Tumbling Mats Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy tumbling mats, right? No!

Ways to Use Gymnastics Mats at Home

Many people wonder how a gymnast will use a mat at home. The truth is these mats are multi-purpose and can be used for much more than just basic tumbling practice. For instance, your gymnast will love their mat to practice basic tumbling like rolls, walkovers, handstands, and even cartwheels.

Mats will be used by advanced gymnasts to practice standing back tucks and front tucks too. A home gymnastics mat is also perfect for slumber parties, general horseplay, and mom can even use it for yoga practice.

What to Consider When Purchasing a Home Gymnastics Mat

If you are considering buying a gymnastics mat for use at home, you need to make several considerations before making a purchase. Below, we have listed the most important features of home mats to consider to help you get the mat you need and want.

A mat that is too thin won’t provide the cushioning and protection you want if your gymnast falls while tumbling on it. On the other hand, if the mat is too thick, your gymnast may not be able to practice stunts because their hands or feet will sink into the mat when they aren’t supposed to.  Standard mat thickness is about 3/8” thick.

Mat Dimensions

Before buying a mat, you need to think about where your gymnast will use it. You also want to make sure it is big enough for a gymnast to practice stunts on. Since mats are offered in a variety of different sizes, it shouldn’t be hard to find a happy medium that fulfills both needs.

Paneled Mats

One of the most popular gymnastics mats used in the gym and homes are paneled mats. Paneled mats are offered in many different colors and fold up for easy storage. This type of gymnast mat is offered in many different sizes. The most popular size is feet wide by feet long. This type of mat usually has Velcro attached on the ends, so more mats can be added to create a longer mat. Paneled mats are also often referred to as folded mats. Whether the mat you are considering is a folding mat or tumbling mat, it offers the same benefits and is usually offered in the same lengths and thicknesses.

To allow your gymnast to perform a series of elements together, EXTRA LENGTH mats might be a better option. Make sure you have a proper room for the size. Check out this one for a or 1feet long mat:

Z-Athletic Gymnastics & Exercise Folding Mat, you can pick the size.

Cartwheel Beam Mat

A cartwheel beam mat is a great home mat option for a beginner or young gymnast. The mat is created with proper hand and feet placement that guides gymnasts in the proper way to do a cartwheel. Even after the gymnast has perfected the cartwheel, the mat can be used to practice handstands and handstand rolls. Most cartwheel beam mats have a beam option as well. To use the beam option simply flip the mat over and you will find a practice beam. With this matted practice beam, a gymnast can practice beam balance skills and other skills that are normally performed on the beam.

The Tumbl Trak Cartwheel Beam Mat is really awesome. It has two sides, hands and feet on one side and beam line on the other side.  It also has a more variety of colors to choose from.

Incline Mats

Contrary to the name, gymnastics mats are just for gymnast. In fact, this type of mat can come in handy for many sports and activities. For instance, wrestlers, dancers cheerleaders can make use of a gymnastic mat in their home. The most popular type of mat for a wrestler, dancer, cheerleader, and gymnast to use in the same home would be a folded or paneled mat. Since paneled and folded gymnastics mats can be fastened together to make a larger surface, they are perfect for use for many different activities

Gymnastics Mats are Investments that Make Your Home Safer and are Easy to Care for

A good gymnastics mat is going to cost a small investment but the benefits will quickly outweigh the costs. Even with hard daily wear, a good quality mat can be expected to last a very long time. One of the best things about this type of mat is that it is easy to care for as well. To clean a mat, you simply need to use a wet cloth and water to allow to dry. If you want to sanitize the mat, you can use a soft cloth and your favorite sanitizer to keep the mat germ free.

Encourage Gymnastics Practice in Your Home with a Quality Mat

One of the best ways to encourage your gymnast to practice at home is to gift him or her with a quality mat. Take the time to get exactly what you need and you’ll never be disappointed with your purchase.

Gymnastics MatOnline

Routines on the mat are done virtuoso, and the gymnast may or may not include a prop like a ring, hoop or baton. However, men will not perform on the mat with a prop, or perform dance routines like the women do.Tumbling and flipping will develop shoulder muscles like the trapezius, deltoids, and pectorals. It will also strengthen your calfs, thighs and core muscles.

