Seems that the material is good. It has a very beautiful color but I don’t really like the texture. The design quality is top notch and the color is nice. I really liked it. Why did this storybook sketch pads take third place?

I liked the design. We’ve been using it for 2 months and it still looks like brand new. This price is appropriate since the product is very well built. It is inconvenient to use due to the size. I am going to get something different next time. The material is incredibly nice to the touch. It has a great color, which will suit any wallpapers.

Opening Day of Toy Fair

Once the show started on Sunday, it was clear to see that the top trend across multiple categories was do-it-yourself (DIY), customization or personalization of toys and games. Kids want to construct and design their own playthings. Whatever the category, this DIY concept is a growing extension of the already successful arts and crafts category, which saw an eight percent increase in sales in 201(2percent during Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping). This custom-made play has now moved beyond this category into science, pretend play, action figures and play sets, wearable accessories, construction toys, ride-ons and more.

Make it Yourself

Several players have tapped into exactly what kids want to make these days—everything from tie dying fabrics, nail art (a category continuing to expand on its own), jewelry, decorative pieces like pillows and other knits, duct tape designs, wall art and much more.

Arts and crafts continue to grow, and tweens are a big part of this market. Sketch It Nail Pens, which include nail polish sticks that double as writing pens, kits for decorating lunch bags, backpacks, tech devices like phones and speakers and more colored up the Alex booth.

The company is also recognizing the need for crafting play for the younger set and has expanded its Alex Jr. line for 1months and older and is also launching a more unisex Colossal Art Set with 31pieces.

New to Toy Fair, Sugar Lulu made a splash with some more sophisticated DIY pieces, including silver chain necklaces, bracelets and room décor, bags and more. The collection includes sticker books, games and Picture Perfect Pinups (six reversible clips with fun designs and six feet of shiny chain to clip up photos).

Kids can also make their sneakers a fashion statement with Shwings Shoe Looms and charms. The charms screw through the eyelet holes on the sneaker and let kids hook rubber bands from charm to charm using different colors and patterns; the rubber bands make it easy to slip the shoe on and off and eliminates the need to tie their shoe laces.

There are styles for both boys and girls. Bling2O has expanded its line of fashion swim goggles with new shapes and colors, while the creators of Play-Doh creators, is launching its crafting kits this fall from Hasbro. The Play-Doh like crafting material comes with a special application tool for personalizing frames, cards and making some original, more 3D art pieces.

Faber Castell tapped into more fashion crafts with items like the Fedorable Fashion hat, a black hat that comes with four, bright fabric markers for easy decorating and personalization. Picking up on the loom trend is the Rubber Band Studio, which contains a portable, upright loom for take-along crafting. In the jewelry category are a variety of SKUs, including Rhinestone Wrap Bracelets, Lots of Knots, Tie-Dye Jewelry and Tooby Loops Jewelry.

Creativi

Faber Castell ty for Kids also debuted more than 30 new products under the Creativity for Kids and Faber-Castell names, including six themed Creativity Cans in response to the line’s success. Available this May, the new additions will feature subjects like art, music, critters and more.

The DIY fix has also seeped into Madame Alexander’s collection. The Sew It Academy lets kids make their own outfits and accessories for the Dollie & Me collection of 18-inch dolls.

For pretend play, Urban Canvas expanded its eco-friendly cardboard DIY design and play sets. New is City Stories, the City Streets Collection. Kids can create their own urban landscapes by designing their own stores, cafes and neighborhoods.

Designer Play

Modern Design, a new zone to Toy Fair, featured more artist-driven toys and games, perfect for the specialty markeet. Vendors told Playthings that the new section was a perfect fit for their products. The aisle featured companies like Areaware with its birch plywood playing cards by industrial designer Donald Corey. The cards feature suits and numbers in mid-century design and double and can also be used for construction play with interlocking slots on the sides.

Modern Mobiles

Also on hand was Pure Play Toys. The collection of woodern toys are all handcrafted in Centerville, TN, and the company’s fishing rod is a top seller. “Our big social mission is to bring back jobs to the U.S.,” said company co-founder Mike Grant. “We could have set up shop anywhere, but Tennessee has a good source of wood and good woodworkers.”

Soft Play

Of course, do-it-yourself crafting also spilled into Melissa & Doug latest offerings with new Mess Free Glitter kits, Tie-Dye and other crafting kits, but the company focused on more additions for its younger set, including extended role play offerings like Order Up, a line of pretend cookware and food for burgeoning chef; new dress-up sets include nurse, magician and pilot costumes. Melissa & Doug also debuted more soft books from its K Kids collection.

Also for the smaller kids, plush played a big role at Toy Fair. Aurora is getting ready for the 100th anniversary of Raggedy Ann and Andy in 201New for Toy Fair is a special edition of Raggedy Ann and Andy in western dress. The company is also releasing a limited edition replica Raggedy Ann from the 1940s. The doll is dual sided: asleep on one side and awake on the other. It comes in packaging that is a replica of the original. The company also added more sparkles and rich color to its Sea Sparkles and Fancy Pals lines, which includes

Lenz Frenz one of the more unusual (yet lovable) plush animals in the collection, the Sloth.

