air to make it easier to dive down. The full-face mask traps a lot of air which helps you stay afloat and makes it easier to snorkel but it also makes it nearly impossible to dive with them.

Scuba Snorkel Features

A scuba snorkel is a very basic piece of equipment. However, there are now lots of features to choose from – from purge valves to rotating mouthpieces to dry or semi-dry and so on. Which of these features to you want/need on scuba snorkels?

Choosing the Best Snorkel For You Plus Our Picks For Best Snorkel and Snorkel Set

Now that you know about the features available on snorkels, what makes the best snorkel for you? We discuss all the things you should consider before buying this piece of low-tech equipment, from comfort and fit to length and diameter to everything in between. We also give you our picks for the best snorkel and snorkel set.

Frame Size

Frame size of goggles can vary depending on the size of your head and face, or what kind of style and look that you are going after. In the past few seasons large or oversized framed goggles have become increasingly popular.

Small Frame  goggles have a smaller fit by being narrower, shorter and shallower than other frame sizes. They are designed for smaller faces or for skiers who are specifically looking for a smaller goggle design. goggles have a very wide, tall and deep frame that best fit larger faces, or for skiers who are seeking that oversized goggle style. •

OTG Goggles  are designed to have a deeper, taller and wider frame to accommodate skiers who choose to wear their prescription glasses underneath their goggles. Some OTG ski goggles can have additional anti-fog devices such as an electric fan.

There are different options to accommodate the light conditions you plan on skiing in as well as the lenses that best suits how you want to see the mountain. reduce the amount a glare from the sun and snow. The less glare that you have, the less your eyes will fatigue. Polarized Lenses do not sacrifice visibility in low light conditions. •

Photocromatic Lenses  give you the most versatility out of one single lens. They can automatically lighten or darken depending on the light conditions. Photocromatic lenses offer you great visibility in all light conditions because they adjust with the exposure of UV radiation coming from the sun. The greater the sunlight, the darker the lens becomes; the less sunlight, the lighter the lens becomes. •

Mirrored Lenses  can sometimes be called Chrome lenses. Mirrored lenses are slightly or fully reflective on the outside, and the mirrored coating blocks additional sunlight in bright or very light conditions. It can also help reduce glare by reflecting more light as well as allow less light through the lens. Since they allow less light through you will have less visibility on overcast days. •

Non-Mirrored Lenses

There is a lens offered for just about every light condition. The manufacturers VLT (Visual Light Transmission) refers to how much light enters the lens.

The higher the percentage the more light goes through the lens, the lower the percentage the less light filters through the lens.

The higher the percentage the better that lens will be for overcast or cloudy days, the lower the percentage the better that lens will be on sunny days.

The lens shape that you select may have an impact on your field of vision and the clarity of your peripheral vision. •

Spherical Lens  goggles have a lens shape that matches the curvature of your eyes to give you a less distorted field of vision, more peripheral vision and a clearer sharper view. Spherical Lenses are more expensive but give you the best optics.

Lens Change

Light conditions may vary throughout the day. Sometimes light conditions can differ from one run to the next. Different lenses are created to accommodate these changing light conditions. When it comes to swapping out a lens, some frames make it easier than others.

Easy to change lenses  are easily one of the biggest innovations in goggles in recent years is having goggles that easily allow you to swap out the lenses on-the-fly. Considering how important it is for you to have the correct lens, these goggles make a great investment. These are so easy to change, it can be done in a minute while sitting on a chairlift.

Venitlation on goggles helps control the climate inside the goggle. Every brand has different features to allow air to flow through the goggle to prevent moisture from building up inside which can minimize fogging. The greater the ventilation, the less likely your goggles will fog up. •

Anti-Fog Fan  goggles have a battery operated fan that is relatively low profile designed to keep the air moving across the top of the goggles and in-between the lenses to give you the ultimate tool in combating fogging. This works great in OTG goggles and for any skier who has major problems with fogging.