Vault is a stationary apparatus used for vaulting. The gymnast will run down a padded run way, bounce off of a spring board onto the vault with their hands then execute a practiced stunt. This will exercise similar muscles as the mat with a little more emphasis on shoulders and arms. Controversially the vault is considered one of the most dangerous pieces of equipment in the gymnasium.

Then there are the bars, there are two different types of bars that are both entirely different, the horizontal bars and the parallel bars. These and the maneuvers practiced on them are not similar.

The parallel bars are based more on precision and control, where the horizontal bars are more about exerting large amounts of energy but still maintaining control. Both these will greatly strengthen your biceps, triceps, and pectorals major muscles.

Because of the obvious health implications it provides for men, women have exclusive rights to the beam. The beam is used to demonstrate balance and grace.

Rings are the male equivalent to the beam, in the sense that women don not use them. A routine on the rings consists of a swing, strength, and holds, and are usually executed with a dismount.Pommel horse is also exclusively used by men. It is often demonstrated with some single leg and double leg work.

Presenting the AirTrack -Training Set for Home as well! AirTrack Factory have built up an extremely moderate arrangement of inflatable preparing mats for home utilize! The preparation set includes Mats, which gives you boundless preparing varieties.

Survey Your Existing Floor

It is important to be aware of the current flooring in the space.  You will need to investigate the top layer as well as the flooring construction itself. Is the floor concrete, a raised floor or wooden?  Determine whether the floor need to be screed or whether any preparation be required to the underlay in advance of laying a new floor.

Underlay is an insulating barrier installed between the structural flooring and the gym flooring you wish to install.

The type of underlay will completely depend upon the level and intensity of usage within the zone or area of the gym.  An underlay may be required in certain zones if the equipment or floor will be at risk of damage. Free weights areas are likely to require an increased level of impact absorption and will hence need a thicker underlay.  In any area where there is a risk of impact to either the floor or equipment, an impact absorption underlay may be required.

Flooring and Equipment Life Cycle

Fitness equipment will often be considered to have a three, five or seven year life cycle depending upon the usage, brand and specifications it has. We would recommend giving the life cycle cost of the flooring consideration at the fit out stage. This means you don’t have to replace the flooring in advance of the equipment in the gym, which could cause a great deal of inconvenience.

Gym Floor Tiles

For medium to thicker flooring (anything above 10mm), simple square tiles are the preferred product option.  It’s important that these are laid professionally as they will usually have to be fastened to the floor. The reason for this is that because they are not interlocking, the edges need to be accurately fastened to ensure there are no gaps or imperfections.

Flooring Rolls

Rubber flooring rolls are often a cheaper option than tiles and installation is much less labour intensive. Depending on the thickness of the flooring, the rolls are made in varying lengths.

Gym flooring rolls are sometimes preferred because they give a much smoother look to the floor because there are fewer joins. Fewer joins also means there is less chance of gaps forming or becoming loose through following of usage.

Gym Floor Colour and Custom Designs

As well offering a massive range of colour options, some of the industry’s most innovative manufacturers have begun offering fully bespoke options. These can include training aides like boxes, agility ladders and functional zones, but can grow to the size of indoor tracks like the one we installed at Xercise4Less. There have even been companies developing ranges of flooring which integrated lighting panels to create innovative new workout options.

Make sure to carefully consider the colours of your flooring per zone. Keep in mind the type of activity that will be carried out and how it fits in with the rest of the decor, as well as the cleaning this zone may require.  With manufacturers using differing techniques for dyeing rubber flooring it’s not uncommon for some poorer quality rubbers to become discoloured after relatively little use.

Fitness Flooring

Fitness flooring needs to be versatile and high performing. This can often incorporate a functional rig within the space.  The flooring required for this will ideally protect the floor below and provide some impact absorption for the equipment and the user. Often, this area will have markings designed and cut into the flooring such as ladders and movement circles.  You will always get some people trying to us this as a free weight area by bring over heavier weights. Please note that, if this does happen it will have a detrimental effect on the flooring.

Even in areas where there will be little heavy weights usage, we would still recommend tiles between 6mm and 10mm to protect the floor and equipment from accidental impacts.

