Stretch Film Dispensers Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy stretch film dispensers, right? No!

Stretch Wrap Manufacturing Process

As stated above, there are more ways than one to produce stretch wrap. At their core, forms of stretch wrap are all started off as resin. Resin is a base viscous plastic material that is often used for various crafts and industrial projects.

Some resins are able to dry solid, however that is not quite the aim when it is used for stretch wrap purposes. It has to be solidified yet retain its ability to move and stretch. The cast extrusion and blown extrusion processes have slight differences that mean either a more expensive film or one that can be put out on the market for less.

For the cast extrusion process, small drops of resin are slowly fed into a heated barrel before they are forcibly moved down a narrow, slotted die. From this process, a plastic film-like substance is produced which is then required to be moved along for cooling across a rolling path that has automatically been set for cooling.

This is what sets the film and solidifies it to be identified as a non-viscous plastic film. From there, production can keep going until the ending film is wrapped around individual rolls, displayed as what we know as the rolls of stretch film we often buy that are on the slightly cheaper and cost-effective side of the market.

The blown extrusion process is the more expensive of the two processes which results in a product that is a little more expensive to purchase than its cousin. The process starts out exactly the same as with cast stretch wrap as resin is moved through to a heated barrel and down the die. However, it is from here that the two processes change. Instead of simply being placed on a cooling track, the heated resin is then forced and blown in a vertical position into a bubble. The cooling process is done simply by the cool air in the manufacturing room.

The blowing process stretches the film out, and after its deflating the manufacturers being to stretch and roll it into the rolls of stretch film we purchase today. Due to the process being more time consuming for machinery and increased cooling times, the output of this film is significantly less than cast film. The result is a strong film, but it lacks the ability to be sold for less than cast stretch film processes.

The below video is a great example of the cast extrusion process for machine stretch wrap in action for those who are wanting to see the whole manufacturing process in action.

As you can see, the process is huge, but the output efficiency of the current machinery used in the manufacturing process is currently at the highest it has been in recent years as commercial products continue to be manufactured and consumerism remains at as high levels as it is.

Protection and Packaging in One

Think about the alternative to sealing your products for a long trip or for storing. You could invest in plastic strapping to tie products to pallets. You could also invest in strapping for the express purpose of maintaining a steady, secure load during transport. You could have your products stored in neat boxes that will protect them – but only just.

It is known that a vast number of products have been damaged every year by being left in damp storage conditions, by weather during transportation including rain penetrating into cases and ruining the product, and sun damage. There is also the additional concern of theft. Open displays of boxes can be tempting for any would-be thief. A pallet covering can help to keep your items safe, but there is one key way to keep your items safe.

Stretch wrap is, therefore, the absolute best alternative to strapping out there. As mentioned above, there are varying degrees of strength and film quality on the market, giving a film that will suit almost every professional’s budget. All films, due to being non soluble, are able to withstand wind and rain and keep damp from creeping up into product packages through external cardboard casings.

Wooden boxes are strong, but there is not much that can be done about damp and cold unless stretch pallet wrap is introduced. Instead, invest in stretch wrap and you will find a superior level of quality depending on which product you purchase, and have the same stability as you would with plastic strapping.

We don’t only see stretch wrap in the transportation and production industries though. There are far more practical uses and applications that are overlooked that can be crucial for businesses if not utilised properly.

Practical Stretch Wraps

You may also have the opportunity to buy stretch wrap that is manufactured to fit a very precise purpose.

Opaque Stretch Wrap – By definition this is any stretch wrap that does not allow any light in or out of it. This is most commonly seen as a dark, black film that is wrapped around products for maximum security and protection. As nothing can be seen through it, there is less of a chance of immediately being targeted for thievery.

Without product names or codes on show, products become entirely anonymous. You can also use it to protect from UV rays as they do not allow UV rays to penetrate through the film, and this is a considerably good thing due to the fact that many products can be quickly damaged by UV rays. Long-term storage is ideal as it is less likely to deteriorate, lasting longer than the leading clear stretch films combined.

UV stretch wrap – Like the opaque films, this is defined as being a film that distinctly protects products from harmful UV rays. If the shipment or item storage is within the sun for more than two months, it should be covered in UV film to protect it from damage from sun and inopportune weather conditions.