Yes some goggles have a GPS located inside them that allows you to calculate your speed, check your air time and track how many vertical feet you have skied in a given duration of time.

McNett Wetsuit Shampoo

When storing your diving mask you need to make sure it is thoroughly dry and that it is stored away from sunlight. Prolonged exposure to sunlight and moisture will lead to a deterioration of the silicone of the mask skirt and strap and can help promote mold growth.

Chaz Elban

One of the most common complaints I’ve seen from both veteran snorkelers and novices is the issue with clarity of vision underwater. For people who have problems with their eyesight and use prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses, snorkeling can be an unenjoyable or even a frightening experience.

Fortunately, with the advent of the Internet, companies have been made aware of this gap in the market. A selection of snorkel masks with integrated prescription magnification are now available, which means that people with poor eyesight can attain excellent visibility beneath the waves!

The Uncut Buzz Rating

The Scuba Choice Nearsighted Prescription Snorkel Mask is both an inexpensive and well-received prescription mask option. With lenses available in increments of 0.5, ranging from -1.all the way up to -10.0, it is made of silicone, tempered glass, and uses a buckle design and adjustable strap to fit a variety of different head shapes.

Since it has received plenty of good press online, I decided to try it out myself. It did get a little bit foggy underwater, so I recommend using some sort of anti-fog treatment ahead of time on the lenses. Other than this mostly trivial issue, it was a fantastic mask. Considering the amount you pay for this thing, you get a lot of value for your money. In particular, I’d recommend this mask to beginners or intermediate snorkelers who aren’t ready to spend a ton of money on equipment.

I didn’t have to put a lot of effort into adjusting the belts on the mask, which was nice. A lot of the cheaper models I’ve run across in the past loosened gradually over time to the point I couldn’t even use them. The build quality with this mask in particular is pretty phenomenal for the price.

It fit comfortably underwater, sealed well, and provided superior vision quality. My wife, who has worse vision than I do, really enjoyed this brand in particular. She has a pair that she uses underwater whenever we have the chance to snorkel in local waters.

Empire E-Vent and E-Flex Goggles and Accessories

Empire released the E-Vents in 200and instantly became a major player in the goggle industry. After both they, and JT Paintball were bought out by KEE action sports, Empire gained the rights to use some components of the ProFlex masks. They used the popular flexible bottoms, and combined it with their tried and true E-Vent, to make a new mask the E-Flex. Currently the E-Flex is one of the most popular masks due to the great combination of the two masks, they combine the comfort of the ProFlex, with the easy lens system of the E-Vents.

Upgrade Path

If you want to step up in price and weight, for better edge performance, get a more modern lens in the 100-125mm range, such as the Nikkor or Rodenstock 100mm f/5.These lenses are typically mounted in standard Copal 0 shutters, and can be freely transplanted between any size 0 shutter.

Ordinary long lenses quickly become awkward on the Mercury. A flange focal distance of greater than 150mm is not recommended, as Front Mounting Spacers need to be used after that point to greatly extend the front of the camera. (Of course, users may have many reasons for doing this for specialty lenses, special uses, etc.) So, if longer than 150mm focal length is desired, usually for portraiture, tele-photo lenses are recommended. Tele-photo lenses have enlarging elements built into them that increase their effective focal length without proportionally increasing their flange focal distance. So they can sit closer to the camera and still provide long focal lengths.

Collimate w ith a homemade tool

Get an old plastic film canister and pierce the base in the centre with a 1-2mm drill bit. Put a paper-reinforcing ring on the exact centre of the telescope’s main mirror.

Take out the eyepiece and replace it with the collimation tool. Adjust the set of screws on the secondary mirror that aren’t on the back of it so that the paper ring is in the centre of the view, seen through the tool.

Make sure that the secondary mirror appears circular, not slightly elliptical, when seen through the collimating tool by adjusting the same screws on the secondary mirror.