One important feature of this type of flooring is that it needs to be moisture resistant. When flooring tiles aren’t adequately water resistant it can lead to an unpleasant and unhygienic environment. There also needs to be a good level of grip so dynamic movements can be performed safely.

Other Flooring Solutions

Some places opt to use a hard wearing thin carpet under fixed resistance machines or in other areas. The difficulty you face when using carpeted areas is that they are far harder to clean than solid flooring and can become unpleasant after a while.

Linoleum and real wood flooring are also used in some gyms and sports centres. The downside of using one of these classic types of flooring is that they provide very low impact and noise absorption and also don’t provide a particularly good grip.

Most of the treadmills and indoor cycles that we sell are bought along with a mat for underneath. Protective cardio equipment mats are ideal for home equipment that isn’t in a permanent position. These PVC mats are about 6mm thick and provide great grip and protection for the flooring underneath your equipment.

Non-Slip Mats

For me nothing matters quite so much as making sure you do not get injured when exercising. If you are going to use a mat, make sure it is not slip. Most people will use some form of training shoes when exercising. These of course have a very good grip, well most of them do. However many people will use these bare footed, such as younger gymnasts.

Nonetheless, you want to be sure that you also have a mat, that allows you to workout, without the risk of slippage. So although the trainers look after the surface of the mat, it is the risk of the whole mat sliding that you want to avoid.

Manufacturers of these mats will clearly state on their product, if they have this non-slip feature. It essentially means that the part of the mat, that touches the floor will not slide, move or slip. You can also buy non slip under covers for these types of mats.

Lightweight Mats

For me there is a very important balance to be had. For sure I want something light to carry around. However I also want it to be heavy enough to last, and also heavy enough so as it does not slip. It can be hard to find one like that. You can refer to our recommendations above, if in any doubt.

Foam Thickness

It very much depends what you are going to use the folding mat for, as to which thickness of foam you should opt for. Too thick and it makes the feet difficult to move. Too thin and it does not offer a huge amount of protection. The thickness of the foam can vary from cm to cm, with the most popular being cm.

Folding and Carrying Handles

No-one wants to be lugging around feet long mats. All of the good ones will fold up, either into or into Any decent exercise mat of this kind should also come with a strong carrying handle. Normally that reduces the size down to about feet by feet, and that makes it easy to carry and store away.

A natural rubber option

Made of natural rubber, the Harmony mat feels like it suctions to your fingers and toes, and is especially good for hot yoga. But being rubber, it has that telltale odor, especially when new.

The JadeYoga Harmony Mat is made from 100 percent rubber, and this offers some advantages, because it absorbs a lot of moisture and helps maintain traction in sweaty situations—possibly too much for some people, as it can be hard to pivot your feet or slide your hands when flowing from one pose to another. It’s slightly thinner than our top pick, at 3/1inch (4¾ millimeters) thick, but still provides a spongy-yet-supportive feel under hand, foot, and knee. It comes in five sizes, including two in the XW (extra-wide) line, but know that the bigger size you choose, the heavier it gets—and rubber isn’t light to start with. This mat has a strong rubber smell, at least for a while, which not everyone loves, and rubber also contains latex. If you have a latex allergy, try our rubber-free recommendation below.

Gaiam Athletic Duramat

Not everyone wants to get all spendy for their yoga habit. Still, it’s prudent to have your own mat (rather than use the germy ones at the studio or gym), which is where a PVC foam cheapie is appealing. In a world where these foam mats are a dime a dozen, Yoga Accessories has produced a low-cost option of value. Its PVC foam is a lofty ¼ inches (6.millimeters) thick and it’s generously cut at inches longer than standard length, and available in 2vivid colors. Still, it’s less dense than the Gaiam, so very sensitive knees may feel the floor beneath.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

To address the odor issues inherent in a product designed to absorb sweat, Lululemon included a silver-based antimicrobial additive, made by a company called X-Static, that provides such coatings for outdoor and sports manufacturers, as well as health care providers. X-Static claims the coating lasts the life of the product, though that’s not something we were able to test for, and products like yoga mats may make health claims that aren’t regulated by the FDA, so those claims don’t need to be proven scientifically.