Vented Stretch Wrap – Placed on wooden pallets during storage and transportation, this is the best option for anybody requiring a layer of protection and stability that also needs to leave room for breathability and a consistent air flow to the product.

In particular, it is made good use of by those in the agricultural, beverage and medical packaging industry needs. If you should ever require air without compromising the safety of your pallet wrapper, give specialty vented stretch wrap a try.

Anti-Static Wrap – Electrical goods are well known for giving off electric shocks at the best of times. Cling film is also a great conductor of electricity. Damage can be caused by static discharge, and specialised anti-static wrap is the ideal method of ensuring that all electronic products do not suffer this during shipping and storage. Less static is generated during the wrapping process than with over stretch wraps, so it is the more plausible option for electronic shipping.

Industry Approved

You’ll be wondering just what our list could include for those looking for the uses of hand and machine stretch wrap. It is true that the most common form of stretch wrap usage is in the transportation of pallets and pallet-strapped products. This is the most efficient method of transportation available to industries today, yet other industries have also been using stretch wrap in incredibly innovative ways.

Agriculture – Agriculture is often making use of stretch film for a variety of applications. To name a few, it is often used in the transportation of plant material with vented stretch wrap that allows them to be able to breathe during transportation easily. Food storage for the animals is also accomplished by using stretch wrap. A strong stretch pallet wrap must be used as more often than not, feed can be extremely heavy and can cause rips and tears through weaker plastics, so ensure you have the correct gauge of film for your requirements.

Landscaping – Coverings of stretch wrap can be a great advantage for covering up areas of plants that may need to be kept warm and damp like a miniature greenhouse and stretch wrap can be a beneficial way to keep plants warm. It is also helpful for the protection and storage of mulch, allowing for more efficient keeping of materials.

Construction – Coverings are always seen on construction sites, but stretch wrap is also becoming more widely used for the express purpose of protecting a multitude of products. Rocks, bricks, clay, tubing; you name it, it is more often than not secured by stretch wrap as the preferred method of protection.

Long-term storage can also be accomplished with opaque stretch films, meaning that products will not be damaged in the process. The general problems that can come from building sites such as accidental damage are all but eliminated to save a professional job from turning distinctly amateur.

Wood Preservation – Multiple industries use variations of stretch wrap in order to protect wooden products and materials. In particular, it is important to ensure that firewood is kept clean, dry and free from moisture. Vented stretch wrap can be beneficial for those who need the wood to be able to breathe the moisture back out that it collects while also keeping it collected together and safe as a collective unit of firewood for easy, cheap storage solutions.

Firewood is not the only wood-based company that often seeks out stretch wrap. Furniture sales are dominated by the production and transportation of wooden-framed products. Many are stored in cardboard boxes and others need an improved layer of security from any damage from outside elements.

Nobody wants to purchase a mould-infested product, so it is crucial to their industry that all furniture is kept dry and free of any impurities like mould.

Car Modification – Another area of industry that may often be overlooked is the car modification and engineering business. Indeed, there are numerous products on-site that most likely need to take benefit from the added protection of a covering of stretch wrap. Tyres are often wrapped in stretcg wrap to be able to keep them together on-site and during transportation either on a pallet or without. Pieces that require transportation are also wrapped in stretch wrap to ensure that materials do not become victims to rust and other depreciating problems that may deface the products.

Many, many more industries and professionals take advantage of the capabilities of stretch wrap in their day to day work.

Almost everything can be protected by stretch wrap as there are such different qualities to every roll of stretch wrap out there. Anything from paper, food, drinks, electronics, everything. You can see why transportation businesses trust little else than some great stretch wrap and strapping to ensure every product is kept at its safest.

Eco-Friendly Wrapping Solutions

For the eco-friendly company, or those that want to start reducing their carbon footprint and improve ratings with likeminded customers, there are new advances in technology that have started to allow us to develop eco-friendly ways of running our businesses. Indeed, even stretch wrap has begun to feel the force of it. Using less of your products and using them efficiently is absolutely key in the maintenance of the environment. When receiving packages or when run-off from old rolls of film are lying around, there is one thing you can do: recycle.