Centre the main mirror by adjusting the screws on the back of the mirror holder. Look directly through the collimation tool. The view should look like the third image above, with the hole in the collimation tool in the middle of the paper-reinforcing ring. Your scope is now collimated.

Barrel Blockers

Finding the right protective gear is very important for playing airsoft safely.  Without proper equiment unfortunate accidents can happen and that is to be avoided at all costs.  The most important piece of protective gear when playing airsoft is eye protection.  We recommend using high quality full seal goggles for the most effective protection against BBs.  Other important gear includes lower face masks, helmetes, and hard knuckle gloves.

Pull Quote

Compact cameras have come a long way, delivering good enough quality that I’m comfortable using them in much of my own work. These sailfish were captured using a Sony NEX series mirrorless camera. The housing’s light weight and size was a huge advantage when pursuing these fast-moving subjects.

Shoot upwards

Shoot upwards towards the surface, not down (in nearly all cases), so your perspective includes more than just the sea bottom. If you aim your camera down, you are likely going to end up with a jumbled mess as your subject blends into the background of coral to the point where it’s hard to even pick apart the two. Separation is the name of the game; upward angles are key for isolating your subject against the water column. Exceptions: creatures with beautiful backs like sharks, cetaceans, and turtles against contrasting backgrounds like sandy bottoms or open ocean. Trying to shoot is why many photographers opt to use expensive 4degree or 90 degree viewfinders.

Upward angles help show context and remind the viewer that they are underwater by including a blue background. A downward angle, while appropriate for very specific subjects, can make it much more difficult to get oriented, and they make it more likely that subjects will blend in with the background.

Expose things properly

As with any type of photography, proper exposure is critical to get good results when shooting underwater. However, underwater photography adds additional complexity because artificial lighting is used most of the time. This requires balancing light from strobes or video light with the ambient light in the scene, especially in wide angle. This is done by dialing in shutter speed, ISO, strobes, and aperture independently, so it’s good to get comfortable with your camera’s manual mode.

Assuming an ISO is fixed at the right level, in a nutshell an underwater photographer lights a foreground subject by adjusting the aperture and your lighting system’s power. Then, since strobes are faster than the shutter speed and won’t be affected by the adjustment of that, the shutter adjustments are used to correctly expose the background to be light or dark blue (depending on the photographer’s preference). The best underwater images put the viewer in the underwater environment without making it obvious that the image was artificially lit.

This background/foreground and shutter speed/aperture/ISO technique takes a little while to get your head around, but with a little practice, it will lead to well-exposed images.

Great cameras to build a waterproof camera rig around

Again, for serious underwater photography, in general we do not recommend rugged point-and-shoots for use as underwater cameras—we recommend great regular cameras plus housings, which serve as waterproof suits of armor. Although you can choose a GoPro plus accessories or a rugged point-and-shoot camera that is mildly waterproof, your best bet for going deep and taking great photos is to pick something like the RX100 III or a mirrorless camera.

Sea & Sea YS-DStrobe

The YS-Dis a powerhouse of underwater lighting, giving nearly as much power output as the company’s much larger and more expensive YS-250 according to Backscatter’s strobe testing article. The YS-Dis powered by four AA batteries, easily enough to get you through two dives.

Oh, and, you might need two, but more on that later. (For the record, Brian Lam uses these strobes for his dive expeditions along with the Olympus OM-D EM-5.)

Sea & Sea YS-0Strobe

The YS-0is a good starter strobe, which makes it a good companion for point-and-shoot systems. This model (and all of the lights below) can be configured with the packages we mention above.

The Sea & Sea YS-0is a great starter strobe, and the perfect companion for many point and shoot systems because it is the lowest end model that does automatic strobe power metering (TTL, which is the way the camera’s flash can automatically control the external light’s power) which is how some people like to start out shooting underwater.

The strobe can only be triggered fiber-optically and cannot be used with non-fiber optic housings like those commonly found on older or much higher-end DSLRs without flashes, so it’s not a big limitation.