There were other unusual plush toys around the fair. Walrus Toys offered its Chimeras-plush critters with interchangeable parts so that kids can create their own combinations. Soapets are plush animals for bathtime use. They have a pouch that holds a bar of soap. New to market is Lenz Frenz, cuddly keepers for kids’ eyeglasses and contact lenses. There are six characters: three that can wear the glasses but also have an eyeglass case in the body, and three smaller ones that will hold a contact lens case.

Folkmanis of six sets aimed at girls ages and up. The beezebee collection also has new bath toys and puzzles, while its popular Calico Critters collection had new animal family additions, including beavers, pigs and polar bears, along with a toy shop and bakery.

Folkmanis was also on hand with some of their new additions of plush hand puppets, including a Princess and Prince, Caterpillar, Golden Retriever, Bald Eagle, Ostrich and Dragonfly finger puppets, while Cloud b showcased its Twilight Buddies line of sleepytime plush pals, including a pig, fox and rabbit that project constellations on the walls. The Twinkling Firefly Frog comforts little ones at bedtime with light-up fireflies. Tweens in search of cool room décor will be able to choose from some new night light designs,

Lum Lums including the Octo Softees, Cosmic UFO and Dreamz to Go.

To encourage friendship between little girls, the Lum Lums doll line from Imperial Toy, made their first appearance at Toy Fair. When the dolls’ hands touch, they light up to signify a bond between friends. “It’s about empowerment through friendship,” said Lee Loetz, senior vice presiden of product development, Imperial Toy.

Let the Games Begin

From DIY to science, dolls and plush and more, games also has a big presence at Toy Fair. Endless Games introduced Korner’d, a challenging pattern recognition game. The board and pieces are very simple—made up of colored squares. Each playing piece is a square of four different colors that have to be matched on the board. Purchases of the game help to support Autism Speaks. (In testing the game, it was discovered that children with autism are often good with this type of pattern recognition and played it successfully.)

Diggin Active

Diggin Active has improved a classic game with its Stack ‘n Roll Bowling, a beginners’ kit that features nesting pins that store easily. The company’s Pop Up Soccer is a portable game that folds up for on-the-go play, while Lazer Pitch Baseball puts the power of the ball in kids’ hands and includes an R/C bat, five balls and a pitching machine. A multi-level rocket ship complete with an astronaut and wheeled robot figures as well as a line of games and toys made from bamboo, including pick-up sticks, dominoes, a circus balancing game and nesting xylophones are also part of the Diggin 201collection.

Fans of the Perplexus brand will love the latest incarnation from Patch Products: Perplexus Warp. This spherical octahedron features a 3D maze like its predecessors, but also has an external slider to help navigate the ball through its many twists and turns. The company’s Mirari family has grown to include MyPhone, a play smartphone for months and up and the Bouncy Bop Shape Sorter whose bouncy pad surface offers an added element of fun to a traditional toy. Patch is now offering Wood WorX wood craft kits, which let kids build a customized toy, like a car or jewelry box.

Buggy Bites

Learning just got a whole lot more entertaining, thanks to a collection of new products from Educational Insights. The Geosafari Underwater Bottom Boat has a floor that acts like a magnifying glass. Great for the tub, this toy proves that seeing is believing! The My First Microscope is designed with two eyeholes instead of the usual one, to make specimen-viewing less challenging for preschoolers. As a follow-up to the previous years’ Sneaky Snacky Squirrel and Shelby’s Snack Shack board games comes Frieda’s Fruit Fiesta Game, which teaches letter recognition with the help of a playful parrot.

Back in the D

Retro characters live on through the decades at Toy Fair, particularly with a number of upcoming film releases. Take Jim Henson’s The Muppets. Miss Piggy, Kermit the Frog, Fozzy bear and Animal made an appearance in the Madame Alexander booth. The doll company debuted its The Muppets collection of plush collectibles and hand puppets modeled after the fab four Jim Henson Muppets. The collection is in support of the upcoming Muppets Most Wanted film out this March.

NECA introduced its Scalers, clip on accessories that “hold” on to mobile device cords. The first wave features more horror-driven characters like Freddy Krueger and Alien, while the upcoming waves will include other characters in the NECA collection. The company announced the addition of Lord of the Rings, Predator and Gremlins to the collection at Toy Fair. the company also showed off new figures, collectibles for Evil Dead 2, Pacific Rim and other properties, in addition to its expanded collection of multiple merchandise surrounding The Hunger Games.

Now in its 50th year, it was hard not to see the big metallic and mult-colored Daleks, the 1doctors and other popular characters in figures, construction, play set, collectible and other form, on the Dr. Who shelves at Underground Toys. The collection includes more plush, figures, playsets and more in the likeness of all 1doctors (including War Doctor John Hurt), some companions and lots of enemies like the bulbous Daleks, which come in plush, large and mini figures, Cybermen, Weeping Angels and more. In addition to the toys, the Dr. Who collection also has expanded into the home and accessories categories with items like ipod cases, Tardis jewelry boxes, throw pillows and blankets.

Next year, the American International Toy Fair will take place February 14-17, 2015.