Recycling is the easiest way to keep your conscience clear when it comes to stretch wrap and being more environmentally-minded about your usage. Waste reduction is also a big factor in this, so make sure nothing goes to waste and that excess stretch wrap is properly recycled. Most films are now able to be recycled, so ensure you keep that in mind when using your film.

How to Use Hand Stretch Wrap

There can be a lot of job satisfaction in hand wrapping pallets but it can also be time consuming and fatigue inducing if staff are required to do multiple pallets hourly. Are you wrapping your pallets and products correctly? There is a great way to stretch wrap your pallets in a methodical way that gives the best results and the smoothest finish possible.

First of all, be efficient with your stretch wrap and pick the correct size of film that you will be needing to wrap the entire pallet. There is no use in using more product than is necessary which can also be detrimental to the environment. Keep it simple and use measurements you know. The easiest way to know this is after you have packed your products together on the pallet. Ensure that you have effectively placed your products together so that no free space is left as this can be incredibly dangerous. It is also important for you to take care of your health and that of those around you. If you struggle to bend down to the bottom of the pallet, consider elevating it a little to make the job easier on your body and that of others. It can also make wrapping a little more easily done.

With the products in place, it is time to wrap them. Ensure that you have the right tools for the job and that you are in a safe space to be able to work around the pallet. Also make sure there is enough space around it for you and colleagues to move and bend freely. With a roll in hand you can tie off the end of the film to the end of the pallet. Try to avoid making a knot, as this can cause some problems when unpacking the products and pallet later on in the process. Instead, find a way to allow the film to ‘stick’ to itself when wrapping around the corner of the pallet. From the bottom of the pallet, simply work your way around, ensuring that you do not let the film become too loose. Stand close to the pallet and keep the roll close against the packaging to make this an easier job. If your film is weaker – and even if you have a stronger gauge film – always remember to wrap around the pallet more than once. In doing so you will be protecting not only the products within the stretch wrap but your colleagues. If the pallet wobbles, wrap it up in another layer or two until all products are secure and stationary. Your safety is important, so no falling boxes or leaning pallets should be a priority.

Hand Stretch Wrapping ‘Machines’ For Small Businesses.

The quickest and most efficient way to ensure pallet wrapping is done by hand is to implement a tool that ensures the handling of the roll of stretch wrap is not too decidedly difficult. Without a method of being able to unravel the stretch film across the product effectively, it can be rather difficult to keep the film from sticking back to itself or making a mess of the entire job. You are free to use your hands when wrapping pallets, but it is recommended that you invest in a hand stretch wrapping machine – or roller – to help with the job.

At SNAPCO, we offer our own stretch film dispensers. The Pacplus Standard Stretch Film Dispenser is a great alternative to using your hands for stretch wrapping jobs. It is a great, cost-effective tool that allows you to be able to make your jobs far smoother, faster, and more effective as a result. No longer will you have to struggle with holding a roll of static-inducing film. The implementation of a stretch film dispenser is great for you and your employees to maximise workplace efficiency and ensure more packages and pallets can be wrapped.

Ease of use is a key feature, and you won’t find a product simpler and easier to use than this. Minimum effort is required to take it straight out of the box and get to working with it. You have an in-built twist grip handle, meaning that the roller can easily move to allow better speed and angling of the stretch wrap across pallets. It also means that you can easily adjust the tension of the film while wrapping, too.

This particular model for sale best fits rolls of film 400 – 500mm, with 38mm, 50mm, and 78mm cores. Exchanging old, used rolls for new ones is easy too. Simply take apart the easy to handle roller and your old roll will be able to slide off with complete ease. This is the best option for an all-round great performance from your stretch wrap.

A cheaper version of this dispenser is the Kinetix Stretch Film Dispenser. Designed for 400 – 500mm stretch wrap and fitted for a 38mm core, this is again a great option when considering what kind of hand stretch wrap tool to choose. Despite the price it is a robust little hand tool that is perfect for light usage.

It comes packaged as two separate pieces that can be inserted into each end of the roll of stretch wrap you choose, making changing of rolls and materials far easier than before. For a cost-efficient tool, this is a great option for your packaging.

Not all businesses need larger rolls of stretch wrap. For many, it can be as easy as needing the smallest of packages wrapped up to be sent away to sellers or customers. For those cases and businesses, we also stock the Handy Wrap Dispenser. Design specifically to hold smaller rolls of stretch wrap, they are also far easier to hold in your hand, needing only one hand for the job. It is fast, efficient, and ideal for a business with a lower output of products.