Being more than half rubber in composition, there was a faint smell, though not nearly as strong as the JadeYoga mat or the odiferous Hugger Mugger. In fact, by the time I got to practice on the Lululemon mat, the scent had basically disappeared.

In the months since our test, we’ve seen complaints on the Lululemon site from some people—particularly those who practice many times per week, especially hot yoga—reporting issues with the mat’s layers peeling and separating. Our hot-yoga instructor, who has used the mat in classes once or twice weekly since the test, reports that it’s still going strong for her. It seems that the issue may stem from rolling up and storing the mat while it’s still damp or wet. A spokesperson from Lululemon emphasized that proper care, including cleaning and allowing the mat to fully dry between uses (which may mean unrolling it at home after class) is essential for its longevity. She also reiterated Lululemon’s Quality Promise: “If you are not satisfied with our product because if it isn’t working for you, we’ll take it back.”

Many indoor sporting activities require the use of gym mats to promote safety and prevent injuries. However, compared to other types of matting, gym mats have very specific placement, cleaning, care and storage requirements. Following these guidelines closely will help keep matting in goodp condition, providing years of quality service. • Upon receiving. If a gym mat is delivered during the cold winter months, do not unroll it until it has been stored at normal room temperature for at least 2hours. In some cases, unrolling a gym mat in cold conditions can result in damage to the foam and outer coating of the mat. • Cleaning the mat. Clean mats by first sweeping them to remove grit and dirt. Next, clean them with a neutral pH cleaner and then a disinfectant before each use—or, better yet, before and after. This keeps mats as clean and healthy as possible. (A cleaner/disinfectant may also be used) • Chemical disinfectants. Experts recommend using disinfectants specifically designed for gym mats. These will disinfectant effectively without leaving a chemical residue on the mat. Never apply previously used disinfectant. Always use a fresh solution. • Clean underneath mats. While it is not necessary to clean under mats after each use, moisture and mildew can build up in these areas over time. This can eventually damage the mat, as well as the floor below. Clean and damp mop the floor underneath mats at least every few weeks, if not more often.

Tips for getting a good trickline

Good tricklines should be able to give you a lot of bounce but also be able to absorb your landings smoothly without causing pain.

Double ratchet or pulley systems are preferred because they will allow you to quickly dial in the right amount of tension to the line to get a good bounce.  Choosing the right slackline webbing is important because it can effect how high of bounce you will get from the line.

The jib line in use

The Jib line set comes with a in wide webbing that is 4feet long and is set up with a single ratchet system.

This line is primarily made to give you the right bounce height for tricklining but is shorter than the Andy Lewis line.

How to set up a single and double ratchet trick line

In the video below you can what is involved as well as the differences in setting up a trickline with a single and double ratchet system.

For additional tips on how to set up a slackline, check out my slackline 10guide how to set up a slackline.

Don’t worry if you do not have any tree to set up a trickline it, you can still set one up, but it is a bit more complicated.

Check out my guide to setting up a slackline without any trees for some ideas on how you can do it.

How to get started trickling

Once you have mastered the basics skills of walking, standing, and setting up a slackline you can move on to learn some basic tricks.

Some of the beginner tricks are not all that spectacular on their own, but they help build the confidence to attempt some of the more advanced tricks.

Most beginner tricks can be viewed as the building blocks for the more advanced tricks because the advanced tricks use parts of or principals of the beginner’s tricks and build off of them.

Beginner trickline tricks

Acon Air 14ft Round

This slightly larger Acon Air 14ft round trampoline model is extra safe, extra bouncy, and great for families of all ages and sizes. The Acon Air 14ft includes a full enclosure with thicker pipe support for stronger safety nets and even more bounce area.

This trampoline, with its thicker support pipes and its extra thick outer rim padding, also does not need the safety mat, which normally takes up some of the bounce areas, meaning that much more fun space for the family! This model does not include a ladder, but that is because the trampoline is only 3inches off the ground, so nearly the whole family can easily climb on.

The extra support and the five-year warranty also means that this product can withstand stronger weather conditions and can stay outdoors all year round.

Also, the Acon Air does not have a single-person weight limit, so children and adults can both enjoy this trampoline any time of year!