So why get a more expensive YS-Dover the YS-01? The YS-0is at least a few stops of light less powerful than the YS-D1, and that matters when trying to expose things using diffusers to light wide angle or fish eye shot or macro lenses where you need to stop down the aperture to get a good depth of field. It also takes longer to re-power (cycle) between shots.

In a nutshell, a DSLR and mirrorless camera deserve the more expensive YS-D1; for point and shooters who don’t want to upgrade later, the YS-0is fine. Again, realize the YS-0is about the same size as the YS-D1.

Like the YS-D1, you may need two of these. And again, more on this decision later.

Light & Motion Sola 2100 Video Light – Spot & Flood

Sola 2500 Flood

This blenny was photographed using video lights. While a strobe is generally the most powerful light source for still photography, especially for moving subjects, video lights have come a long way in terms of their intensity, especially for the Sola 2100 and its intense spot beam.

Why aren’t we recommending this as our main pick for a video light? Well, frankly: most of the people who have contributed to this article have spent a lot of time diving with the Light & Motion lights and know they’re solid and reliable. Over time, we’ll know how we feel about the FIX NEO lights, too, but for now, we feel safer recommending the Solas.

Magic Filters

Video filters are another option for getting good color underwater, though Magic Filters work best in bright conditions and require a custom white balance to be set on your camera.

Video filters such as Magic Filters are another viable option for getting good color when shooting wide-angle video underwater. Using these red-orange tinted filters involves setting a custom white balance in your camera off of a grey slate, the sand, or your hand in a pinch. Filters work incredibly well in clear water while always keeping the sun at your back for maximum saturation in the image. They cut a couple stops of light, so bright conditions are the best time to use them.

Getting your camera and strobe settings right

Protip: Some cameras will let you manually ratchet down your camera’s internal flash power (which is merely used to trigger the fiber optic input of the strobes) to its lowest setting, allowing you to save a lot of battery life on your body.

Putting it all together (with arms and trays and clamps)

A Nauticam NA-D7100 housing with a single YS-Dstrobe attached using arms and clamps. The camera communicates with the strobe using its built-in flash via a fiber optic cable, which connects through the top of the housing. Photo courtesy of Nauticam USA.

Once you have your light source picked out, you’ll need to have a way to actually attach it to your camera housing. With GoPros, point-and-shoots, and most mirrorless cameras, the easiest way to achieve this is using a tray and handle system. The housing attaches to the tray using threaded screws, and then the light or flash can be attached to the tray using clamps and arms.

The Nauticam NA-EMhousing and most SLR housings typically have handles built in and the strobe arms can be directly connected without the use of a tray. In either case, the whole setup looks like an erector set and can be a bit confusing to configure at first. But it will become easier after assembling a few times. The benefit of this system is that you can very quickly reposition the lights depending on the distance and location of your subject. (Buying your housing and lights through the Backscatter packages we’ve linked to will give you options to get the right clamps and arms with your setup.)

Wrapping it up

This guide is just the start of your journey beneath the surface into underwater imaging. Whatever your budget, any of the top picks in this article will give you a terrific platform to start exploring the amazing imaging opportunities that abound in the underwater world.

They key to success is going to be practice. Only by trying, failing, adjusting, and trying again will you progress in your shooting. Photographing is definitely harder underwater, and memorable images must be earned. Know your tool and its limitations. At the end of the day, any of the setups mentioned here are just that—a tool. It’s the skill of the photographer that will help bring the images to life.  Most of all, have fun and enjoy taking your camera to a place that most people never would dream of taking theirs. Happy diving!

Complete protection with a welding helmet

Welding helmets are a type of headgear used while performing welding in order to protect you from harmful radiations emitted during the process; welding helmets also protect your face, neck against the flame and flashes generated during the welding. Best welding helmet is necessary for the protection of your eyes, as the unprotected exposure to radiations emitted can inflame your eye cornea, which in turn causes arc eye. The radiations emitted could also burn your retina, which can lead to loss of your vision. Welding can also lead to skin burns as radiations emitted may also affect your skin.

