Wide-format Paper Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy wide-format paper, right? No!

The Zebra ZQ110

Examples include the Brother RJ-2050 and RJ-2150 label and receipt printers (with Bluetooth, USB and Wi-Fi connectivity, including AirPrint support) and the Zebra range including the ZQ110, which is said to be the “smallest mobile receipt printer”.

The Brother PT-P-300BT

Examples include the Brother PT-P-300BT (which we reviewed earlier this year) and QL-810W (unlike most models in its category, this one can print in two colours),  Epson LabelWorks LW-600P (which takes advantage of the voice recognition system on certain smartphones), and Zebra ZD500 (with optional 300dpi resolution).

ID card printers

Small businesses sometimes need to produce their own ID or membership cards – gyms are an obvious example, or you might want to restrict loyalty discounts or offers to the customers that earned them, not their friends or family.

Light and heavy media

Printers are designed to handle a certain range of paper thicknesses, and most manufacturers recommend against the use of very thin or very thick stock. For example, the Epson WorkForce ET-4550 in our office specifies 6to 95gsm (typical office paper is 80gsm).

But if you look around, you can find exceptions. One is the Oki C911dn which handles 5to 360gsm. It can also print on sheets as small as Aand on banner material up to 1.3m long. Gloss paper, film, transfer paper, waterproof paper and other types of material are supported.

Wide-format printing

We’re treating this as a catch-all category for wide-format printing for proofing, packaging and outdoor marketing, because we suspect that most of these printers go into businesses that provide print services for clients rather than for purely in-house use.

Here are some options that illustrate the diversity in this market.

The Epson SureColor P7070 is sold largely on its ability to deliver 9or 9percent of the Pantone range, depending on whether ‘light light black’ or ‘violet’ is selected as the tenth ink. The main applications are fine art printing and colour-accurate proofing.

The HP Scitex family comprises industrial-scale presses for printing signs, displays and packaging.

Cost Considerations

Check the running cost and total cost of ownership if you can. Unfortunately, this may be impossible for near-dedicated photo printers, since there’s currently no widely accepted standard for calculating cost per photo. For dedicated photo printers, however, the cost per photo is typically easy to calculate, because most manufacturers sell print packs with enough ink and paper for a given number of photos.

To get the cost per photo for a dedicated photo printer, simply divide the cost of the print pack by the number of photos it will print. To get the total cost of ownership, multiply the cost per photo by the number of photos you expect to print over the printer’s lifetime, and then add the printer’s initial cost. This total is the best basis for comparing prices.

Printer Size

Inexpensive dedicated photo printers range in size from small enough to fit in a pocket to too large to carry very often. If you want to bring a printer with you to events like parties or Little League games, pick a size you won’t mind carrying. Also consider whether you’ll need to run it from batteries. If so, make sure there’s a battery available, if only as an option, and find out how many photos you can print on a full charge.

Near-dedicated photo printers are far larger than most standard inkjets, because they’re typically designed for printing on cut-paper sheets as large as 1by 1inches, as well as banner-size variations in some cases. Some print from roll paper as well. Beyond the printer size itself, however, some printers need additional room behind them.

Your Need for Speed

Don’t worry too much about speed. For photos, quality matters more, and even the slowest printers today offer tolerable print speeds, at about minutes for a 4-by-on our tests. Keep in mind too that measured speeds are typically slower than claimed speeds, and (as we note in our reviews where applicable) the speed for any given printer may vary depending on the source you’re printing from.

Graphic design

Giclee printing is a way of creating high-quality prints: we explain how, and what you can use this technique for.

What is giclee printing? If you work in graphic design then there is little doubt that you have come across this term before in passing. But do you know what it means? This article will help outline the types and criteria that must be met for a print to be called giclee.

The first thing you need to know is that it’s pronounced ‘Zhee-Clay’. The word is taken from a version of the French word ‘la giclée’, meaning ‘that which is sprayed or squirted’.

Do your research

Professional series paper is more expensive than plain white copy paper, so be sure to do your research on any paper you are looking to purchase. There are many different types of professional paper out there, and each will react differently depending on what you are printing.

If you are buying a giclee print from an artist, confirm the type of paper it is printed on. Usually the artist will indicate it in the product description, but don’t be afraid to ask if they are selling it as a giclee and the paper they use is not listed.

Other standards

The three criteria listed here are the most widely accepted standards for giclee printing. However, depending on the medium being produced or reproduced you may see a few more standards in place.

The advantages to artists producing their work as a giclee print is that it can be created ‘on-demand’. Because the process is digital and does not require the larger numbers needed for an offset print order, or the time and cost that goes into traditional screen printing, it can be a good way for artists to produce their own prints rather than requiring a second party printer.