Zupapa 12ft Round

The Zupapa 12ft round trampoline is a great starter size for families looking for trampolines and comes with a TUV certification that ensures that this model is safe for children of all ages. The trampoline comes with multiple (and some optional) parts, including a ladder, safety padding on the outer rim, a net enclosure to encompass the bounce area, and rain covers.

The safety padding on this particular brand is more padded than most trampolines for extra safety, living up to their safety certification. There are also extra springs on this Zupapa model for extra (but safe) bouncing for kids of all ages.

This particular trampoline also has a higher weight limit than some smaller trampolines, sitting at around 330 pounds. The steel and springs on this trampoline are also rust-resistant, which makes it a great model in terms of longevity for families.

The downside of this model is that it only comes in blue, meaning there is no real variety. The warranty of each part is also different from the other parts, which can prove confusing in some ways.

Overall, the size, safety, and ease of assembly of this 12-foot model make this trampoline perfect for families of all sizes.

Springs or No Springs

A relatively new concept in the world of trampolines is a Springfree trampoline. Anyone who has slipped through the springs of a trampoline should consider a Springfree.

I know as a child (and maybe guilty as an adult as well), I have gone up for a jump and came back plunging through the springs. Not so comfortable, especially for the men and boys.

Now available are Springfree trampolines which are radical new inventions to the trampoline world. Although a springless trampoline is in no way a complete solution to trampoline safety, it sure does eliminate one dangerous aspect of falling through the springs.

Springfree trampolines are more expensive, but then again the springs and mats do not need to be replaced as on a conventional trampoline, so this is a consideration to keep in mind.

In that case, you should consider an adult trampoline. Although not advised by us, nor the manufacturers, those that do decide to jump with multiple participants at once or partake in cool trampoline tricks, this is indeed a consideration.

One last consideration is to make sure the trampoline will be free from overhead hazards. All too often, trampolines are placed underneath trees/branches which can pose a safety issue in addition to a leaf collection area in the fall.

Although trampoline shape is more of a personal preference, this is another consideration to take into account. Available shapes range from round, oval, octagonal, rectangular and square.

Round trampolines are normally for home use and the most common shape.  These trampolines are bouncy near their center and normally steer jumpers to remain near the center when jumping. Round trampolines tend to be cheaper and lighter than other shapes.

Oval and octagonal trampolines are basically hybrids. They are bigger and offer more jumping area compared to round trampolines. They also tend to be more expensive than round trampolines. You will not find many options for these particular shapes but there are a few.

Historically, rectangular trampolines have been used for gymnastics/competition because they offer the evenest bounce over their entire surface. They tend to provide the best bounce heights and a large jumping area. Due to their size, they tend to be heavier and more expensive.

Some trampolines accessories are a necessity and others just add to the fun of owning a trampoline.

Trampoline ladders are a necessity and most of the top brands have their own version. Some trampolines come with a ladder and others do not so keep that in mind when considering the overall price. They help kids go onto and off of trampolines safely. We prefer the ladders with plastic steps because metal can get quite hot during the summer months. There are also rope ladders you can buy for your trampoline.

Anchor kits are a necessity in our opinion. Trampolines can be a big investment so you might as well spend the extra money to secure that investment in place. During storms and high wind situations, trampolines can easily be blown away if they are not properly secured to the ground. Also, anchor kids can be a theft deterrent.  You will have to buy your anchor kit separately.

Spring pulling tools are a must-have. It makes pulling the springs into place a lot easier during installation. Some trampolines will come with one and other will not but these are pretty cheap items. Please be careful because some of the cheaper spring tools have been known to break.

Trampoline covers are great investments. They will protect your jumping surface from the sun, dirt, rain, bird droppings and more.

Trampoline tents are a fun way for your kids to hang out on the trampoline. Some people even allow their kids to sleep in the tent at night. It is high off the ground so your kids do not have to worry about getting wet from the dew on the ground.

Trampoline basketball hoops are another way to keep your kids interested in their trampoline. Some trampolines like the Skywalker Jump and Dunk come with the basketball and hoop but there are also aftermarket ones you can purchase.

Bounce boards are another item that can be added fun for kids. They are especially great for kids who like to skateboard or ski board. They allow them to try tricks and the soft board.

Trampoline Brands

There are a lot of trampoline manufacturers. Each one strives to be the best and provide the most safety features. The truth is, there are only a few trampolines that can be put at the top of the category and be considered the safest.