Virtue VIO Contour Thermal Paintball Goggle

If you are looking for a high-rated paintball mask that is virtually packed with all the features you could think of, then your option could be the Virtue VIO Contour Thermal Paintball Goggle. Having tried many of the brands out there, I can state that this is probably the most comfortable mask ever. What I love about this mask is the goggle because they have a lot of brilliant functions such as begin fog resistant and changeable foam. It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or seasoned paintballer, this mask will blow your mind.

Current users agree that this mask, with its goggle, is one of the most comfortable masks you can get your hands on. The options are endless with the Virtue Vio, you can customize the mask to your needs with bunch of configurations by utilizing the removable face-mask, the adjustable straps and the lens. It includes dual thermal panes to prevent any fog or humidity to accumulate inside your glasses and also it has anti-scratch feature so it’s fair to say that the lens can sustain pretty rough treatment. You will have plenty of breathing space because of the air ventilation system around the face and because of the low profile and streamlined design

Key Features

This is the part where you attach your lens to inside the frame. The frame of the Virtue VIO features a special design in terms of frame. That is to say, you are able to customize the parts in a way that they can be removed, changed or replaced if you prefer so.  You are able to buy the lens, straps and the face-mask separately if you want to customize your color preference. The most important part of the goggle is the frame and you are able to keep it in spite of the color you prefer to add.

With this mask, you will get a big lens that will provide you with wide FOV (Field-of-View). It includes a thermal dual pane that will eliminate any humidity and fog.  The Virtue VIO contains a lens in a spherical shape. You are able to enjoy a distortion-free view with this mask. One of the greatest feature of the lens itself is that it will not limit your peripheral vision in any way.

It doesn’t matter what mask you buy, all of the manufacturers try to design the mask incorporating three things that are supposed to provide you with ample breathing space. However, not all of them are able to fulfill this feature. These three things are the goggle frame, spacing and venting. This mask includes all of these functions. The Virtue VIO includes ventilation both at the bottom and the top to provide maximum airflow. Another brilliant feature is the system that prevents your breath humidity to build up fog. This is done by allowing air to flow down and exit the goggle down.

Easy to Use

One of the best features of this mask is how easy it is to maintain and clean it. It has a comfortable fit as well as current owners claim that they hardly notice they are wearing a mask. If you have medium-large profile head, this mask is ideal for you. This mask is ideal for both indoor and outdoor play.

Air Circulation

It can be frustrated to play paintball if you are sweating a lot and sweat is dripping down your face. However, this mask is brilliantly designed to provide ventilation and quality air circulation. It will release accumulated warm air that would otherwise cause heavy breathing and even more excessive sweat. Those who currently own the Empire mask praise it for its unique freshness. So, if you are breathing fresh air, it means that the mask contains quality functional vents.

The nose of the mask contains foam that might feel sturdy for those who have big noses

Sly Profit Full Camo Goggle

It can be a daunting task to look for a perfect mask to fit your style of play and especially when you are seasoned player and you want a mask that is packed with features. You will see so many masks available that are extremely cheap with low quality design and these kinds of masks are not going to serve you well. Like I have said before, quality cost money and it goes without saying that you get what you pay for.

Let’s now look at the Sly Profit Full Camo Goggles. Here we have a brand that has established itself in the paintball market and this mask is considered to be one of the very best paintball masks that you can get your hands on. The Sly production team has really taken the step forward and they have gone through a lot of research to maximize the durability and features to the fullest extent.  The best thing about the Sly Profit goggles is that they will suit any kind of paintball player regardless of their skill level. You should consider to invest a little more than you intended in a mask, it is wise to invest in a high quality and durable paintball mask instead of going for a cheap, low-quality mask that will not last you for a long time.