When purchasing a print that indicates it’s a giclee, make sure that the type of ink, paper, and sometimes printer used, is listed. A giclee print should have a life span of 100 years or more if properly cared for by the owner.

Assembly Required

Rather than ship the T5270 directly to us, Epson sent it to JVH Technical, a dealer based in Bellevue, WA. A JVH representative then delivered the printer and a host of optional accessories to our Bellingham, WA, office and helped us get it up and running.

Loading roll paper could not have been easier. We simply raised the scanner, opened the roll paper cover, unlocked and removed the roll media adapters, inserted and locked those adapters into the core of the paper roll (no spindle required), inserted and locked the roll into the printer, and then followed the instructions on the printer’s display panel. In our case, the printer automatically detected the paper type and quickly indicated that it was ready to print. If the paper type was not detected, it is a simple matter to set the paper type manually and to store custom paper settings.

Lots of Paper Choices

Before using the printer for the first time, the Epson dealer ran a test print to check the alignment of the print head. This proved to be perfect and the printer performed flawlessly throughout our evaluation. Similarly, after installing the scanner, Epson recommends running a calibration and provides a calibration sheet for this process. Like the printer, the scanner worked perfectly right out of the box.

Fast and Easy

All scanner and printer functions are accessible using the well-designed control panel. Image courtesy of Epson America.

All printer and scanner functions can be controlled via the well-designed control panel with a 2.7-in. color LCD. The menu provides easy-to-use controls for scanning and copying, reprinting jobs stored on the optional internal hard drive, loading and adjusting the paper setting, checking ink levels, performing maintenance (such as cleaning nozzles and aligning the print head), and adjusting setup options (such as network and power settings).

The printer was ready to go to work 1.2minutes after turning it on. When idle for 1minutes, it goes into sleep mode and after eight hours of inactivity, it shuts itself off (both user-configurable). Once in sleep mode, it takes just over a minute to wake up and go back to work. When printing, the T5270 consumes approximately 60 watts and produces 60dB of sound pressure. This drops to 1watts (and 37dB) in ready mode and watts or less when in sleep mode, making the printer very energy efficient.

Powerful Software

The printer drivers and utilities, available for both Windows and Mac OS X, proved to be powerful. You can print directly from most Windows or Mac applications as you would to any other printer. With an optional hard disk installed, you can view and control print jobs and reprint jobs stored on the printer. Windows users can print multiple documents to Epson’s Layout Manager, arrange them on a virtual page, and then print that sheet. The driver also enables you to set up and manage color profiles.

The optional scanner, which can scan in color at a rate of in. per second, was also incredibly easy to use. Although you can control the scanner from the printer’s control panel, we found it easier to open a Web browser on a computer or tablet and control copy, scan, preview and sharing features remotely. Using Copy Center, we were able to make a color copy of a D-size document in 60 seconds and save scanned documents in JPEG or PDF format. You can scan and e-mail a file even without a PC. You can also enable automatic e-mail notifications to alert you when jobs are finished, ink runs low or an error occurs. The printer also has an error status lamp that is easy to see, even across a large room.

Calculating Consumable Costs

The T5270 can print on sheet media as narrow as 8.2in., on roll media from in. to 3in. wide, and is capable of borderless printing. The maximum printable length is limited only by the application, operating system and driver used. During our evaluation, we printed full-color posters measuring 3in. wide and more than ft. in length.

An Educated Consumer

By understanding the print processes available through your provider, print buyers can strategically find ways to keep budgets in check and avoid future headaches.

One basic process that regularly comes up is when to make the switch from offset to digital. Here’s our bite-sized explanation of the difference between the two for the real newbies to print:

Offset printing is accomplished through the layering of different inks (cyan, magenta, yellow, and “key,” or black). Each ink is applied in a separate process by adhering to a metal plate in the imprint of the desired image and then “offset” to a rubber roll, ultimately to be pressed onto the paper. In the digital print process, toner is used and each color is applied to the paper at once without the need for multiple metal plates.

In many cases, both techniques can be applied within the same project to allow for the greatest efficiency, particularly when variable data printing is needed. By preprinting the shell of a piece, a buyer can take advantage of the less expensive click rate (basically the cost to print a sheet) of an offset printer for higher volumes. The variable data can later be filled in using a laser printer, or inkjetting the address panel.

And since there is no simple answer for when to use which process—offset, digital, or a combination of the two—here are a few questions to ask yourself to lead you to the answer for your particular projects.

Inkjet Printers

Inkjet printers are by and large intended for printing colour pictures on an array of print media. Inkjet printers arrived in a scope of alternatives from fundamental home workspace printers to the more specific expert photograph printers.

Ink Tank Printers

Ink Tank printers utilize outside ink tanks rather than customary ink cartridges. You can print a huge number of pages before expecting to supplant ink. No all the more supplanting cartridges routinely, which is cost saving and easier.