No matter what scale your business or the applications you will be using the stretch wrap on, there is always a method of stretch wrapping out there to suit you perfectly.

Machine Stretch Wrap for Low-Fatigue Shipping.

Now we get to the big guns of the stretch wrapping world. Hand wrapping your pallets is indeed very cost effective when you can’t afford other ways of getting the job done. Yet, there are always some disadvantages. For example, labour can make it difficult to have a concise, exact same job done every time due to factors including human error and judgement. Height, depending on the pallet, can be struggled with, and safety precautions may not quite be met. There are solutions out there – but they don’t come cheap.

Stretch wrapping machines are, without question, the absolute ideal way to master the art of stretch wrapping in your business. As mentioned, technology has improved in such a way that we are now capable of maintaining and modifying a same standard throughout our work with maximum efficiency and output like we have never seen before. Without machinery, we would not be able to gain the profits that we do as we simply could not hand wrap pallets to the same speed and consistency that stretch wrap machines can manage for us.

At SNAPCO we are sellers of some of the best stretch wrap machines on the market to date from two key manufacturers in the stretch wrap business: Optimax and Fromm.

PSW Range

The cheapest stretch wrap machine on our most wanted list is the Optimax PSW00Once you have taken a look at the amount of features that it possesses for the price, you will understand why are and others are in love with this brand. You pack all of your money into a great deal, getting quality and precision with every pallet wrapped. A maximum wrapping height of 2000mm and a turntable diameter of 1500mm makes this stretch wrapping machine great for larger pallets and heavier items. Another great new feature – especially when needing an easily unloadable machine, is that it has a system in place to always stop in the same position in which it started, giving forklifts a better job of placing and returning pallets to and from the machine’s turntable.

Specifications

No need to input the height of your pallets, the machine has it covered with photo sensitive height tracing technology. It also has a soft start and stop for easier handling of the products. In terms of output efficiency, it operates at a speed of 10rpm making it again a far easier option for businesses that need something to operate faster than people could manage to. For one of the most cost effective models on the market, try out the Optimax PSW001.

On the slightly higher end of the scale is the improved PSW00stretch wrapping machine. It features the same height and width as its cousin model, and has a maximum loading weight of 1650kg. That in itself is very impressive, meaning even more output possibilities due to speed and weight advancements. Yet, there is even more to this machine than first meets the eye. The finer details reveal what lies under its steel framework.

Stretch Wrapping Favourites from Fromm

We don’t only stock Optimax branded stretch wrapping machines. In fact, some more of our favourites and those of our customers are our mesmerising range of Fromm stretch wrap machines. Fromm are world renowned German engineers who constantly develop great products for the packaging industry. The amount of research and development that goes into every one of their products is staggering.

They work around the clock to ensure that products are fully tested before being sent to consumers, and their advanced engineers are always working to create products that satisfy the requirements of today’s professionals. Understanding the client base is extremely important to Fromm, and SNAPCO feel the same way, which is why we choose to stock their fantastic range of products.

Have a look at the video below for a great overview of all Fromm stretch wrapping machines and the technological capabilities.

Fromm FS380 Power Pre-Stretch Wrap Machine

One of the newest models from Fromm is the FS380. It is slightly more costly than other options from the stretch wrapping machine market but it has its own very good reasons for such. It is the ideal candidate for the most strenuous industrial uses. A larger business that has a greater output of products will really feel the benefits of investing in a Fromm stretch wrap machine.

Product Features

With all of these features in Fromm machines, you can see why they are becoming a quickly world renowned choice for stretch wrapping duties. Trust in us and in Fromm to create the perfect, safe stretch wrapping jobs for you. Need a way to transport your pallets safely too? The Fromm F300 series approach ramp can help with that. Ensure that all safety measures are followed correctly in the movement of pallets and machinery.

Machine Stretch Wrap Tailored to You

If you have a stretch wrap machine, you will want to invest in specially made rolls of machine stretch wrap that can be used with your tech.