Ear Pieces

Ears of a mask will come in many styles. Ear styles include soft or hard touch and they can be tall or short. The main objective of the ear is to protect paintballs from making any damages to your ears. You won’t look like bugs bunny wearing your mask. They are designed to keep paintballs away from your ears and they will be thin enough for you to hear everything clearly, plus they protect your ears.

Now we have gone through the factors about what makes a mask a mask and now it’s time to investigate how you can choose your mask.

Anti fog Industry

Fogging proves to be a major problem in most devices/equipment with transparent plastics or glasses.

Take for example, a motor cycle visor, face shield, speedometer or instrument cluster, just to mention a few.

The truth of the matter is, fog is a disgusting phenomenon that you must eliminate at all. Guess what? You can only do it if you have proper information about anti-fog solutions available in market. Don’t worry, you have come to the right place. This handbook has an exhaustive list of all anti-fog products you may need. It will guide you throughout the entire selection criteria.

It maximizes surface tension energy. There are very many types of hydrophilic substances such as polymers, hydrogels, nanoparticles and colloids, just to mention a few. This variation depends on the chemical constituent of the anti-fog agent. Take for instance: titanium oxide is highly hydrophilic when subjected to UV light.

Don’t worry, I will discuss all this companies in the last chapter. But, what am I trying to say? Companies have ventured and invested a lot of resources in anti-fog technology. For instance, WeeTect introduced an advanced anti-fog solution for IP cameras and instrument cluster.

You can’t compare the current and traditional anti-fog products.

Why? The anti-fog coating, film or solution resist fogging for longer period of time.

That is: Workers do not have to remove their eyewear or instrument screens to wipe.

Anti-fog flow coating

Having the right treatment formula to protect an equipment from fogging is never enough. You must adopt an efficient way to apply the anti-fog treatment. As I said earlier, this is what we shall discuss here before proceeding to the later section where will discuss the specific applications of this technology. Flow coating is a popular technology in anti-fog technology. Ideally, this describes how one applies anti-fog treatment.

That is

This is one of the simplest methods of coating substrates with an anti-fog solution. This makes easy to adapt to any manufacturing environment. It is a flexible and adaptable from the fact that, the thickness of anti-fog coating is controlled by rate of withdrawal and solution properties. The dip tanks can be modified to accommodate substrates of all sizes. The main disadvantage of anti-fog dip coating is that, it is not suitable for products that may float on an anti-fog solution.

Anti-fog hydrophilic coating

I believe you have come across this and I had mentioned it earlier. To make you understand how anti-fog hydrophilic coating works, I will explain to you what we mean by hydrophilic. It is the most active component of this ant-fog coating. From experience, I can confidently say, hydrophilic products are a perfect solution to any fogging problem. So, what is a hydrophilic coating? These are coating with water-loving properties.

It implies that, their chemical properties makes them to participate in a dynamic hydrogen bonding with surrounding water molecules.

Most of them exist in ionic form and are negatively charged thus, speeding up aqueous interactions. Moreover, the above chemical interaction produces hydrogel materials. This explains the reason why hydrophilic coating may exhibit low coefficient of friction. Does this seem too technical? You should not get worried since I will make it simple for you.

Here we go

Are you familiar with different types of angles? That is 90 or 180 degrees, acute and obtuse angles? Let me define an important aspect that will help you understand what I will discuss next. This is contact angle. A contact angle is an angle between a solid-liquid interface and liquid vapor interface. Contact angle that is less than 90°, also referred to as low contact angle, favors wetting. Implying, the fluid will spread over the surface thus, hydrophilic. This is an indication that, there is high adhesive forces. Does this seem complicated? May be you can contact our technical team. The main reason why I have gone into a detailed explanation of this concept is: When you understand hydrophilic, then it will be easy to comprehend what we mean by hydrophobic. We shall discuss this in next subtopic. It will help you understand why it offers a permanent anti-fog solution.