If you are a parent who is considering a trampoline for your child, you will want to make sure that you are purchasing a trampoline that is safe for your children. You also want to know that you are getting one that will last many years. That is why we have come up with a list of what we feel are the top trampoline brands.

Springfree is a brand that has been around for many years, but first, it was an idea that Dr. Keith Alexander worked on for 1years to ensure he had it right. Their first trampoline was sold in 200to someone in New Zealand.

As the name implies, it is spring free and it has earned the title of being the safest trampoline in the world. They also offer a great warranty if you choose to register your product. The frame is covered for years or years based on whether you register or not.

For the mat, rods, and net, it is a difference of year or years. Either way, you choose to go with it, the outstanding customer support team will be there to help you with any questions or concerns you may have about your trampoline.

It has also earned an award for being Product of the Year award in 20in both the US and Canada. In Australia, it earned the Good Design Award in 201and the 201Kidspot Best of Award. Other awards include the RedDot Product Design award in 2014, Toyology Outdoor Toy Awards, and much more including several Parent’s Choice Awards.

In 2013, Springfree has paired up with Tgoma and now gives children, and parents, more reason to get outdoors and bouncing to better health.

We Love the Springfree 13ft Square

The S11Springfree trampoline is our top-rated pick for safety. Aside from already setting itself apart from the trampoline competition by being spring free, the additional safety features offered are next to none.

The square design offers a nice compromise between bounciness and softness. As outlined above, rectangular trampolines offer more of a spring, and round trampolines offer more of a softer bounce. The square shape offered by the S11Springfree is offering up the best of both worlds.

For the parents out there, this is by far the safest trampoline on the market. Boasting no springs, flexible response enclosure and a durable base construction make this a no-brainer for those who like the best of the best.

However, that does not come without a big price tag. This trampoline happens to be one of our top picks, but it also happens to be one of the more expensive trampolines. →

Zupapa trampolines that meet all safety requirements of the TUV, a German organization that works to protect people and animals. The warranty is limited and lasts for 6-months for the trampoline pad and nets, 1-year for jumping mat and springs, as well as a three-year warranty on the frame.

ACON began as a company in Finland that produced innovated products that would make people want to get up and get outdoors. They expanded into ACON USA Inc in 201This allowed them to further extend the product range into the United States.

They currently are the only trampolines on the market with a no single user weight restriction. This should indicate how well designed and built these trampolines really are. They are like tanks. Due to this strong design, they do tend to weight more than most trampolines.

All of the ACON products come with a standard 1-5-year warranty, but you will need to check with your specific product to find out exactly how much coverage you have.

Since 1995, JumpSport has been a family owned and operated business in San Jose, CA. They invented and perfected the idea of trampoline safety enclosures to keep children safe from falls.

To date, they have been awarded several times for their efforts. They have also had features done on their product on television news shows and more. They are very safe trampolines. If you take a few minutes to register your new trampoline, you can take advantage of the Fail-Safe Guarantee.

If you choose the Classic trampoline, you are covered for years, the Elite has years of coverage, and the Sports covers you for a full years.

Their website provides a lot of helpful tips on how to care for your trampoline to give it the most amount of life.

However, if you have an issue that is not covered by the tips, you can contact a customer service team for help. They are available Monday-Saturday. You can call, email, or write to them.

This is one of the more expensive rectangular trampolines but after reading other customer reviews the price may seem more reasonable.→

Little Tikes

Little Tikes is a name that many know and trust when it comes to their children’s safety. They make outdoor toys that are fun and enjoyable for parents and their children. Little Tikes focuses on mini trampolines that are usually for kids under the age of 10.

They have been in the business of entertaining little ones since 1970 when it was founded. The company is headquartered in Hudson, Oh, where it all began. You can easily contact customer support Monday through Friday from 8am-8pm.  The average warranty coverage for a product is 1-year from the date of purchase.

We Love is the Little Tikes 7ft

The Little Tikes 7ft trampoline has a great enclosure to ensure your little ones do not fall off. That is the main reason we prefer this trampoline over mini trampolines with a bar. All of the springs and frame are covered for extra safety. The frame is made of blow-molded plastic and steel.