Machines are capable of stretching films far more efficiently and effectively than people can and in a far more uniform manner. It is important to make sure that the stretch wrap that you have will not tear easily under the kinds of pressure that usually come from a machine. With that in mind, you can then go ahead and find a specifically marketed machine stretch wrap that you can use.

At SNAPCO, we offer NexGen Dynamic Machine Stretch Wrap for all of our customers. NexGen are trusted by us to provide a machine stretch wrap that has quality in its properties. The standard film equivalents available are 17, 20, and 2micron levels.

The material is very resistant to tearing and is manufactured to be a clear plastic covering for you pallets. When looking for a maximum efficiency brand of machine stretch wrap, NexGen is a great addition for the packaging businesses you may have.

Keep in mind that not every business needs to have a stretch wrap machine or invest in machine stretch wrap. Pay close attention to your budget, your labour force, and what you have available for spending on your work. Output does not need to suffer and any company can find the best stretch wrap deals for their requirements.

Clued up users

Eking better film economy out of stretch wrapping equipment isn’t just about advancing film and machinery technology though – it’s about users getting more clued up.

Power pre-stretch wrapping machines have been available for some years now, but according to Daren Spice, sales and marketing director with Gordian Strapping, that doesn’t mean companies are necessarily aware of the cost advantage they deliver. “Customers are surprised when they find out how much money they could be saving through power pre-stretch rather than running pre-stretched film on an older machine,” he says.

These savings have become even more marked as films and stretch rates have improved, and Gordian estimates that savings on film spend of up to 74.1% can be made when switching from hand film to a power pre-stretch machine, and up to 56.2% when switching from hand film to core brake.

The difference between core brake and power pre-stretch machines is that core brake wrappers use standard stretch film, whereas power pre-stretch machines take a special grade of film called power pre-stretch film and then stretch it 200%, 250% or 300% – depending on the type of pack and the wrapping specification required for pallet securement. “While stretching the film, the machine lays the film onto the pack with a measured resistance to ensure the pack presentation is correct and the load is secured to the pallet correctly without pack damage. Using power pre-stretch film ultimately saves money and means that you need less reels of film in stock because you are stretching the film on your reel and then applying it,” explains Spice.

Even companies who have invested in machines with power pre-stretch aren’t always getting value for money, due to the films they are buying and the way they are running their stretch wrappers.

Buying on price “People need to be more clued up about how much they can stretch films by,” says Mosca’s Booth. “If they’ve bought a £50,000-£60,000 stretch wrapper that is capable of 250% stretch, but are only stretching film by 150%, it’s going to take much longer to pay for itself.”

According to Booth, companies – bigger players included – are also guilty of buying films on price not stretch. “Customers don’t always know the stretchability of the film they are buying, so when someone comes along and offers a cheaper per tonne price they might think they are getting a bargain,” explains Booth. “However, as the make-up of the cheaper film is usually different, the operator has to turn the stretch down because the film keeps breaking, and the cheaper film becomes a false economy,” he adds.

The focus on reducing material and energy consumption is also driving a trend in a different area of end-of-line wrapping.

Shrink wrapping is renowned for being a heavy user of energy and materials. Now, end-of-line shrink collation is being challenged by a new method of collating items, according to B&B Maf, the German manufacturer of a system called the StretchPacker. “Wherever there is an end-of-line shrink wrapper, cartoning system or case erector the StretchPacker offers potential to reduce operating costs considerably and provide a more sustainable packaging solution,” says Alan Lewis, director of ShrinkPack, B&B Maf’s agent in the UK and Ireland.

The StretchPacker replaces traditional shrink collation and certain cartoning and case erecting systems with a solution that combines high speed servo drive systems with an impulse sealing and cutting system. This, according to B&B Maf, guarantees strong seals for the highest of stretch forces and results in a stable, tight collation which can be directly palletised.

The absence of a shrink tunnel means much less energy is required than with a shrink-wrapped collation, plus the ShrinkPacker is said to use considerably less film than shrink wrapping machines. It offers other advantages too: it can be used with heat-sensitive and various lightweight products such as frozen and chilled products, pasta shapes, cereals and boxed tissue.

Printed film can be used, and there is the potential to apply easy open perforations allowing the collation to be opened quickly in store without any requirement for cutting equipment.