Anti-fog hydrophobic coating

Hydrophobic are water repelling substrates. As I had mentioned earlier, their properties are basically the opposite of hydrophilic substrates. The manufacturing industries try to explore the effectiveness of both the anti-fog hydrophilic and anti-fog hydrophobic coatings. It is due to their effectiveness when it comes to eliminating fog. Here, a question of wettability also plays an integral role. This is a basic fact that you can’t ignore when you plan to invest in this industry. Can you remember what I said about hydrophilic substance? Well, I will use those points to distinguish additional aspects I would like you to know about hydrophobic substances. This will act as a good foundation before we focus on using anti-fog hydrophobic coating to eliminate fog. When the contact angle is greater than 90° then, it implies that wetting of a surface is unfavorable. Such fluids are referred to as hydrophobic. Again, there are others that we refer to as super-hydrophobic coatings. The contact angle is greater than 150°. In short, hydrophilic substrates are referred to as “water loving” while hydrophobic substances are referred to as “water repelling”.

Hydrophilic & hydrophobic anti-fog coating

At times, the manufacturer may decide to combine the two in one anti-fog coating. This guarantees a permanent and a long-lasting solution to the fogging problem.

In such situation, you will have an equipment that functions as:

Polyester anti-fog film

Polyester films are popular in most industrial setup. This is due to their superior physical and chemical properties. Generally, polyester combines good chemical, mechanical, optical and thermal properties. May be, this may sound really general, I will explain this shortly. But, why is this important? You may come across various anti-fog films. So, the purpose of this section is to help you make an informed decision on the exact material to consider for as your film. It is important that you take this seriously since it is where people go wrong. When you opt for polycarbonate and not polyester (vice versa), then it will undermine the performance of the anti-fog product. You will not be able to balance between cost and performance. Don’t worry, there are quite a number of people who are in such a situation.

For example

Now that I have introduced you to some properties of polyester, we need to narrow down to those with anti-fog property. You should understand the fact that, polyester is not naturally resistant to fogging. Therefore, it must be treated with various anti-fog products. It is part of chemical treatment I had mentioned earlier. This process is not different from other procedures such as anti-static or surface slip. It is the performance that differs. I have used treated polyester films before, they provide permanent anti-fog solution alongside the key advantages mentioned above. However, this high performance is only possible if the anti-fog products manufacturing company incorporates a controlled manufacturing process. Well, it is true that polyester anti-fog films will prevent fogging even in adverse weather conditions. That is, under fluctuating humidity and weather conditions.

It does not matter whether the material is subjected to:

Here is the deal

As you can see, the example I have given above only focuses on how the film binds on the surface. That is not all, I will explore other factors shortly, keep reading… Did you know that some polycarbonate anti-fog films offer permanent performance?

Well, this is possible through advanced technological advancements we have witnessed in the recent past. This is also a vital factor you need to consider. It also plays an essential role when it comes to choice of material. Next, I will explain the installation and maintenance process: I know this is what most people tend to focus that most factors listed above.

Polycarbonate anti-fog film has a lightweight. Therefore, installation process is easy and simple. The fact that polycarbonate is resistant to most chemicals makes it easier to clean than other products we use to eliminate fogging phenomenon.

Obviously, eliminating fog and ensuring that you have a clear view at all times is guaranteed. You don’t need to worry about it. In fact, it provides 100% visibility. It is time to introduce you to another product in this chapter before I discuss various types of polycarbonate sheets.

Adhesion detachment strength

Any film adhesive should meet either FTM or FTM standards. Ideally, this is the strength you need to detach pressure sensitive adhesive from a testing board. In most cases an adhesion strength can be determined based on different time frames. That is, 20 minutes, 2hours to week. The difference between FTM and FTM is based on the testing temperature.

This is determined based on

Ideally, this refers to the strength need to separate a self-adhesive anti-fog film from a protective sheet on which it has been attached.