B&B Maf has already delivered several StretchPackers into the food, beverage, pet food, food ingredient, chemical and agro industries for stretching cartons, pillow bags, pouches and sacks into film.

The push towards stretching thinner films to the limit has its roots in economics. Cost, as in so many other areas of business, is the driving factor although those using pallet wrappers do need to be wary of the risks. The reduction of energy and materials has its benefits but it is important that the sector remains clued up on what can’t be done as much as what can be done.

Star product

Danish firm DAN-Palletiser has developed a new palletiser which it claims overcomes the capacity, stability and safety issues associated with handling cans and buckets. “Palletising of metal cans and buckets has for many years been a challenge to our customers. These challenges are not getting any less owing to the fact that many of our customers in the food industry are now using plastic cans and buckets which easily weigh more than 2kilos. It has been difficult to fully automate the loading onto pallets with the necessary safety and capacity,” says Knud Jensen, managing director of DAN-Palletiser.

He says many customers have tried to solve the problem with a robot that lifts the buckets by vacuum, or by using a complex gripping head. “The problem with this approach is that the heavier the product and the higher the capacity, the more unstable the load on the pallet,” he explains.

Rather than lifting packs ‘by the hair’, DAN-Palletiser’s new MKplaces them gently on the pallet in the required pattern.

The palletiser also handles 300mmx400mm and 400mmx 600mm plastic crates, used widely by the food industry. It is available in two fully automatic versions, one with manual pallet shift and one with automatic pallet transport.

The palletiser can be bought outright or rented from DAN-Palletiser – the only company in Northern Europe to offer palletiser rental.

Equipment round up

Brillopak is now offering an ‘all electric’ in-line over conveyor pallet dispenser, which requires no air supply and is capable of stacking and destacking up to 120 pallets per hour. Key to the performance of the 2010E is an automatic adjustment feature that enables the machine to adapt to different sized pallets without the need for manual adjustment.

Friedheim International is primarily targeting graphics, publishing and stationery applications with a new automatic shrink wrapper and two new entry level seal/shrink combination machines from Audion Elektro. The new CS Matic automatic shrink wrapper is said to reduce film waste and increase production capacity. The H20 and H2models, meanwhile, are designed for moderate production volumes of up to 300 packs per hour.

With the launch of its new 1000 Solo (pictured), Buhrs, represented in the UK by Friedheim International, claims that affordable poly wrapping is now available to everyone. Designed for post-press wrapping applications and with a top operating speed of 10,000 products per hour, the 1000 Solo is geared towards small to medium sized companies.

A collaboration between Cermex and Newtec has yielded a new robotic palletiser, branded the PR, which offers an innovative new safety feature. The robot uses laser scanners to continually analyse the position of the operator and adjust its speed accordingly. It also incorporates PalDesigner – a configuration and simulation tool.

Choosing the Right Stretch Film for Your Application

Oftentimes, customers evaluate the purchase of stretch film based on the cost of the roll. But in reality, the main driver of stretch film costs is actually the cost of wrapping the pallet instead. If you have not evaluated the stretch wrapping process in your warehouse, your company could be missing out potential savings.

To identify those potential areas for cost savings, you first need to consider:

Matching the stretch film to the application

Optimal times for switching to automation with stretch film equipment

This article addresses all of these factors and highlights two case studies where Landsberg Orora offered solutions to reduce stretch film costs for two of its customers.

Standard Stretch Film

It is the most common in the market and has an application for almost every load. Its multi-layer technology provides greater strength over basic economy films and has a quiet release when wrapped (unlike blown stretch films).

Pre-Stretch Film

This film is even thinner and lighter than engineered films. But, it is fast wrapping, requires 10-1times less pull for optimal torque and provides greater coverage of the pallet. Pre-stretch also provides excellent containment pressure and superior cling to reduce unraveling and tension. It is also easier to handle and more ergonomically friendly to apply, which reduces worker injuries.

Most importantly, unlike conventional stretch films, pre-stretch is nick-resistant and extremely durable. About 25% of a conventional roll of stretch film is wasted because it becomes damaged. But you can bounce pre-stretch film on the ground and it won’t incur damage. Therefore, companies usually experience excellent costs savings as a result of the greater efficiency.