Apart from these two, you need to evaluate the following:

Other factors that are crucial include the environment and surface where you intend to use anti-fog film back adhesive. Since the beginning this handbook, we have reviewed anti-fog sprays and films. It is time that I need to review anti-fog plastics too. You can check this out in our next chapter.

Anti-fog anti-scratch PC sheet

I didn’t mention an ability to resist scratches in the physical and chemical properties above. The truth of the matter is, neither polycarbonate sheets nor films are resistant to abrasion/scratch. It is this reason that you have to treat a PC sheet with anti-abrasion additives. This is the only way you can have a reliable anti-fog, anti-scratch PC sheet. Well, in the recent past, most anti-fog PC manufacturing companies strive to improve the performance of their products. A good example is WeeTect anti-fog, anti-scratch PC sheet (WAFASPCS). Such PC sheet is considered multi-purpose thus, recommended for a wide range of applications such as safety glasses, ski goggles, side windows or face shields.

Such PC sheets are recommended where visibility cannot be compromised. That is, there is neither scratches nor fog on the surface. You can rate them as polycarbonates with superior optical clarity (class 1). What comes to your mind when I talk of abrasion? I know you could be thinking of one scratching the surface of polycarbonate sheet using a sharp object. Well, you could be right. But, did you know that cleaning agents can cause scratches on PC sheet? It is for this reason that you will find abrasion and chemical resistance properties always go together.

Resistant to stain.

Remember, anti-fog, anti-bacteria PC sheets offer these benefits alongside those I had mentioned earlier. That is, the physical and chemical properties of polycarbonates alongside the snit-fogging property. As a matter of fact, this is an innovative solution aiming to improve performance and reliability of existing products. Most people find it difficult to believe this. It is for this reason that I have to explain how the anti-bacteria treatment works.

Like anti-fog and anti-abrasion additives, anti-bacteria additive is commonly used is an active component. Depending on the manufacturer of the product, it provides a biostatic and biocidal action.

Tablet Buying Guide: What to look for when buying a tablet

There’s a lot more to tablets than just the iPad. If you’re looking to replace a PC with something simpler and more portable, or just want a grab-and-go device for email and movies, we’ve got answers to all your tablet questions.

But if you just want a fast and easy answer, these are a few of our current top choices.

Apple iPad Pro

Apple’s iconic iPad is the most popular tablet, and for good reason: it has stellar performance, the largest app store and a fantastic ecosystem that supports access to an incredible number of tools, games and music and video apps. The processor inside of the iPad Pro 9.7, our top choice, is one of the fastest mobile chips available. It’s the best iPad model to get, though it also comes in a larger 12-inch model. If you want to save some cash, the older iPad Air is still a worthy choice, too.

Google Pixel C

If you prefer Android, the Google Pixel C is for you. It’s a speedy 8.9-incher with top-notch graphics performance. Google’s growing ecosystem is confidently catching up to Apple’s, though it still lacks in tablet-optimized apps. It also has a solid magnetic keyboard accessory (sold separately) that connects so strongly, you can even hold it upside down and it won’t detach.

Microsoft unsurprisingly makes the best Windows tablet.

Google Android

While iOS tends to get first dibs on the latest apps, Android has definitely made strides of late with its media ecosystem. Movies, TV shows, magazines and games, in particular, have seen vast improvements in both quantity and quality of selections. Also, it’s a more customizable OS than any other.

A Windows tablet can do anything a Windows laptop can do.

Microsoft Windows 10

Microsoft’s latest operating system works great on traditional laptops and desktops, but also on tablets and hybrids. The latest Windows OS combines the best parts of old and new Windows features into a cohesive package, and its functionality focuses largely around taking advantage of a touchscreen. Unfortunately, the app store is severely lacking in variety and number of apps available in comparison to both iOS and Android, but because it’s Windows, you can get software from just about anywhere.

Not all stylus are created equal — or offered for free.