Hand vs. Machine Wrapping

Standard and engineered films are available for both hand and machine applications, so you need to consider your wrapping process before selecting a film. But pre-stretch film is a hand film only, so you should evaluate it as an option if you are using a manual wrapping process in your warehouse.

Volume and Cost

Next, consider how many pallets you ship per day, per week and per month. What material, time and labor costs are you currently incurring with those volumes? Once you have this data, you can compare films to find the most efficient solution.

Optimal Times for Switching to Automation with Stretch Film Equipment

If you wrap more than 2pallets per day, automating your stretch wrapping process could provide a substantial cost savings for your company. There is a variety of stretch film machines available, namely rotary stretch wrappers and orbital stretch wrappers.

There is also a variety of sizes and features for each model, including but not limited to automatic or semi-automatic machines with arms or turntables. You can check out examples of rotary stretch wrappers from our partners at Lantech and Wulftec as well as an orbital stretch wrapper like the Tab Wrapper Tornado from Tab Industries.

The Customer’s Existing Process

One of Landsberg Orora’s customers was using a traditional 18” 80 gauge stretch film to wrap 200 pallets a day by hand. Landsberg Orora analyzed the performance of the 80 gauge film, the material and labor costs associated with that film and offered two options to replace the 80 gauge stretch film.

Add extra height

In the application featured in this video, a Phoenix semi-automatic stretch wrapper (PLP-2150) wraps an oversized pallet of empty 2-liter bottles stacked roughly feet high. The stretch wrapping machine has extra height to accommodate the tall pallet and our largest-in-class turntable easily holds the pallet.

Keep it on the ground

A tall load has a greater risk of falling over than a standard height pallet. When the product is also light, this is even a greater concern. Limiting the movement of the pallets around the warehouse during the packaging process should be a consideration. We’ve pulled three examples to show several different ways to achieve this goal.

Our second video showcases a wall-mounted frame model of our semi-automatic rotary arm stretch wrap machine. The pallet load – whether it’s tall, light, unstable, or some combination thereof – remains on the ground during the entire wrapping process greatly decreasing the possibility of toppling over.

Get the film tension right

Our rotary ring stretch wrapper (which has optional conveyors as shown in the video or pallets can be wrapped from the warehouse floor if stability is a concern) has the finesse to apply enough tension to secure the load, but not too much as to crush the empty bottles. In the video, watch as the film carriage turns the corners, you’ll notice a slight billowing of the stretch wrap – that’s the light touch desired in this specialized application.

Define Stretch Wrapping Goals

If you’re thinking about purchasing a stretch wrapper, then you probably already have a baseline idea of what you need this machine to do. Now, it’s time to consider it further and think through the details of your production line.

If your organization is switching from hand wrapping, an automatic stretch wrapper or semi-automatic stretch wrapper can make a huge difference in terms of safety, production, consistency, as well as have an attractive return on investment.

One of the most important decisions to make is deciding between a semi-automatic (bottom photo) and an automatic pallet stretch wrapper (top photo).

There are a few key questions to ask yourself and your organization to begin to shape your stretch wrapping goals:

This will help determine if you have enough production to warrant a fully-automatic stretch wrapping machine and/or the speed required. In many applications, a semi-automatic stretch wrapper does just fine and is a great introduction to automation in the production line. It will also help you determine not only the right machine for now, but the right machine for future growth as well.

What are the must-have features? Are there any special features you need that may require customization?

There are likely some features that you can’t live without. This might be a low-profile turntable so pallets can be loaded by pallet jacks or a top sheet dispenser to protect a pallet load from the elements. Consideration of the must-have needs will help narrow your focus as you begin to consider stretch wrapping models in step two.

Is this stretch wrapper part of a greater automation initiative or a stand-alone automation element?

Integrating a stretch wrapper into the production line takes careful thought about the overall packaging process. If there are other automation elements, a new piece has to be able to keep pace with production.

Research Different Stretch Wrapper Options

Once you start looking, options for pallet wrapping machines can seem endless. That’s why this step is so important. It’s essential to understand the advantages of each different model and manufacturer. Match up each potential stretch wrapper against your defined goals identified in step one.

After an initial survey of available options, find out more about each stretch wrapper that matches your company’s criteria. Contact the manufacturers to feel out if their product and service suits your needs. Their expertise in stretch wrapping can help you further define your needs and guide you to the best option.

Compare Apples to Apples

Not all stretch wrappers are created equal. Some stretch wrappers may look similar, but it’s about the details. Look at service packages, warranties and delve into the specs. Phoenix stretch wrappers include many options in our standard models that other manufacturers consider “extras” or “upgrades.”

Make It Work For Your Budget  As with all business decisions, consideration has to be given to the budget. A stretch wrapping solution has to align as closely as possible to needs while being within a company’s budget availability.

Something to take into consideration is the cost savings possible with a stretch wrapper. For example, if you’re upgrading your production line from hand wrapping, you will see significant savings in stretch film. With a stretch wrapping machine, the film is pre-stretched drastically lowering the amount of film necessary to sufficiently wrap a pallet load!

If you are considering our high-speed rotary ring stretch wrapper, savings could be even greater. This pallet wrapping machine allows for one-way wrapping, which saves about 30 feet of stretch film with every pallet load while still providing the necessary load retention wraps.

The less tangible benefits of a stretch wrapping machine should be considered as well. Things like increased safety and fewer injuries, improved production and flow, and consistent and professional packaging are impacts that should be taken into account.

At this phase in the process, you should have a good idea of the best stretch wrapping solution that fits your needs, goals and budget. There’s just one more step.

Customize Your Packaging Solution

Perfect the Prestretch

One of the most important pieces to stretch wrapping success is to ensure the stretch film is properly pre-stretched. Adding our No Thread 30-inch Prestretch Film Carriage adds safety, consistency and the perfect prestretch.

This film carriage is designed with safety in mind – no film threading is required! An operator can’t ready the rollers when the safety door is closed. An analog sensor allows for even film tension application to the load by automatically adjusting the film speed on the sides and around the corners. The prestretch amount is easily adjusted from 60 percent to 300 percent.

A proper prestretch can save thousands of dollars in stretch film costs each year. How? The prestretch creates the right amount of film force, film tension and film strength required to secure a pallet for transport. With the right amount of prestretch, stretch wrappers can get the load secured with the least amount of revolutions and use the least amount of stretch film. And that means savings.

Keep in mind that just because a stretch wrapper is wrapping a load doesn’t necessarily mean it’s doing it in the most efficient or proper way. A new film carriage can renew your stretch wrapper. Try our stretch film efficiency test to see if your stretch wrapper is performing at an optimal level.

Secure the Stretch Film Tail

When readying a pallet for shipment a secure wrap is absolutely essentially. Too many times we’ve seen pallets leave the warehouse without a secure film tail at the end of the wrap cycle. A dragging piece of stretch film creates many safety hazards and looks unprofessional to the end receiver. Adding an in-line element that ensures a firm film tail solves this problem.

Film Tail Anvil Heat Sealer: Heat and pressure gives each and every load a secure film attachment with this mechanism. Replace the traditional film clamp and cut system with this one. It can be easily mounted to the side of the wrap zone conveyor. The sealer firmly welds the film tail together creating a clean and professional look.

Stand Alone Heat Sealing System or Automatic Film Cut and Wipe System: This add-on can be floor mounted along the side any existing conveyor section (adjustable from 1to 2inches) or can replace the current cut and wipe system. To be considered a true automatic pallet wrapper, a stretch wrapper needs to include a cut and wipe (or seal) system. A retrofit with this system guarantees a consistent film tail every time. A timed impulse heat system – cold to the touch in seconds – is the safest way to cut stretch film. The sealing system quickly welds the film tail to previous layers of stretch film creating a secure and clean film tail.

Streamlined Production Process

When you introduce an automatic stretch wrapper into the production line, whether it’s a turntable model or conveyorized automatic, it will make a difference to the pace of your work floor. An automatic machine frees up staff to do other tasks while the wrapper does its job. A forklift or pallet jack operator can place the pallet on the turntable or conveyor and then immediately begin preparing another pallet.

Take for example a pick and pack warehouse. Multiple pallet jack operators are in the warehouse building pallet orders. Once the pallet is complete, they can place the pallet on the conveyor or turntable, let the automatic stretch wrapper package the load, and begin preparing the next pallet.

Pallet jack operators prepare pallets and place them on this low profile conveyor system integrated with an automatic stretch wrapper.
